The effect of impurities on the evolution of the melting front analyzed in a two-dimensional representation for the eutectic Pt–C
The paper discusses the effect of two-front melting on the liquidus temperature of the eutectic Pt–C and the eutectic temperature of the system in its pure state. This influence factor has not been considered thus far in the uncertainty budget associated with the assignment of thermodynamic temperatures to the eutectics Co–C (1597.15 K), Pt–C (2011.05 K), and Re–C (2747.35 K), selected in the European Metrology Research Programme project Implementing the New Kelvin. For Pt–C, simulation of the effect of two-front melting on the melting process has been done before in a 1D analytical model, and this formed the starting point to the present study. In this study the melting process is analyzed by means of a 2D axisymmetrical finite-volume model. In the model, freezing and melting are considered for an impure ingot and for a pure ingot. As to the impure ingot, the impurity concentrations are the concentrations met in current practice of the realization of the high-temperature reference fixed point, but formulated in terms of an effective concentration and associated effective distribution coefficient k<1, related to a Scheil fit to the melting curve at given melting conditions as measured for the eutectic Pt–C. Heat injection rates for melting varied from 15000 W·m-2 down to 3000 W·m-2. In any case for the impure system, two melting fronts are showing up. For the pure system, only one melting front is generated, traveling from the outside of the ingot toward its inside
In-line characterisation of continuous phase conductivity in slurry flows using artificial intelligence tomography
Electrical Impedance Tomography (EIT) can be applied to monitor a variety of mineral and chemical processes including: velocity measurements in drilling cuttings and hydrocyclone operations. Hydraulic conveying systems rely upon the knowledge of slurry density to ensure efficient transportation of the solids. Typically, density measurements exploit the attenuation of gamma ray photons which poses complex safety, operational and regulatory concerns with Electrical Impedance Tomography affording a non-nuclear alternative to traditional approaches. To optimise the accuracy of this non-nuclear density measurement, the electrical conductivity of the aqueous phase in a multi-component slurry, is required. Whilst conductivity probes are sufficiently accurate, there are often drawbacks and limitations due to installation restrictions, as it is difficult to separate aqueous and solid phases in real-time. Electrical Impedance Fingerprinting (EIF), is a novel measurement technique which characterises formulation properties, in-situ, based upon electrical impedance sensing and artificial intelligence algorithms. This paper outlines the development of EIF and its application to monitor aqueous phase conductivity in multi-component slurries, containing sands and clays. EIF accurately predicts this conductivity with high accuracy and a root-mean squared error of 0.055 mS cm−1. This development ensures accurate non-nuclear density measurements (<5%) are obtained across an extended aqueous electrical conductivity range of 1.5–70 mS cm−1. This encompasses the majority of target hydraulic conveying systems in mining operations. EIF also enhances the functionality of ‘traditional’ electrical tomography as not only are mineral processes able to be visualised, but the process materials are simultaneously characterised, to improve process understanding, optimisation and control
Synchronization of active mechanical oscillators by an inertial load
Motivated by the operation of myogenic (self-oscillatory) insect flight
muscle, we study a model consisting of a large number of identical oscillatory
contractile elements joined in a chain, whose end is attached to a damped
mass-spring oscillator. When the inertial load is small, the serial coupling
favors an antisynchronous state in which the extension of one oscillator is
compensated by the contraction of another, in order to preserve the total
length. However, a sufficiently massive load can sychronize the oscillators and
can even induce oscillation in situations where isolated elements would be
stable. The system has a complex phase diagram displaying quiescent,
synchronous and antisynchrononous phases, as well as an unsual asynchronous
phase in which the total length of the chain oscillates at a different

Beating patterns of filaments in viscoelastic fluids
Many swimming microorganisms, such as bacteria and sperm, use flexible
flagella to move through viscoelastic media in their natural environments. In
this paper we address the effects a viscoelastic fluid has on the motion and
beating patterns of elastic filaments. We treat both a passive filament which
is actuated at one end, and an active filament with bending forces arising from
internal motors distributed along its length. We describe how viscoelasticity
modifies the hydrodynamic forces exerted on the filaments, and how these
modified forces affect the beating patterns. We show how high viscosity of
purely viscous or viscoelastic solutions can lead to the experimentally
observed beating patterns of sperm flagella, in which motion is concentrated at
the distal end of the flagella
Variability in plasma concentrations of methylprednisolone 6 days after intrasynovial injection of methylprednisolone acetate in racing horses: A field study
Background: Methylprednisolone (MP) acetate is a commonly used corticosteroid for suppression of inflammation in synovial structures in horses. Its use is often regulated in equine sports by plasma MP concentrations. Objectives: To describe variability in MP plasma concentrations after MP acetate injection in different synovial structures and with co-administration with hyaluronic acid (HA). Study design: Field study in actively racing horses in three disciplines (Thoroughbred, Standardbred and Quarter Horse). Methods: Seventy-six horses (15 Thoroughbreds, 20 Standardbreds and 41 Quarter Horses) were included in the study. Injection of any synovial structure with a total body dose of 100 mg MP acetate was permitted, data were grouped according to the synovial structure injected and coadministration with HA. Plasma was collected before injection and at 6 days post-injection. Per cent censored data (below the limit of quantification) for each synovial structure were determined, and summary statistics generated by Robust Regression on Order. Differences between synovial structures and co-administration with HA were identified by ANOVA with Tukey’s post hoc testing. Results: Metacarpophalangeal (MCP) plasma concentrations contained 86% censored data and could not be included in the statistical analysis. The carpal joints (CJO) group had a lower plasma MP concentration (P \u3c 0.05) than the distal tarsal joints (DTJ) or medial femorotibial (MFT), the no HA (NHA) group had a lower plasma MP concentration (P \u3c 0.05) than HA. Main limitations: The synovial structures injected varied by racing discipline, so this study was unable to identify any differences between disciplines. Conclusions: Practitioners should be aware that injection of DTJ, CS and MFT joints, and combining MP acetate with HA may prolong its clearance, and withdrawal times for competition in regulated equine sports

A randomised controlled trial of treatments of childhood anxiety disorder in the context of maternal anxiety disorder: clinical and cost-effectiveness outcomes
Background: This study evaluated whether clinical and economic outcomes from CBT for child anxiety disorders in the context of maternal anxiety disorders are improved by adding treatment focused on (i) maternal anxiety disorders, or (ii) mother-child interactions. Methods: 211 children (7 – 12 years, 85% White British, 52% female) with a primary anxiety disorder, whose mothers also had a current anxiety disorder, were randomised to receive (i) child-focused CBT with non-specific control interventions (CCBT+Con), (ii) CCBT with CBT for the maternal anxiety disorder (CCBT+MCBT), or (iii) CCBT with an intervention targeting the mother-child interaction (CCBT+MCI). A cost-utility analysis from a societal perspective was conducted using mother/child combined Quality Adjusted Life Years (QALYs). [Trial registration: https://doi.org/10.1186/ISRCTN19762288]. Results: MCBT was associated with immediate reductions in maternal anxiety compared to the non-specific control; however, after children had also received CCBT, maternal outcomes in the CCBT+MCI and CCBT+Con arms improved and CCBT+MCBT was no longer superior. Neither CCBT+MCBT nor CCBT+MCI conferred a benefit over CCBT+Con in terms of child anxiety disorder diagnoses post-treatment [primary outcome] (adj RR: 1.22 (95% CI 0.88, 1.67), p = .23; adj RR: 1.21 (95% CI 0.88, 1.65), p = .24 respectively) or global improvement ratings (adj RR 1.25 (95% CI 0.99, 1.57), p = .06; adj RR 1.18 (95% CI 0.93, 1.50), p = .17) or six and 12 months later. No significant differences between the groups were found on the main economic outcome measures (child/mother combined QALY mean difference: CCBT+MCBT vs CCBT+Con: -0.04 (95% CI -0.12, 0.04), p = 0.29; CCBT+MCI vs CCBT+Con: 0.02 (95% CI -0.05, -0.09), p = 0.54). CCBT+MCI was associated with non-significantly higher costs than CCBT (mean difference: £154 (95% CI -£1239, £1547), p = 0.83) but, when taking into account sampling uncertainty, it may be cost-effective compared with CCBT alone. Conclusions: Good outcomes were achieved for children and their mothers across treatment arms. There was no evidence of significant clinical benefit from supplementing CCBT with either CBT for the maternal anxiety disorder or treatment focussed on mother-child interactions, but the addition of MCI (and not MCBT) may be cost-effective. A panel analysis of UK industrial company failure
We examine the failure determinants for large quoted UK industrials using a panel data set
comprising 539 firms observed over the period 1988-93. The empirical design employs data
from company accounts and is based on Chamberlain’s conditional binomial logit model,
which allows for unobservable, firm-specific, time-invariant factors associated with failure
risk. We find a noticeable degree of heterogeneity across the sample companies. Our panel
results show that, after controlling for unobservables, lower liquidity measured by the quick
assets ratio, slower turnover proxied by the ratio of debtors turnover, and profitability were
linked to the higher risk of insolvency in the analysis period. The findings appear to support
the proposition that the current cash-flow considerations, rather than the future prospects of
the firm, determined company failures over the 1990s recession
