Introduction to the Special Section. Character and Citizenship: Towards an Emerging \u2018Strong Program\u2019?

    Get PDF
The principal questions addressed in this special issue concern a crucial dimension of the educational agenda for 21st century Western societies: in the complex, uncertain, rapidly changing world we live in, which character traits matter most? How are they related with the development of a cohesive society with better rates of employability and innovation, especially among young generations? And how are they best developed? Within this context, special attention must be devoted to citizenship: what are the skills and virtues required for young people to play their role as fully integrated citizens in the emergent European economic, political, social and cultural space? And how can character education improve their social and political participation? Therefore, the scholarly challenge to be met consists of developing the theory of character education and its relation with citizenship education within a sound conceptual frame. This involves integrating approaches, models, data and research methods concerning character traits and citizenship education in Europe

Shear and longitudinal viscosity of non-ionic C12E8 aqueous solutions

We present measurements of the steady shear viscosity, the longitudinal elastic modulus and the ultrasonic absorption in the one-phase isotropic liquid region of the nonionic surfactant C12E8 aqueous solutions. The overall results support the presence of two separated intervals of concentration corresponding to different structural properties. In the surfactant-rich region the temperature dependence of the steady shear viscosity follows an equation characteristic of glass-like systems. The ultrasonic absorption spectra show unambiguous evidence of viscoelastic behaviour described by a Cole-Cole relaxation formula. In the water-rich region the behaviour of the measured quantities are more complex and reflect the presence of dispersed aggregates whose size increases with temperature and concentration. An additional low frequency contribution is also observed, which is ascribed to the exchange of water molecules and/or surfactant monomers between the aggregates and the bulk solvent region.Comment: 23 Pages, 7 Figures, 1 Table, submitted to J. EFFICIENCY OF THE ITALIAN AGRI-FOOD INDUSTRY: AN ANALYSIS OF "DISTRICTS EFFECT"

    Get PDF
In the course of the past decades major transformations in the Italian food industry induced considerable structural changes: on one hand, the creation of large industrial groups, with substantial input of foreign capital and, on the other, the concentration and geographic specialisation of numerous small and medium enterprises, with the formation of specific and typical agri-food local system (districts). To take account of the presence of food districts the analysis of the Italian food industry could not be conducted at national and regional level but it has to be studied at province and local level. It is also useful to analyse the food industry with reference to the different sub-sectors. We will conduct an in-depth analysis of the local systems (districts) of two sectors meat and fruit & vegetables processing. We will use balance-sheet data of the processing firms that were active in the meat (446 firms) and fruit & vegetables (227 firms) sub-sector in the years from 1996 to 1999. The analysis will consider the most significant balance sheet ratios, such as returns, productivity and labour cost in these local systmems. Then, we will consider the economic assessment of the firms belonging to local systems of the two sectors and compare with the non district firms. For the efficiency analysis will estimate a stochastic frontier production function in order to determine the "district effect". This analysis will also be directly correlated with investment in technological innovation. The economic and efficiency analysis confirms for many aspects the presence of a "district effect" in the Italian food industry.Food industry's efficiency, Food districts, Local development, Stochastic frontier production function, Meat and fruit sectors, Agribusiness, Industrial Organization,

TCC (graduação) - Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina. Centro de Ciências da Saúde. Odontologia.

Effectiveness of writing interventions for the treatment of trauma: a systematic review

    Get PDF
The effectiveness for writing interventions in the treatment of trauma has been a long-researched topic with research continuing to be conducted. This systematic review with narrative synthesis aimed to examine the effectiveness of writing interventions over the past two decades in reducing trauma or related symptoms in adults diagnosed with PTSD or having experienced a criterion-A event. Researchers searched the following databases: PsycINFO, Scopus, EBSCO, ProQuest (PTSDPubs), and PubMed. The last search yielded 100 manually full-text screened studies, with 18 articles included in the systematic review. The results point to some evidence for statistically significant decreases in trauma or related symptoms when compared to control groups/conditions. These results can be utilized to implement writing interventions for individuals who are on a waitlist for treatment or who do not want to engage in full trauma treatment, especially since instructions do not need to be provided by a psychologist. Future research should focus on qualitative analyses as well as investigating the effectiveness of writing interventions in reducing trauma symptoms in males and more culturally diverse groups

AS FAMÍLIAS TRABALHADORAS NO SETOR TÊXTIL E A CONCILIAÇÃO TRABALHOFAMÍLIA: UMA BREVE DISCUSSÃO SOBRE OS SERVIÇO PÚBLICOS

    Get PDF
