    Application of special-purpose digital computers to rotorcraft real-time simulation

    The use of an array processor as a computational element in rotorcraft real-time simulation is studied. A multilooping scheme was considered in which the rotor would loop over its calculations a number of time while the remainder of the model cycled once on a host computer. To prove that such a method would realistically simulate rotorcraft, a FORTRAN program was constructed to emulate a typical host-array processor computing configuration. The multilooping of an expanded rotor model, which included appropriate kinematic equations, resulted in an accurate and stable simulation

    Economic Efficiency in Recent Tax Reform History: Policy Reversals or Consistent Improvements?

    The Economic Recovery Tax Act of 1981 reduced personal marginal tax rates and provided significant business tax breaks. Subsequent changes through 1985 cut back on business allowances. The Tax Reform Act of 1986 reduced marginal rates again, but added significantly to business taxes. Was there any unifying theme to these tax changes, or do they represent frequent changes in course for tax policy? This paper uses a general equilibrium model capable of second- best analysis to investigate the net effects on efficiency of each of these changes in capital income taxation. Under the new view that dividend taxes are unimportant investment disincentives, there is no set of other parameters in the model for which these changes generate improvements in efficiency. Under the old view that dividend taxes are important, however, these changes all increase efficiency for a wide range of values for other parameters in the model.

    A real-time, dual processor simulation of the rotor system research aircraft

    A real-time, man-in-the loop, simulation of the rotor system research aircraft (RSRA) was conducted. The unique feature of this simulation was that two digital computers were used in parallel to solve the equations of the RSRA mathematical model. The design, development, and implementation of the simulation are documented. Program validation was discussed, and examples of data recordings are given. This simulation provided an important research tool for the RSRA project in terms of safe and cost-effective design analysis. In addition, valuable knowledge concerning parallel processing and a powerful simulation hardware and software system was gained

In addition to its role in regulating β-catenin levels in the Wnt signaling pathway, the APC protein is implicated in regulating cytoskeletal organization.     Optimum farm plans for beginning tenant farmers on Clarion-Webster soils (An application of linear programming)

    Getting established in farming has become more difficult for young farmers in recent years, partly because of the increased amount of capital required to carry on a farm business. Too, the need for improvements in managerial ability has grown with the increased need for capital. The problems of farm planning thus become more acute for beginning farmers since they usually have access to relatively small amounts of capital and have limited farming experience. Many young farmers aware of the gains which may be obtained from improved farm planning, have turned to the Extension Service for assistance. Consequently, to provide the assistance requested, the Iowa Agricultural Extension Service has underway a program in farm and home planning for beginning farmers. This program is designed to provide the necessary technical information and guidance in farm organization. The success of an educational program for young farmers, however, depends on the basis on which recommendations are made. Information, based on empirical evidence, is needed to determine the way in which capital limitations affect income opportunities under different farming situations. Such information is helpful in deciding the most profitable way to invest limited funds. The amount of profits and, therefore, the length of time required to get established depend on the choice of enterprises and on how limited resources are allocated among enterprises. Hence, research was undertaken to determine and outline the alternative income opportunities, from different combinations of enterprises, open to young farmers In central Iowa. As a result, certain guideposts for use in decision-making could be established. These guideposts, which consider individual goals, managerial ability and resource supplies, should be useful as bases for directing recommendations to young farmers seeking to get established and, at the same time, maximize incomes

    Plans for beginning farmers in southwest Iowa with comparison of farm and nonfarm income opportunities

    How scarce resources, especially capital, should be allocated among different crop and livestock enterprises to maximize returns is an ever present problem for all Iowa farmers. It is a problem of particular importance to beginning farmers in southwest Iowa. They not only have limited funds with which to become established in farming but also have been faced with drouth and declining prices in recent years. Because of the magnitude of planning problems for young farmers, the Iowa Agricultural Extension Service initiated an educational program designed particularly to provide technical assistance and guidance in planning for this group. This research study had been designed to aid in these purposes and relates to problems of beginning farmers in southwest Iowa. Not only is guidance needed on the best organization of resources within the farm, but also an appraisal of income opportunities open to young farmers in farming and in nonfarm employment is needed to facilitate choice and adjustment. Information concerning optimum farm plans is needed to help farmers who wish to and should remain in agriculture to obtain greater profits. Information comparing farm and off-farm income is needed to facilitate choice by young farmers who may feel that income and welfare of their families might be increased by shifting to another occupation

    Elevated Levels of Arachidonic Acid-Derived Lipids Including Prostaglandins and Endocannabinoids Are Present Throughout ABHD12 Knockout Brains: Novel Insights Into the Neurodegenerative Phenotype

    Derived from arachidonic acid (AA), the endogenous cannabinoid (eCB) 2-arachidonoyl glycerol (2-AG) is a substrate for α/β hydrolase domain-12 (ABHD12). Loss-of-function mutations of ABHD12 are associated with the neurodegenerative disorder polyneuropathy, hearing loss, ataxia, retinitis pigmentosa, and cataract (PHARC). ABHD12 knockout (KO) mice show PHARC-like behaviors in older adulthood. Here, we test the hypothesis that ABHD12 deletion age-dependently regulates bioactive lipids in the CNS. Lipidomics analysis of the brainstem, cerebellum, cortex, hippocampus, hypothalamus, midbrain, striatum and thalamus from male young (3–4 months) and older (7 months) adult ABHD12 KO and age-matched wild-type (WT) mice was performed on over 80 lipids via HPLC/MS/MS, including eCBs, lipoamines, 2-acyl glycerols, free fatty acids, and prostaglandins (PGs). Aging and ABHD12 deletion drove widespread changes in the CNS lipidome; however, the effects of ABHD12 deletion were similar between old and young mice, meaning that many alterations in the lipidome precede PHARC-like symptoms. AA-derived lipids were particularly sensitive to ABHD12 deletion. 2-AG increased in the striatum, hippocampus, cerebellum, thalamus, midbrain, and brainstem, whereas the eCB N-arachidonoyl ethanolamine (AEA) increased in all 8 brain regions, along with at least 2-PGs. Aging also had a widespread effect on the lipidome and more age-related changes in bioactive lipids were found in ABHD12 KO mice than WT suggesting that ABHD12 deletion exacerbates the effects of age. The most robust effects of aging (independent of genotype) across the CNS were decreases in N-acyl GABAs and N-acyl glycines. In conclusion, levels of bioactive lipids are dynamic throughout adulthood and deleting ABHD12 disrupts the wider lipidome, modulating multiple AA-derived lipids with potential consequences for neuropathology
