    Assessing overall network structure in regional innovation policies: a case study of cluster policy in the West Midlands in the UK

    Revisiting the theoretical roots of the key concepts of “embeddedness” and “networks” that underpin many recent regional innovation polices, this paper strives to achieve a more systematic understanding of the overall network structure of geographic agglomerations, which helps to form a more convincing model of regional development based on learning. This also helps to establish an analytical framework with indicators to assess the overall network structure in regional innovation policies. Employing the framework, the examination of cluster policy in the West Midlands highlights its weakness in addressing the overall cluster network structure and the contingent factors influencing the structure. The analysis suggests that there may be similar weaknesses in other regional innovation policies and the theories underpinning them as they share a common weakness in addressing the structural characteristics of overall networks

    An experiment to detect gut monopoles

    Recent advances in the development of Grand Unification Theories have led to several interesting predictions. One of these states that Grand Unification Monopoles (GUMs) exist as solutions in may nonabelian gauge theories. Another consequence of Unification is the possibility of baryon decay. The efficiency of the water tank detector in registering a Rubakov type decay will vary with both the interaction length and the GUM's velocity, expressed in terms of beta ( 0.01). The efficiency decreases at large values of because of the limited resolving time of the detector (approx. 50 ns). At lower values of Beta the time between interactions is such that the criterion of 4 events in 2 mu s can no longer be satisfied. The Rubakov experiment has now been in operation for almost 2 years with an estimated live time of 80%. During this time no candidate events have been observed leading to an estimated upper limit on the flux of 7.82 x 0.00001 m(-2) d(-1) Sr(-1). The ionization loss detection system has only recently come on line and as yet no results are available from this experiment

    A Numerical optimization technique for the design of airfoils in viscous flows

    The present work involves the implementation of an efficient optimization procedure for the design of airfoils in viscous flows The scope of the work is limited to low Reynolds number, incompressible, and unstalled fluid flow. Cubic Bezier curves with corresponding polygons are employed to define the airfoil, the vertices of which are used as design variables in the optimization process. Inviscid conditions about the airfoil are determined using a traditional Hess-Smith-Douglas panel method. Boundary layer calculations are subsequently made based on the inviscid results and the solution is updated, thereby accounting for viscous effects. A hybrid Generalized Reduced Gradient/Sequential Quadratic Programming method is used in conjunction with the aerodynamic model, to optimize the airfoils. Results were obtained for maximum lift and minimum drag problems with and without constraints. The results of the optimization were validated using CFD

    The Great Heathen Failure: Why the Great Heathen Army Failed to Conquer the Whole of Anglo-Saxon England

    In the year 865 CE, a coalition of Viking forces combined to form an army aimed at the conquest and settlement of England. Known as The Great Heathen Army, these Vikings managed to capture most of the territory that today constitutes England with the notable exception of the English kingdom of Wessex. And so, despite many successes, they failed to conquer all of English territory. Though these events, which transpired throughout the 860s and 870s, are well documented, the Viking perspective is rarely taken into account and there has yet to have been an argument that pinpoints how and why the Great Army was defeated. The purpose of this thesis will be to determine why the great army failed in their attempt to conquer all of the lands that belonged to the Anglo-Saxons
