    Immediate post placental insertion of intrauterine contraceptive device at caesarean delivery: a prospective study

    Background: In India almost 65% of the women have an unmet need for family planning in the first postpartum year. Increasing rates of institutional deliveries creates an opportunity for providing quality post-partum family planning services. Post-partum Intrauterine contraceptive device (PPIUCD), a form of long acting reversible contraception (LARC) is one of the most affective and safest method available. The present study aims at evaluating the safety, efficacy, rate of acceptance and rate of discontinuation of Intra caesarean inserted contraceptive device Copper T-380A.Methods: This was a prospective study conducted at ESIC Medical College, Sanathnagar in women delivered by caesarean section during the period between March 2018 to February 2019. Recruitment was done based on the WHO medical eligibility criteria (MEC) for PPIUCD and also their willingness to participate in the study. Follow-up visits were scheduled at 6 weeks, 3 months and 6 months.Results: Of the 265 women fulfilling the WHO MEC, 180 (67.92%) were willing to participate in the study. Total acceptance rate was 67.7%. Majority of them belonged to the age group 21-30 years (80%) and para 2 (53.88). 93.3% of the women were literates. 12 (6.66%) cases lost to follow up and the complications were studied in the rest 168 women. During follow up -38.69% had missing strings, 12.5% menstrual disturbances, 4.76% abdominal pain and spontaneous expulsion in 4.1%. No cases of perforation and pregnancy were reported. Total continuation rate was 84%.Conclusions: PPIUCD is a safe and convenient option of contraception with low expulsion rates and high continuation rates

    Visual outcome of central serous retinopathy

    Background: Central serous chorioretinopathy (CSCR) is a sporadic disorder of the outer blood retinal barrier. Increasing evidence implicates an abnormal choroidal circulation as the cause of CSCR. The study aimed at the visual outcome of central serous retinopathy for a duration of 6 months from the primary attack.Methods: Study conducted at Department of Ophthalmology in Out Patient Department of Mediciti Medical College Hospital, from June 2013 to December 2014. Total 30 patients’ eyes were treated with placebo treatment with antioxidants for a period of 6 months.Results: Highest prevalence of central serous retinopathy was seen in age group of 20-40 years in 26 eyes (85%), males are predominant i.e. out of 30 patients 27 (90%), risk factors of central serous retinopathy like Type A personality are observed in 3. Associated visual abnormalities like micropsia, central scotomas in 20% of patients, fluorescein angiography showed 60% inkblot pattern. After observation for 6 months visual acuity was spontaneously improved within 4-6 months in 70% of patients, recurrences was seen in 6 patients i.e. 20% is observed.Conclusions: Central serous retinopathy is most commonly seen among 20-40 years age group, with male predominance, unilateral in which Spontaneous resolution of central serous retinopathy is seen in 4-6 months so for which aggressive treatment is not necessary.

    EFFECT OF VARIABLE CANT ANGLE ON SWEEPBACK WING

    Winglets are commonly used drag-reduction and fuel-saving technologies in today’s aviation. The primary purpose of the winglets is to reduce the lift-induced drag, therefore improving fuel efficiency and aircraft performance. Traditional winglets are designed as fixed devices attached at the tips of the wings. However, because they are fixed surfaces, they give their best lift-induced drag reduction at a single design point. In this work, we propose the use of variable cant angle winglets which could potentially allow aircraft to get the best all-around performance (in terms of lift-induced drag reduction), at different angle-of-attack values. This paper describes a XFLR 3-dimensional winglets analysis that was performed on a wing of NACA2412 cross sectional airfoil. The wing has span 2.40 m, root chord 0.180 m, tip chord 0.110 m, sweep angle 5 degree and taper ratio 0.556 and for a winglet NACA 0024 cross-sectional airfoil was considered of max thickness 24 percent at 30 percent chord, max camber 0 percent at 0 percent chord. The present study shows effects of wing without winglet, wing with winglet at cant angle 30, 60, 90. The results obtained from the analysis demonstrate that by carefully adjusting the cant angle, the aerodynamic performance can be improved

    A Hybrid Machine Learning Model to Recognize and Detect Plant Diseases in Early Stages

    This paper presents an improved Inception module to recognise and detect plant illnesses substituting the original convolutions with architecture based on modified-Xception (m-Xception). In addition, ResNet extracts features by prioritising logarithm calculations over softmax calculations to get more consistent classification outcomes. The model’s training utilised a two-stage transfer learning process to produce an effective model. The results of the experiments reveal that the suggested approach is capable of achieving the specified level of performance, with an average recognition fineness of 99.73 on the public dataset and 98.05 on the domestic dataset, respectively

    Validation of Molecular Markers Genetically Linked to S-Cytoplasm and Restoration-of-fertility (Rf) Loci in Hot Pepper (Capsicum annuum L.)

    Existence of CGMS system in hot pepper is due to the rearrangements in the mitochondrial genome and is largely used in economized and pure F 1 hybrid seed production around the world. The orf456, a new ORF present at flanking region of the coxII gene at the 3’ end, was distinguished male sterile cytoplasm in hot peppers along with atp6-2gene. In the current study, eighteen pepper genotypes (nine each of A and corresponding B lines) of varied origin were used to validate with two male sterile cytoplasm (S-cytoplasm) specific sequence characterised amplified region (SCAR) markers viz., atp6-2 (875 bp) and orf456 (456 bp) and one restoration-of-fertility (Rf) locus specific marker, CRF (550 bp). The results clearly showed that the presence of CMS-S-cytoplasm and absence of restoration-of-fertility (Rf) gene in the pepper genotypes studied and is comparable with the phenotypic data. In view of the outcomes it has been reasoned that the accessible S and Rf markers available in the public domain are reproducible and can be promptly utilized for marker assisted selection (MAS) in hot pepper crop improvement program

    A case study of mesospheric planetary waves observed over a three-radar network using empirical mode decomposition

    In this paper an attempt is made to study equatorial Kelvin waves using a network of three radars: Kototabang (0.204° S, 100.320° E) meteor radar, Pameungpeuk (7.646° S, 107.688° E) medium-frequency radar, and Pontianak (0.003° S, 109.367° E) medium-frequency radar. We have used the continuous data gathered from the three radars during April–May 2010. Empirical mode decomposition (EMD), Lomb–Scargle periodogram (LSP) analysis, and wavelet techniques are used to study the temporal and altitude structures of planetary waves. Here, we used a novel technique called EMD to extract the planetary waves from wind data. The planetary waves of  ∼  6.5 and  ∼  3.6 days periodicity are observed in all three radar stations with peak amplitudes of about 12 and 11 m s−1, respectively. The 3.6-day wave has an average vertical wavelength from the three radars of about 42 km. The 3.6- and 6.5-day planetary waves are particularly strong in the zonal wind component. We find that the two waves are present at the 84–94 km height region. The observed features of the 3.6- and 6.5-day waves at the three tropical-latitude stations show some correspondence with the results reported for the equatorial-latitude stations

    A Process for Co-Designing Educational Technology Systems for Refugee Children

    There is a growing interest in the potential for technology to facilitate emergency education of refugee children. However, designing in this space requires knowledge of the displaced population and the contextual dynamics surrounding it. Design should therefore be informed by both existing research across relevant disciplines, and from the practical experience of those who are on the ground facing the problem in real life. This paper describes a process for designing appropriate technology for these settings. The process draws on literature from emergency education, student engagement and motivation, educational technology, and participatory design. We emphasise a thorough understanding of the problem definition, the nature of the emergency, and of socio-cultural aspects that can inform the design process. We describe how this process was implemented leading to the design of a digital learning space for children living in a refugee camp in Greece.     Temperature dependence of resistivity and Hall-coefficient in a strongly disordered metal: NbN

    We report the temperature dependence of resistivity (rho) and Hall coefficient (R_H) in the normal state of homogeneously disordered epitaxial NbN thin films with kFl~3.27-10.12. The superconducting transition temperature (Tc) of these films varies from 8.13K to 16.8K. While our least disordered film displays usual metallic behavior, for all the films with kFl<8.13, both and are negative up to 300K. We observe that R_H(T) varies linearly with rho(T) for all the films. Measurements performed on a 2nm thick Be film shows similar behavior >.     Decidual glycodelin-A polarizes human monocytes into a decidual macrophage-like phenotype through Siglec-7

    Decidual macrophages constitute 20-30% of the total leukocytes in the uterus of pregnant women, regulating the maternal immune tolerance and placenta development. Abnormal number or activities of decidual macrophages (dMs) are associated with fetal loss and pregnancy complications, such as preeclampsia. Monocytes differentiate into dMs in a decidua-specific microenvironment. Despite their important roles in pregnancy, the exact factors that regulate the differentiation into dMs remain unclear. Glycodelin-A (PAEP, hereafter referred to as GdA) is a glycoprotein that is abundantly present in the decidua, and plays an important role in fetomaternal defense and placental development. It modulates the differentiation and activity of several immune cell types residing in the decidua. In this study, we demonstrated that GdA induces the differentiation of human monocytes into dM-like phenotypes in terms of transcriptome, cell surface marker expression, secretome, and regulation of trophoblast and endothelial cell functions. We found that Sialic acid-binding Ig-like lectin 7 (Siglec-7) mediates the binding and biological actions of GdA in a sialic acid-dependent manner. We, therefore, suggest that GdA, induces the polarization of monocytes into dMs to regulate fetomatemal tolerance and placental development.Peer reviewe
