Fine-scale analysis of biomineralized mollusc teeth using FIB and TEM
When it comes to mineral synthesis, there is a lot we can learn from nature. Although we can synthesize a range of materials in the laboratory, the experimental conditions are often constrained to particular ranges of temperature, pH, etc. Biological systems, on the other hand, seem to be able to produce individual minerals and complex composite mineral structures under a variety of conditions, many of which are far from those applied to create their synthetic counterparts. Understanding how nature does this could provide a means to produce novel biomimetic materials with potential applications in a diverse range of fields from medicine to materials engineering
Dodd-Frank Is a Pigouvian Regulation
Almost eight years after the passage of Dodd-Frank, financial institutions remain large, complex, and interconnected. Academics and policymakers across the ideological spectrum largely agree that Dodd-Frank has imposed substantial compliance costs on systematically important financial institutions (SIFis) without solving the problem that they are too big to fail. This Note argues that Dodd-Frank\u27s compliance costs have actually served an important regulatory purpose. By analyzing the spinoffs and divestitures that have occurred at eleven SIFis since Dodd-Frank went into effect in 2010, this Note documents the extent to which the Act\u27s compliance costs have led SIFis to shed business lines of their own accord
Checks, Not Balances
Critics of the administrative state who would revive the nondelegation doctrine and embrace the unitary theory of executive power often assume that each branch’s powers are capable of precise definition, functionally distinct from the others, and that the formal boundaries between each branch are sacrosanct. This Article situates these critiques in Founding Era and nineteenth century debates about the structure of the Constitution. In the 1780s, the AntiFederalists objected to the Constitution for failing to enumerate a precise taxonomy of each branch’s powers, for failing to specify that each branch’s powers were exclusive, and for failing to make government officials sufficiently accountable to the voting public. The drafters responded that the Anti-Federalist approach would neither support effective government nor prevent the branches from acting tyrannically. Rather than develop a scheme of discrete and precisely divided powers, as the Anti-Federalists proposed, the drafters preferred precise rules of inter-branch coordination to ensure that no one branch dominates the others. This debate continued throughout the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, with influential legal minds such as Daniel Webster and Joseph Story rejecting the Anti-Federalist theory of separation of powers.
We call this a theory of separation of powers based on a principle of anti-domination. On this view, the separation of powers is breached only if one branch deprives another of its procedural capacity to check the others. We further argue that this theory (a) provides a plausible account of the Framers’ understanding; (b) has had significant purchase in the development of interbranch relations since the Founding and thus can serve as a kind of rational reconstruction of historical practice; and (c) is consistent with the relevant constitutional text and the overall constitutional structure

The current air cargo system is analyzed along with advanced air cargo systems studies. A forecast of advanced air cargo system demand is presented with cost estimates. It is concluded that there is a need for a dedicated advance air cargo system, and with application of advanced technology, reductions of 45% in air freight rates may be achieved

Analysis of the Copenhagen Accord pledges and its global climatic impacts‚ a snapshot of dissonant ambitions
This analysis of the Copenhagen Accord evaluates emission reduction pledges by individual countries against the Accord's climate-related objectives. Probabilistic estimates of the climatic consequences for a set of resulting multi-gas scenarios over the 21st century are calculated with a reduced complexity climate model, yielding global temperature increase and atmospheric CO2 and CO2-equivalent concentrations. Provisions for banked surplus emission allowances and credits from land use, land-use change and forestry are assessed and are shown to have the potential to lead to significant deterioration of the ambition levels implied by the pledges in 2020. This analysis demonstrates that the Copenhagen Accord and the pledges made under it represent a set of dissonant ambitions. The ambition level of the current pledges for 2020 and the lack of commonly agreed goals for 2050 place in peril the Accord's own ambition: to limit global warming to below 2 °C, and even more so for 1.5 °C, which is referenced in the Accord in association with potentially strengthening the long-term temperature goal in 2015. Due to the limited level of ambition by 2020, the ability to limit emissions afterwards to pathways consistent with either the 2 or 1.5 °C goal is likely to become less feasibl
