Improving estimates for discrete polynomial averages

    Get PDF
For a polynomial PP mapping the integers into the integers, define an averaging operator ANf(x):=1Nk=1Nf(x+P(k))A_{N} f(x):=\frac{1}{N}\sum_{k=1}^N f(x+P(k)) acting on functions on the integers. We prove sufficient conditions for the p\ell^{p}-improving inequality \begin{equation*} \|A_N f\|_{\ell^q(\mathbb{Z})} \lesssim_{P,p,q} N^{-d(\frac{1}{p}-\frac{1}{q})} \|f\|_{\ell^p(\mathbb{Z})}, \qquad N \in\mathbb{N}, \end{equation*} where 1pq1\leq p \leq q \leq \infty. For a range of quadratic polynomials, the inequalities established are sharp, up to the boundary of the allowed pairs of (p,q)(p,q). For degree three and higher, the inequalities are close to being sharp. In the quadratic case, we appeal to discrete fractional integrals as studied by Stein and Wainger. In the higher degree case, we appeal to the Vinogradov Mean Value Theorem, recently established by Bourgain, Demeter, and Guth.Comment: 10 pages. This version combines arXiv:1910.12448 by J. mAb product consistency achieved in long duration microfiltration-based CHO perfusion process

    Get PDF
Perfusion processes have traditionally been used for the generation of unstable proteins in cell culture systems. The use of perfusion for production of stable proteins has been limited by low product concentration, media costs, and system complexity. However, with the advent of new single-use technology, cell culture media specifically formulated to support high density perfusion, and high-producing cell lines, perfusion processes are gaining widespread industry attention. Additionally, perfusion processes are considered an integral part of the “Factory of the Future” vision through enabling continuous processing while delivering a product effluent with consistent product quality and concentration. In this study, we evaluate the ability of a long duration perfusion process to deliver a consistent product stream. Although rarely reported, a reduction in protein sieving/transport through the microfiltration-based cell retention device is associated with many perfusion processes. To better understand this observation, we have investigated the impact of membrane pore size, membrane area, cross-flow rate, and mode of operation on protein sieving through a microfiltration-based cell retention device connected to a Mobius® 3L single-use bioreactor operated in a 30+ day perfusion process. It has also been reported that perfusion processes can be exploited to deliver a consistent product with more uniform product quality attributes. To support this observation, we will also present product quality data (i.e., glycosylation patterns, charge heterogeneity, product aggregation) for a long-duration mAb perfusion process and compare the results to a more traditional fed-batch process

The effect of green strategies and eco-innovation on Mexican automotive industry sustainable and financial performance: Sustainable supply chains as a mediating variable

    Get PDF
This work focuses on the study of how green strategies (GBS) and eco-innovation (EI) contribute to increasing sustainable and financial performance in the context of the Mexican manufacturing industry, and whether these relationships are mediated by the practices involved in sustainable supply chains (SSCs). This analysis is carried out through an empirical study of a sample of 460 companies in the automotive industry. The results reveal direct positive effects of GBS and EI on performance both, ustainable and financial. In spite of the key role played by SSC, this variable only exerts a mediating effect on the sustainable performance. Nevertheless, although the significant direct effect of sustainable supply chains on financial performance is not verified, there is an indirect effect of supply chains on financial performance through their influence on sustainable development. The findings reveal important implications for managers. They provide rational arguments (increase in performance) that should motivate companies in the Mexican automotive industry to incorporate values, standards, and actions focused on reducing the effects of their activities on the environment. These considerations will lead to a change in behavior which is better aligned with global environmental demands.Cátedra de Emprendimiento Santander-UPCT ; Doctoral studies at the Universidad Autónoma de Aguascaliente

The objective of this research was to determine the influence of property law on the statute of limitations in San Martin de Porres in the year 2020. Likewise, the general hypothesis states that property law influences the statute of limitations in the district of San Martin de Porres, 2020. The research methodology applied was non-experimental transectional correlational, in addition it was carried out under the quantitative approach by applying the survey technique to the respective number that reflects the population, as well as the sample, that is to say to 5 notaries working in the district of San Martin de Porres. The results evidenced that out of the 100% of respondents, 80% of them totally agreed that the space or territory must be protected by the holder, in the same way out of 5 respondents, 4 of them totally agreed that there are people who do not manage to exercise their right of creditor for lack of knowledge of it, promoting to a prescription of legal documents. The main conclusion scientifically exposed through a Spearman correlation, that the property right influences the acquisitive prescription. The result of this correlation r was 0.913, which, being positive and close to one, can be considered as a very high correlation. Finally, as a main recommendation, an essential monitoring of the properties owned, on the other hand, avoid the statute of limitations in any contract or document which determines a time for the execution of an important action on the situation that arises

Diagnosing 0.1–10 au Scale Morphology of the FU Ori Disk Using ALMA and VLTI/GRAVITY

We report new Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array Band 3 (86–100 GHz; ~80 mas angular resolution) and Band 4 (146–160 GHz; ~50 mas angular resolution) observations of the dust continuum emission toward the archetypal and ongoing accretion burst young stellar object FU Ori, which simultaneously covered its companion, FU Ori S. In addition, we present near-infrared (2–2.45 μm) observations of FU Ori taken with the General Relativity Analysis via VLT InTerferometrY (GRAVITY; ~1 mas angular resolution) instrument on the Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI). We find that the emission in both FU Ori and FU Ori S at (sub)millimeter and near-infrared bands is dominated by structures inward of ~10 au radii. We detected closure phases close to zero from FU Ori with VLTI/GRAVITY, which indicate the source is approximately centrally symmetric and therefore is likely viewed nearly face-on. Our simple model to fit the GRAVITY data shows that the inner 0.4 au radii of the FU Ori disk has a triangular spectral shape at 2–2.45 μm, which is consistent with the H2O and CO absorption features in a 10−4 M ⊙ yr−1, viscously heated accretion disk. At larger (~0.4–10 au) radii, our analysis shows that viscous heating may also explain the observed (sub)millimeter and centimeter spectral energy distribution when we assume a constant, ~10−4 M ⊙ yr−1 mass inflow rate in this region. This explains how the inner 0.4 au disk is replenished with mass at a modest rate, such that it neither depletes nor accumulates significant masses over its short dynamic timescale. Finally, we tentatively detect evidence of vertical dust settling in the inner 10 au of the FU Ori disk, but confirmation requires more complete spectral sampling in the centimeter bands

Delivery of Health Education in Adolescents with Behavioral Health Challenges

BACKGROUND Adolescents with behavioral health issues tend to have inadequate access to health education, and are thus less aware of the importance of personal and dental hygiene, exercise, and healthy diet and lifestyle habits. Due to this disparity, this population has been known to harbor a higher prevalence of STI’s, drug and alcohol abuse, physical altercations, juvenile detention, and suicide attempts. PURPOSE The overall objective of this study was to examine the effect of integrating a health science curriculum in this population. METHODS Participants aged 5-17 years old were recruited and assigned to either control or science groups by Family and Children’s Services (FCS). We created an 8-week health science curriculum to teach everyday life skills. A questionnaire was utilized to assess participants’ comprehension of health information. The effect of the curriculum on participants’ behaviors was examined using a pre/post “Behavioral Insight” questionnaire. Non-parametric Mann-Whitney U test was utilized to determine whether there was a significant difference in behavioral goals and science based knowledge between the control and science groups. RESULTS We examined two measurements to evaluate the efficacy of delivering health science information to 23 participants in two science groups, compared to 20 participants in two control groups who did not receive the curriculum. The health knowledge assessment results demonstrated a marginally significant improvement of understanding and retaining health science, which was delivered to the science group in 8 independent sessions on a weekly basis (p=0.0669). We observed a statistically significant difference in participants’ understanding of their behavioral deficits and how to improve primary behavior (p=0.01). There was no significant difference in either group regarding the extent to which participants understand the particular behavior to improve (p\u3e0.05). CONCLUSION Findings from our study demonstrate that integration of an 8-week science curriculum into life skill training did not negatively affect participants’ understanding of their own behaviors. Compared to the control group, we observed a marginally significant improvement in health knowledge assessment scores among students in the science group. Finally, the 8-week science curriculum, both active and passive learning components, was determined to be an effective delivery method for the content involved. Further study in a larger sample may be necessary to detect significant effects of the curriculum

© 2018 ESO. Reproduced with permission from Astronomy & Astrophysics.Context. Young stellar objects (YSOs) may undergo periods of active accretion (outbursts), during which the protostellar accretion rate is temporarily enhanced by a few orders of magnitude. Whether or not these accretion outburst YSOs possess similar dust and gas reservoirs to each other, and whether or not their dust and gas reservoirs are similar as quiescent YSOs, are issues yet to be clarified.Aims. The aim of this work is to characterize the millimeter thermal dust emission properties of a statistically significant sample of long and short duration accretion outburst YSOs (i.e., FUors and EXors) and the spectroscopically identified candidates of accretion outbursting YSOs (i.e., FUor-like objects). Methods. We have carried out extensive Submillimeter Array (SMA) observations mostly at ~225 GHz (1.33 mm) and ~272 GHz (1.10 mm), from 2008 to 2017. We covered accretion outburst YSOs located at 3σ significance. Detected sources except for the two cases of V883 Ori and NGC 2071 MM3 were observed with ~1″ angular resolution. Overall our observed targets show a systematically higher millimeter luminosity distribution than those of the M ∗ > 0.3 MClass II YSOs in the nearby (400 pc) low-mass star-forming molecular clouds (e.g., Taurus, Lupus, Upp Scorpio, and Chameleon I). In addition, at 1 mm our observed confirmed binaries or triple-system sources are systematically fainter than the rest of the sources even though their 1 mm fluxes are broadly distributed. We may have detected ∼30-60% millimeter flux variability from V2494 Cyg and V2495 Cyg, from the observations separated by approximately one year.Peer reviewe
