Apparent sharpness of 3D video when one eye's view is more blurry.

When the images presented to each eye differ in sharpness, the fused percept remains relatively sharp. Here, we measure this effect by showing stereoscopic videos that have been blurred for one eye, or both eyes, and psychophysically determining when they appear equally sharp. For a range of blur magnitudes, the fused percept always appeared significantly sharper than the blurrier view. From these data, we investigate to what extent discarding high spatial frequencies from just one eye's view reduces the bandwidth necessary to transmit perceptually sharp 3D content. We conclude that relatively high-resolution video transmission has the most potential benefit from this method

Investigating racial bias within Australian rules football commentary

International research has shown that live sports commentary exhibits racial bias. Specifically, non-White players are more likely to be praised in terms of their physicality, while White players are more likely to be praised in terms of their intellect and character. The current study, which utilised a quantitative content analysis design, examined whether the speech of AFL commentators exhibited racial bias. The study randomly selected 50 men’s AFL game quarters from the 2019 AFL season and analysed 1368 applicable statements directed at 382 unique players. Based on prior research, a coding instrument was developed that incorporated three main categories (physical, cognitive, and character attributes), and six subcategories (physical ability, appearance, cognitive ability, intelligence, general character, and hard work). In contrast to the international literature, findings revealed that there were no significant between-race differences for each main attribute category. However, non-White players received a higher proportion of statements related to their physical ability, and a lower proportion of statements related to their appearance compared to White players. Non-White players also received a higher proportion of negative statements related to their cognitive ability compared to White players. There was no evidence found to suggest that players of any race were discussed in terms of their physical ability being innate, natural, or instinctual. Given the strong, but also dated, evidence showing racial bias within both American and European sports commentary, the current study provides only weak evidence for the existence of racial bias within contemporary AFL live commentary

Historical Movements and the Theology behind the Pluralism Project at Harvard University

The focus of this paper is to address religious pluralism as a belief along with examining multiple factors that have been a catalyst for the Pluralism Project at Harvard University to become part of American culture. The theology behind and ideology of the Pluralism Project will be examined along with the writings of Diana Eck, founder of the Pluralism Project. Outwardly, The Pluralism Project and the works of Eck give the impression of an impartial attempt to educate people on the growing religious diversity found within America. However, it will be shown that the Pluralism Project and the efforts of Eck are subversive to Christian orthodoxy

After the War with Hannelore : A Berliner War Child's Testimony from 1945 to 1989

"I met Hannelore and her husband, Jean Devigne, in 1994, years after both my parents passed away. At first, we established a client-artist relationship when they became interested in my paintings. Out of this grew a personal friendship which now has elements resembling a familial relationship. As I got to know Hannelore, I became interested in her childhood and adult years in Berlin after the war. The impetus behind making this film was her stories, my personal attachment to her, and my interest in WWII history and the changing face of Berlin since WWII and the Cold War." -- Publisher's website

Abstract Dans l’Griff-In Griffintown: Three personal French Canadian narratives on their homes, public spaces, and buildings in the former industrial neighbourhood of Griffintown. G. Scott MacLeod This Master’s thesis focuses on a two-generation French Canadian family, who through a series of interviews and a selection of their personal photographs from the 1940s to the 2000s, describe their Griffintown community experience. Griffintown is a former industrial inner-city neighbourhood reflecting Montreal’s industrial past, just south of the city’s downtown. With only a handful of the original civic, residential and industrial sites remaining, the once thriving community of predominantly working class Anglo-Protestants, Irish Catholics and French Canadians has all but disappeared. Currently Griffintown is claimed and viewed by some as a once predominantly Irish neighbourhood; little has been done to recognize that other cultures and communities occupied Griffintown. The current gentrification of the neighbourhood has brought a condo boom, bringing in a new generation of young professionals and retired couples but the former community endures in memory, via recent, books, films and community art projects. Using an arts-informed research methodology for my interviews and a photo elicitation process, I triggered the Merciers’ memories and stories about their former homes and community life, enabling them to recount their French Canadian experience in Griffintown. Using a short documentary film and educational website, this study articulates their personal narratives and memories from family homes and community living to reveal the importance of public spaces, buildings and communities. This thesis and documentary also highlight their views on the current condo projects changing the face of Griffintown. This arts-informed template and framework are designed for similar studies while the documentary and website are created for educational use in the field of Art Education
