40Ar-39Ar analyses and MDD(multiple diffusion domain)model treatements were performed for 9 K-feldspar samples. They were collected from gneiss and mylonite of North Jiangsu-Jiaonan-Dabie tectonic melange belt and Tancheng-Lujiang fault zone. The thermal evolution history exhibits five fast ccoling stages found in these samples. In relation with their possible tectonic implications a recovery process after the collision of the North China plate with the Yangtze plate is suggested here.published_or_final_versio

Effect of hemodialysis on the hearing function of patients with chronic renal failure

Sensorineural hearing impairment (SHI) has been reported in chronic renal failure (CRF) patients with a prevalence of 20-40%. The aetiopathogenetic mechanisms reported included osmotic alteration resulting in loss of hair cells and in some, complications of haemodialysis have been hypothesized. We have in the past reported 2 cases of CRF patients who developed acute SHL following hemodialysis. This is a report of investigation of the effect of hemodialysis on the hearing function of CRF patients using pure tone audiometry findings. Thirty-three CRF patients were recruited for Pure Tone Audiometry (PTA) at admission and after three sessions of hemodialysis. The pure tone audiometry was done with a computer audiometer BA 20 Kamplex in the sound - proof (acoustic) booth in the ENT clinic. The duration of illness, dosage of diuretics and blood pressure were also noted. Similar age and sex-matched control were selected among volunteers who were otherwise clinically healthy. The data was processed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS Inc, Chicago, Illinois, USA). Thirty-three CRF patients treated with haemodialysis and 28 healthy controls completed the study, 34 males and 27 females, age range was 16 - 72 years, mean of 45.30 (SD16.20) for subjects and 49.7 for controls. Hearing loss was found in 22/34 (67%) at recruitment and 27/34 (79%) after 3 sessions of hemodialysis. There was a significant difference between the mean pre- and post-hemodialysis PTA values, P =0.0008. There was also a significant correlation between post - hemodialysis hearing threshold and (i) duration of illness (P = 0.00340) and (ii) creatinine levels of the patients (P=0.035). In conclusion, there was a significant depression in the hearing threshold of patients with CRF following three sessions of hemodialysis. This could be caused by changes induced by hemodialysis or effects of the duration and severity of disease. African Journal of Health Sciences Vol. 13 (3-4) 2006: pp. 29-3

Sequestration of Martian CO2 by mineral carbonation

Carbonation is the water-mediated replacement of silicate minerals, such as olivine, by carbonate, and is commonplace in the Earth’s crust. This reaction can remove significant quantities of CO2 from the atmosphere and store it over geological timescales. Here we present the first direct evidence for CO2 sequestration and storage on Mars by mineral carbonation. Electron beam imaging and analysis show that olivine and a plagioclase feldspar-rich mesostasis in the Lafayette meteorite have been replaced by carbonate. The susceptibility of olivine to replacement was enhanced by the presence of smectite veins along which CO2-rich fluids gained access to grain interiors. Lafayette was partially carbonated during the Amazonian, when liquid water was available intermittently and atmospheric CO2 concentrations were close to their present-day values. Earlier in Mars’ history, when the planet had a much thicker atmosphere and an active hydrosphere, carbonation is likely to have been an effective mechanism for sequestration of CO2

Heterologous expression of AtPAP2 in transgenic potato influences carbon metabolism and tuber development

    Get PDF
Changes in carbon flow and sink/source activities can affect floral, architectural, and reproductive traits of plants. In potato, overexpression (OE) of the purple acid phosphatase 2 of Arabidopsis (AtPAP2) resulted in earlier flowering, faster growth rate, increased tubers and tuber starch content, and higher photosynthesis rate. There was a significant change in sucrose, glucose and fructose levels in leaves, phloem and sink biomass of the OE lines, consistent with an increased expression of sucrose transporter 1 (StSUT1). Furthermore, the expression levels and enzyme activity of sucrose-phosphate synthase (SPS) were also significantly increased in the OE lines. These findings strongly suggest that higher carbon supply from the source and improved sink strength can improve potato tuber yield.postprin

Automatic correction of hand pointing in stereoscopic depth

    Get PDF
In order to examine whether stereoscopic depth information could drive fast automatic correction of hand pointing, an experiment was designed in a 3D visual environment in which participants were asked to point to a target at different stereoscopic depths as quickly and accurately as possible within a limited time window (≤300 ms). The experiment consisted of two tasks: "depthGO" in which participants were asked to point to the new target position if the target jumped, and "depthSTOP" in which participants were instructed to abort their ongoing movements after the target jumped. The depth jump was designed to occur in 20% of the trials in both tasks. Results showed that fast automatic correction of hand movements could be driven by stereoscopic depth to occur in as early as 190 ms.This work was supported by the Grants from the National Natural Science Foundation of China (60970062 and 61173116) and the Doctoral Fund of Ministry of Education of China (20110072110014)

Post-LASIK exacerbation of granular corneal dystrophy type 2 in members of a chinese family

PurposeThe post-LASIK exacerbation of corneal dystrophy, otherwise asymptomatic, is almost exclusively associated with the TGFBI gene mutations at codon 124 in exon 4 and codon 555 in exon 12. It is our intention to demonstrate that the pre-operative genetic screening for TGFBI mutations should be mandatory for refractive surgery candidates.Patients and MethodsIn this study, we reviewed the proband's post-LASIK slit-lamp and in vivo confocal microscopy images and genetic testing results, and performed genetic testing on eleven additional members of the family to investigate the penetrance of corneal dystrophy in asymptomatic members who carry the mutation.ResultsThe proband demonstrated a post-LASIK exacerbation of Granular Corneal Dystrophy type 2 (GCD2), identified as a TGFBI R124H mutation. Three of the 11 family members tested positive for the same R124H mutation as the proband.ConclusionThe lesson learned from this case is that the genetic screening of TGFBI mutations must be incorporated into the pre-operative screening procedures to prevent exacerbation and recurrence, which eventually could lead to the need for a corneal transplant.Eye advance online publication, 1 December 2017; doi:10.1038/eye.2017.265

    Minimal Model Holography for SO(2N)

A duality between the large N 't Hooft limit of the WD_N minimal model CFTs and a higher spin gravity theory on AdS3 is proposed. The gravity theory has massless spin fields of all even spins s=2,4,6,..., as well as two real scalar fields whose mass is determined by the 't Hooft parameter of the CFT. We show that, to leading order in the large N limit, the 1-loop partition function of the higher spin theory matches precisely with the CFT partition function.Comment: 21 pages, LaTe
