    Canada\u27s Bilingual Dilemma: A Critical Discourse Analysis

    While employing a qualitative, critical discourse analysis approach this thesis examined the discourses of official bilingualism and French as a second language (FSL) education in Canada as they appeared in stakeholder promotion efforts. The aim of the research was to gain insight into the underlying sources of tension contributing to the disconnect between the vision for official bilingualism and FSL education and the reality of it within Canadian society. Through a critical discourse analysis approach, it was found that there are two conflicting sets of discourses which paint very different pictures of the actual state of official bilingualism and FSL education in Canada. Based on these findings, the researcher calls for a renewed effort on behalf of stakeholders to bring the real issues facing official bilingualism and FSL education out from the shadows and into national dialogue so that the objectives for official bilingualism can be realized within Canadian society

    The development of a multi-disciplinary educational programme in Biomedical Diagnostics - a novel approach.

    This paper describes the development of a taught Master’s course in Biomedical Diagnostics using a novel multi-disciplinary approach. This course, the first of its kind in Ireland, covers the science and technology underlying the development of medical diagnostic devices that detect early markers of diseases such as cancer. The ethical impact of these devices on society, the importance of scientific communication, relevant aspects of business entrepreneurial studies and the commercialisation of medical devices are also covered. The course consists of a mixture of theory, intensive laboratory practicals and independent research. The challenges faced in setting up and running the course are described, as well as some of the novel aspects and may provide valuable insight to those involved in the development of high level Masters courses

    Metronome-Cued Stepping in Place after Hemiparetic Stroke: Comparison of a One- and Two-Tone Beat

    Hemiparetic gait is characterised by temporal asymmetry and variability, and these variables are improved by auditory cueing. Stepping in place incorporates aspects of gait and may be a useful tool for locomotor training. The aim of this pilot study was to investigate the use of a single-tone and dual-tone metronome to cue stepping in place after hemiparetic stroke. Eight participants completed an uncued baseline stepping condition and two cued stepping conditions utilising a single-tone and a dualtone metronome. Step times were determined from force plate data, and asymmetry and variability were calculated for the three conditions. Step time asymmetry was significantly reduced in the single-tone condition compared to baseline, and paretic step time variability was significantly reduced in both cued conditions.The single-tone metronome appeared to be preferred to the dual-tone metronome based on participant feedback.The results of this pilot study suggest that metronome cueing produces similar benefits on stepping in place to previously reported findings in walking. Further research on whether stepping in place to a metronome can be used for locomotor training is needed

His assessment is generally negative, and those writers who have participated in Girard‘s project tend to share that view. A positive assessment of Nietzsche in light of Girard‘s work has been neglected. In this thesis I survey and analyze themes about desire and selfhood in both authors‘ work, showing the value of a Girardian view of Nietzsche and a Nietzschean view of Girard, and then move to a proposal for an alternate, positive view of Nietzsche in Girardian theory
