The matrix Kadomtsev--Petviashvili equation as a source of integrable nonlinear equations

A new integrable class of Davey--Stewartson type systems of nonlinear partial differential equations (NPDEs) in 2+1 dimensions is derived from the matrix Kadomtsev--Petviashvili equation by means of an asymptotically exact nonlinear reduction method based on Fourier expansion and spatio-temporal rescaling. The integrability by the inverse scattering method is explicitly demonstrated, by applying the reduction technique also to the Lax pair of the starting matrix equation and thereby obtaining the Lax pair for the new class of systems of equations. The characteristics of the reduction method suggest that the new systems are likely to be of applicative relevance. A reduction to a system of two interacting complex fields is briefly described.Comment: arxiv version is already officia

Quality control facilities for large optical reflectors at ENEA-Casaccia for physics application

    Get PDF
The paper describes the quality control facilities for large optical reflectors available at ENEA-Casaccia. Commercial and custom spectrophotometers allow to measure the reflectance; specular and diffused for flat samples, and specular for the full-size reflector. In the case of spherical shape, the 2f and the pin-hole optical tests give a quick evaluation of the focusing effectiveness and the curvature uniformity, respectively. An optical profilometer allows to accurately measure the reflector profile and its deviations from the project specifications

The analyses of postulated severe accident sequences play a key role for the international nuclear technical scientific community for the study of the effect of possible actions to prevent significant core degradation and mitigate source term release. To simulate the complexity of phenomena involved in a severe accident, computational tools, known as severe accident codes, have been developed in the last decades. In the framework of NUGENIA TA-2 ASCOM project, the analysis of an unmitigated 2-inch cold leg LOCA transient, occurring in a generic western three-loops PWR-900 MWe, has been carried out with the aim to give some insights on the modelling capabilities of these tools and to characterize the differences in the calculations results. The ASTEC V2.2b code (study carried out with ASTEC V2, IRSN all rights reserved, [2021]), and MELCOR 2.2 code have been used in this code-to-code benchmark exercise. In the postulated transient, the unavailability of all active injection coolant systems has been considered and only the injection of accumulators has been assumed as accident mitigation strategy

Analysis of normal levels of free glycosaminoglycans in urine and plasma in adults

Plasma and urine glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) are long, linear sulfated polysaccharides that have been proposed as potential noninvasive biomarkers for several diseases. However, owing to the analytical complexity associated with the measurement of GAG concentration and disaccharide composition (the so-called GAGome), a reference study of the normal healthy GAGome is currently missing. Here, we prospectively enrolled 308 healthy adults and analyzed their free GAGomes in urine and plasma using a standardized ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with triple-quadrupole tandem mass spectrometry method together with comprehensive demographic and blood chemistry biomarker data. Of 25 blood chemistry biomarkers, we mainly observed weak correlations between the free GAGome and creatinine in urine and hemoglobin or erythrocyte counts in plasma. We found a higher free GAGome concentration - but not a more diverse composition - in males. Partitioned by gender, we also established reference intervals for all detectable free GAGome features in urine and plasma. Finally, we carried out a transference analysis in healthy individuals from two distinct geographical sites, including data from the Lifelines Cohort Study, which validated the reference intervals in urine. Our study is the first large-scale determination of normal free GAGomes reference intervals in plasma and urine and represents a critical resource for future physiology and biomarker research

Detection of potential enteric pathogens in children with severe acute gastroenteritis using the filmarray: Results from a three - years hospital-based survey in Northern Italy

Acute gastroenteritis (AGE) are leading causes of morbidity and mortality in children. Therefore, rapid pathogens identification is needed. The AGE aetiology was investigated from 2018 to 2020 in 2,066 children in Parma (Italy) by FilmArray Gastrointestinal Panel and Enterovirus-targeting RT-PCR. Pathogens were detected in 1,162 (56.2%) stool samples from as many children; 798 (68.7%) were single and 364 (31.3%) mixed infections (68.7% vs 31.3%, P < 0.0001). Children aged 0–5 years showed the highest infection incidence (66.1%). The most frequent pathogens were Enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC; 19.14%), Clostridioides difficile (10.42%), Norovirus (10.36%), Enterovirus (9.44%), and Campylobacter (9.21%). EPEC, Campylobacter, enteroaggregative E. coli, Norovirus, and Rotavirus showed seasonality. The incidence of pathogens detected decreased between 2018 and 2020 (42.7% vs 20.8%, P < 0.0001), seemingly for the preventive measures imposed by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 pandemic. A putative aetiology in half the children examined and an estimate of enteric pathogens epidemiology were assessed

Abstract After the Fukushima accident, the interest of the public to nuclear safety has growth and the international technical nuclear community has increased his attention in the investigation and the characterization of Severe Accident (SA) scenarios. In order to simulate the different, complex and multi-physical phenomena involved in a SA, computational tools, known as SA codes, have been developed in the last decades. In order to give some insights on the modelling capabilities of these tools and the differences in the calculation results, also related to the user-effect, an analysis of an unmitigated Station Black Out (SBO) occurring in a generic Western three-loops PWR 900 MWe has been carried out by the authors in the framework of the NUGENIA TA-2 ASCOM project. The simulation results of ASTEC code (study carried out with ASTEC V2, IRSN all rights reserved, [2019]), developed by IRSN, and MELCOR 2.2 code, developed by SANDIA for USNRC, have been compared and analyzed. The SBO scenario considered takes into account the intervention of the accumulators as only accident mitigation strategy. Several figures of merits related to the thermal-hydraulic (e.g. primary pressure, cladding temperature, etc.) and to the core degradation (e.g. hydrogen production, etc.) have been considered to describe the accident evolution until the vessel failure, for the two codes comparison

Anxiety-like behavior of prenatally stressed rats is associated with a selective reduction of glutamate release in the ventral hippocampus

Abnormalities of synaptic transmission and plasticity in the hippocampus represent an integral part of the altered programming triggered by early life stress. Prenatally restraint stressed (PRS) rats develop long-lasting biochemical and behavioral changes, which are the expression of an anxious/depressive-like phenotype. We report here that PRS rats showed a selective impairment of depolarization- or kainate-stimulated glutamate and 3HD-aspartate release in the ventral hippo campus, a region encoding memories related to stress and emotions. GABA release was un affected in PRS rats. As a consequence of reduced glutamate release, PRS rats were also highly resistant to kainate-induced seizures. Abnormalities of glutamate release were associated with large reductions in the levels of synaptic vesicle-related proteins, such as VAMP (synaptobrevin), syntaxin-1, synaptophysin, synapsin Ia/b and IIa, munc-18, and Rab3A in the ventral hippocampus of PRS rats. Anxiety-like behavior in male PRS (and control) rats was inversely related to the extent of depolarization-evoked glutamate release in the ventral hippocampus. A causal relationship between anxiety-like behavior and reduction in glutamate release was demonstrated usingamixtureofthemGlu2/3 receptor antagonist, LY341495, and the GABAB receptor antagonist, CGP52432, which was shown to amplify depolarization-evoked 3HD-aspartate release in the ventral hippocampus. Bilateral micro infusion of CGP52432 plus LY341495 in the ventral hippocampus abolished anxiety-like behavior in PRS rats. These findings indicate that an impairment of glutamate release in the ventral hippocampus is a key component of the neuro plastic program induced by PRS, and that strategies aimed at enhancing glutamate release in the ventral hippocampus correct the "anxious phenotype" caused by early life stress

Aim of study: To assess the effects of propolis extract supplementation in diets for Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) fingerlings on growth performance, hematological and histological parameters. Area of study: The study was carried out in Paraná (Brazil). Material and methods: The experimental design was based on six treatments including the control diet and propolis supplementation (2%, 4%, 6%, 8% and 10% in the diet). Three hundred Nile tilapia fingerlings, with an initial weight of 0.61± 0.02 g, were distributed in 30 plastic mesh hapas (0.15 m3 each) arranged in a concrete tank of 25 m3 of water volume. The duration of the experimental period was 90 days. Main results: The increasing levels of propolis did not influence the growth performance and proximate composition of fishes. Red blood cells and hematological indices were not affected by propolis supplementation. However, total leukocytes and thrombocytes were higher in fish fed on propolis diets, being significant in fish fed 2% and 8%, and 6% and 8% supplemented diets groups, respectively. Research highlights: The supplementation of propolis alcoholic extract in the range of 2, 4, 6 and 8% in the diet for Nile tilapia fingerlings promote healthier fish with increased immunity in the evaluated culture conditions
