Mucinous Cystic Neoplasm of Pancreas in a Pregnant Woman Presenting with Severe Anemia and Gastric Bleeding: Case Report and Review of the Literature

Mucinous cystic neoplasms of the pancreas are uncommon and especially their occurrence during pregnancy is an extremely rare event which necessitates an individualized and interdisciplinary management. A 33-year old woman was referred to our department during her third trimester of pregnancy (34th week of gestation) with severe anemia and tarry stools. Based on gastroscopic findings, our interdisciplinary team suspected a gastrointestinal stromal tumor and therefore indicated a prompt delivery via cesarean section completed with an oncological resection of the neoplasm. Histological examination subsequently showed a mucinous cystic neoplasm of the pancreas with no evidence of malignancy. To review the prevalence of mucinous cystic neoplasms and to discuss diagnosis and treatment during pregnancy. Moreover, we critically value the indication of preterm delivery and the oncological procedure in the perspective of outcome for mother and infant. A bleeding gastrointestinal tumor during pregnancy represents a life-threatening risk for mother and infant and requires an immediate interdisciplinary treatment. The urgency and radicality of the therapy should be adapted according to individual findings. As our patient's tumor was suspected of having a malignant progression, an extensive surgical intervention was necessary

Biomarkers for tau pathology

The aggregation of fibrils of hyperphosphorylated and C-terminally truncated microtubule-associated tau protein characterizes 80% of all dementia disorders, the most common neurodegenerative disorders. These so-called tauopathies are hitherto not curable and their diagnosis, especially at early disease stages, has traditionally proven difficult. A keystone in the diagnosis of tauopathies was the development of methods to assess levels of tau protein in vivo in cerebrospinal fluid, which has significantly improved our knowledge about these conditions. Tau proteins have also been measured in blood, but the importance of tau-related changes in blood is still unclear. The recent addition of positron emission tomography ligands to visualize, map and quantify tau pathology has further contributed with information about the temporal and spatial characteristics of tau accumulation in the living brain. Together, the measurement of tau with fluid biomarkers and positron emission tomography constitutes the basis for a highly active field of research. This review describes the current state of biomarkers for tau biomarkers derived from neuroimaging and from the analysis of bodily fluids and their roles in the detection, diagnosis and prognosis of tau-associated neurodegenerative disorders, as well as their associations with neuropathological findings, and aims to provide a perspective on how these biomarkers might be employed prospectively in research and clinical settings

Stamp2 Protects From Maladaptive Structural Remodeling and Systolic Dysfunction in Post-Ischemic Hearts by Attenuating Neutrophil Activation

The six-transmembrane protein of prostate 2 (Stamp2) acts as an anti-inflammatory protein in macrophages by protecting from overt inflammatory signaling and Stamp2 deficiency accelerates atherosclerosis in mice. Herein, we describe an unexpected role of Stamp2 in polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMN) and characterize Stamp2's protective effects in myocardial ischemic injury. In a murine model of ischemia and reperfusion (I/R), echocardiography and histological analyses revealed a pronounced impairment of cardiac function in hearts of Stamp2-deficient- (Stamp2(-/-)) mice as compared to wild-type (WT) animals. This difference was driven by aggravated cardiac fibrosis, as augmented fibroblast-to-myofibroblast transdifferentiation was observed which was mediated by activation of the redox-sensitive p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (p38 MAPK). Furthermore, we observed increased production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in Stamp2(-/-) hearts after I/R, which is the likely cause for p38 MAPK activation. Although myocardial macrophage numbers were not affected by Stamp2 deficiency after I/R, augmented myocardial infiltration by polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMN) was observed, which coincided with enhanced myeloperoxidase (MPO) plasma levels. Primary PMN isolated from Stamp2(-/-) animals exhibited a proinflammatory phenotype characterized by enhanced nuclear factor (NF)-kappa B activity and MPO secretion. To prove the critical role of PMN for the observed phenotype after I/R, antibody-mediated PMN depletion was performed in Stamp2(-/-) mice which reduced deterioration of LV function and adverse structural remodeling to WT levels. These data indicate a novel role of Stamp2 as an anti-inflammatory regulator of PMN and fibroblast-to-myofibroblast transdifferentiation in myocardial I/R injury

A regional PECS node built from place-based social-ecological sustainability research in Latin America and the Caribbean

Sustainability requires a combination of meaningful co-production of locally relevant solutions, synthesis of insights gained across regions, and increased cooperation between science, policy and practice. The Programme for Ecosystem Change and Society (PECS) has been coordinating Place-Based Social-Ecological Sustainability Research (PBSESR) across the globe and emphasizes the need for regional scientific nodes from diverse biocultural regions to inform sustainability science and action. In this paper, we assess the strengths of the PBSESR communities in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC). We provide an overview of PBSESR literature associated with this region and highlight the achievements of two prominent regional networks: The Social-Ecological Systems and Sustainability Research Network from Mexico (SocioEcoS) and the South American Institute for Resilience and Sustainability Studies from Uruguay (SARAS Institute). Finally, we identify the potential in these nodes to constitute a regional PECS node in Latin America and discuss the capacity needed to ensure such function. The results of the literature review show that while still loosely interconnected across the region, networks play key roles in connecting otherwise cloistered teams and we illustrate how the SocioEcoS network (focusing on transdisciplinary co-production of knowledge towards sustainability) and the SARAS Institute (focusing on innovative approaches for looking at complex social-ecological problems, rooted in slow science and arts) operate as key connectors in the region. We conclude that these organizations combined can embody a Latin American node for PECS, and would thereby not only contribute to regional but also global capacities to advance the sustainability agenda.Incluye referencias bibliográfica
