The Lighthouse of Equality: A Guide to Inclusive Schooling
An exploration of the impact of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms from 1982 onward. In the Charter era courts have unprecedented influence on Canada\u27s public policy. This chapter examines how this has played out in terms of the equality guarantee in s. 15 and the case for inclusive education
Social and Economic Rights in Canada: What Are They and Who Can Best Protect Them?
This article examines the development and current status of positive social and economic rights in Canada. Exploring the comparative competence of legislatures, courts and human rights tribunals, Wayne MacKay suggests that courts should depart, with caution, from their traditional deferential role to legislators. Due to their flexibility and accessibility, HR Tribunals should supplement the role of the courts and legislatures in giving effect to social and economic rights, which should form part of a holistic package of human rights in Canada
Dynamic Pricing Algorithms, Consumer Harm, and Regulatory Response
Pricing algorithms are rapidly transforming markets, from ride-sharing, to air travel, to online retail. Regulators and scholars have watched this development with a wary eye. Their focus so far has been on the potential for pricing algorithms to facilitate explicit and tacit collusion. This Article argues that the policy challenges pricing algorithms pose are far broader than collusive conduct. It demonstrates that algorithmic pricing can lead to higher prices for consumers in competitive markets and even in the absence of collusion. This consumer harm can be initiated by a single firm employing a superior pricing algorithm. Higher prices arise from the automated nature of algorithms, impacting any market where firms price algorithmically. Pricing algorithms that are already in widespread use may allow sellers to extract a massive amount of wealth from consumers. Because this consumer harm arises even when firms do not collude, antitrust law cannot solve the problem. This Article looks to the history of pricing innovation in the early twentieth century to show how government can respond when new pricing technologies and strategies disrupt markets. It argues for pricing regulation as a feasible solution to the challenges non-collusive algorithmic pricing poses, and it proposes interventions targeted at when and how firms set prices

A high efficacy of the combined therapy is shown
Theoretical and computational modelling of compressible and nonisothermal viscoelastic fluids
This thesis is an investigation into the modelling of compressible viscoelastic fluids. It can be divided into two parts: (i) the development of continuum models for compressible and nonisothermal viscoelastic fluids using the generalised bracket method and (ii) the numerical modelling of compressible viscoelastic flows using a stabilised finite element method.
We introduce the generalised bracket method, a mathematical framework for deriving systems of transport equations for viscoelastic fluids based on an energy/entropy formulation. We then derive nonisothermal and compressible generalisations of the Oldroyd-B, Giesekus and FENE-P constitutive equations. The Mackay-Phillips (MP) class of dissipative models for Boger fluids is developed within the bracket framework, complimenting the class of phenomenological models that already exist in the literature. Advantages of the MP models are their generality and consistency with the laws of thermodynamics.
A Taylor-Galerkin finite element scheme is used as a basis for numerical simulations of compressible and nonisothermal viscoelastic flow. Numerical predictions for four 2D benchmark problems: lid-driven cavity flow, natural convection, eccentric Taylor-Couette flow and axisymmetric flow past a sphere are presented. In each case numerical comparisons with both empirical and numerical data from the literature are presented and discussed. Numerical drag predictions for the FENE-P-MP model are presented, displaying good agreement with both numerical and experimental data for the drag behaviour of Boger fluids
Radial Moisture Profiles of Cedar Sapwood During Drying: A Proton Magnetic Resonance Study
The drying of 6 x 6 x 10 mm western red cedar (Thuja plicata Donn.) sapwood samples has been studied with proton magnetic resonance (1H-NMR) imaging. Bulk moisture content and one-dimensional radial moisture profiles have been observed as functions of time under controlled air flow rate and temperature conditions. The effects of these drying conditions on the behavior of bulk moisture content with time corresponded well to the effects observed in full-scale lumber drying, although typical observed drying rates were of the order of 100 times faster. Sub-millimeter resolution of the radial water distribution has been attained with moisture contents from the green state to as low as a few percent, and contrasting drying behavior has been observed in the carlywood and latewood regions of the growth rings
Information communication technology and endogenous community-driven development: A remote Australian Aboriginal case study
This study investigated participant-led interactions and outcomes of a wide range of information communication technologies (ICTs) in endogenous Australian Aboriginal community driven development (EnCDD). A case-based method was used to narrate the evolving role of ICTs as participatory agency tools in a remote Ngalia community in Leonora WA. Three minor cases provided contrasting data. Data analysis of participant observations and emergent issues-related themes identified a multifaceted pattern informing a proposed framework for ICT-interaction for EnCDD
