Footnotes in Gaza (2009) by Joe Sacco: a historian against the grain (anachronism and memory)
Notas al pie de Gaza is a graphic novel in wich Joe Sacco sheds
light on the killings of Khan Younis and Rafah, carried out by
Israeli soldiers in the Palestinian population in the 1950s. In
this article, we approach Sacco’s work from Didi-Huberman’s
concepts of time and images explained in Ante el tiempo (2008).
The analysis shows how Sacco introduces various anachronisms
to present past events. These anachronisms -understood as the
meddling of one time into another- reveals the difficulty of the
historian to relate his present with the past. Underneath this
analysis, we are faced with the question of a possible ethical
answer and the appropriateness of the described techniques.http://revistahumanidades.unab.cl//wp-content/uploads/2019/01/Mary-Mac-Millan-Notas-al-pie-de-Gaza-2009-de-Joe-Sacco-un-historiador-a-contrapelo-anacronia-y-memoria.pd
Identification of proteins interacting with the human mismatch repair protein MLH1
Loss of expression of the human DNA mismatch repair (MMR) gene, hMLH1, is seen in a number of tumour cell lines resistant to a variety of cytotoxic drugs. The aim of this study was to identify other proteins that interact with hMLH1 to attempt to further elucidate its role in MMR and the engagement of downstream damage response pathways.
A yeast two-hybrid system, an in vivo system for detecting protein-protein interactions was utilised for this purpose. Fifteen known and five unknown genes were identified as encoding proteins interacting with hMLH1. These included three known hMLH1 binding proteins, hMLH3, hPMS1 and MED1. Amongst the other genes identified was the proto-oncogene c-MYC, a gene previously implicated in genetic instability and apoptosis.
Using in vitro derived mutants of c-MYC, it has been shown that hMLH1 interacts with the leucine-zipper domain of c-MYC.
The effect of elevated c-MYC expression on functional MMR was examined. An inducible c-MYC expression system, Rat-1 fibroblasts expressing c-MYCERTM, a fusion of c-MYC to the hormone binding domain of the oestrogen receptor was utilised. Elevated expression of c-MYC did not effect the mismatch specific binding complex activity in these cells as measured in EMSA experiments.
However c-MYC overexpression utilising the Rat-1 cMYCERTM system was shown to result in a mutator phenotype in these cells.
The results suggest there may be a link between the mutator phenotype, induced through overexpression of c-MYC, and loss of MMR. Overexpression of c-MYC, which is associated with many cancers, may result in the sequestration of hMLH1 preventing functional MMR. The interaction between hMLH1 and c-MYC is proposed to act in a DNA damage response pathway which is disrupted upon aberrant c-MYC expression
Humanities Approach to an Analyze of Short Stories in the Romantic Period [8th grade]
The submitted unit is the second in a series covering the Ante-bellum period. This unit focuses on the accumulation of knowledge of the economic and political issues of the time with a narrowed focus/extension of the social aspect (Romanticism). Students will be exposed to art, poetry, and short stories and how they embody the Romantic ideas. This unit also focuses on plot development and analyzing literature with the use of plot diagrams and the SOAPSTONE model.
The end result of this unit is to have students write a short story that occurs in one of the three regions of Ante-bellum America and includes an economic, a social, and a political issue/event of the period. The short story must also contain all of the components of the genre

'The god of our small world': Art O'Brien and Irish nationalism in London, 1900-1925
This thesis uses the life of Art O’Brien (1872-1949) as a central axis on which to construct an analysis of Irish nationalism in London from 1900 to 1925. Born and reared in London, O’Brien became a leading member of the Gaelic League, Sinn Féin, the Irish Volunteers, the Irish Republican Brotherhood and the Irish Self-Determination League of Great Britain. His career as an electrical engineer placed him at the centre of the London business milieu and he was a key mobiliser of the Irish community. Appointed London envoy of Dáil Éireann in 1919, he was a close confidant of Michael Collins throughout the War of Independence. He was also a mediator in various peace initiatives during 1920 and 1921 and introduced de Valera to Lloyd George at their first meeting in July 1921. Following O’Brien’s rejection of the Anglo-Irish Treaty, he became embroiled in various financial disputes and suffered a spectacular fall from grace. He has been a neglected figure in the historiography of the Irish revolution and the Irish in Britain. Based on rigorous research of British and Irish archives, Irish language material and privately held papers, this thesis argues that O’Brien made a vital contribution to the prosecution of the Irish revolution by co-ordinating prisoner relief, financing gun-running and instigating a major propaganda campaign in favour of Irish independence. The dissertation demonstrates how a benign cultural nationalism gave way to militant activity for a small number of London enthusiasts who were galvanised by O’Brien. The importance of individual leadership rather than the influence of a movement is highlighted. This is the first comprehensive study of a London-based activist of the Irish revolution and also makes a significant contribution to the yet sparse historiography of leading second rank activists
The leadership experiences of the Assistant Directors of nursing in the Dublin Academic Teaching Hospitals (DATH)
The profession of nursing has undergone significant change in the last century but
more so in the last two decades since the Report of the Commission on Nursing
(1998). This Report is highlighted because of its significant contribution to the
advancement of the profession. It heralded radical change both in education
requirements and the structure of the profession. This study took place at a time
when the Department of Health was in the process of developing systems to
restructure the acute hospital system in Ireland into seven hospital groups with the
objective of eventually converting the groups into Hospital Trusts similar to the
English system.
The aim of the study was to explore the leadership experience of the Assistant
Directors of Nursing (ADON) in five of the six Dublin Academic Teaching
Hospitals referred to as DATHs. Both the historical context and the current role of
the nursing profession were explored including the role of the Assistant Director
of Nursing.
Twenty participants were interviewed using phenomenological methodology with
Giorgi’s Framework being used for analysis. The role of the ADON was found to
be multifaceted and is discussed in the context of the characteristics of
transformational and transactional leadership. Themes identified included aspects
of both these styles of leadership with a strong emphasis on Governance and
patient safety.
The essential meaning structure of the phenomenon that was highlighted in the
study relates to the balance the Assistant Directors must maintain between their
clinical role and their management role. At the time of the study, Ireland (and the
world), was in an economic crisis and this was reflected in the health service
budget. This was mirrored in the experiences of the ADONs. In their managerial
role, they were given directives for budget savings while in their clinical
professional role they were managing the clinical environment with staff
shortages and a moratorium on recruitment with resultant governance and patient
safety concerns. Patient safety concerns were paramount with this group and
remained so when cutbacks and workloads became more demanding
