    Defending Behavior of Peer Victimization in School and Cyber Context During Childhood and Adolescence: A Meta-Analytic Review of Individual and Peer-Relational Characteristics

    Adolescent defending of peer victimization in the school and cyber context has received increased attention in developmental science and is an important component of antibullying interventions. However, the overall prevalence, and individual characteristics that correlate with defending in adolescence, have not been systematically and statistically reviewed. Framed in Bronfenbrenner’s social-ecological theory, this meta-analytic review included 172 reports out of 155 studies of defending including 150,978 children and adolescent participants from 4 continents (i.e., North America, Europe, Asia, and Australia) to analyze two aspects: (1) the average proportion of defenders in the population and (2) associations between defending and individual and peer-relational correlates of defending in school and cyber contexts. Using mixed-effects modeling, our results confirmed prior findings of gender differences (favoring girls) and age differences (favoring younger children) in defending. We found positive correlations between defending and affective empathy, cognitive empathy, experiences of peer victimization, self-efficacy, popularity, and acceptance, and a negative correlation between defending and moral disengagement. We also found substantial heterogeneity in these effect sizes. The reporter of defending consistently moderated all mean effect sizes. Implications for prevention efforts and future research are discussed

    Maternal diet associated with infants’ intestinal microbiota mediated by predominant long-chain fatty acid in breast milk

    IntroductionLong-chain fatty acids in breast milk are affected by the mother’s diet and play an important role in the growth, development, and immune construction of infants. This study aims to explore the correlation between maternal diet, breast milk fatty acids (FAs), and the infant intestinal flora.MethodsWe enrolled 56 paired mothers and their infants; both breast milk samples and infants’ fecal samples were collected to determine the long-chain FA content of breast milk by ultra-performance liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS), and metagenomic technology was applied to determine the microbial composition of infant feces. The maternal diet was also investigated using a 24-h dietary recall.ResultsThe results indicated that the fat contribution rates of edible oils in the maternal diet are significantly positively correlated with the contents of certain long-chain fatty acids (C16:0, C18:1, C16:1, and C22:4) in breast milk, which mainly regulate the abundance of Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus, Lacticaseibacillus fermentum, and Lacticaseibacillus paracasei in the infant gut. Through KEGG pathway analysis, our data revealed that the long-chain FAs in different groups of breast milk were significantly correlated with the pathways of biotin metabolism, glycerolipid metabolism, and starch and sucrose metabolism.DiscussionThe results of this study suggest a pathway in which the diets of lactating mothers may affect the composition of the infant intestinal microbiota by influencing breast milk FAs and then further regulating infant health

    Impact of maternal neuraxial labor analgesia exposure on offspring's neurodevelopment: A longitudinal prospective cohort study with propensity score matching

    BackgroundNeuraxial analgesia is widely used to relieve labor pain; its effects on long-term neurodevelopment of offspring remain unclear. This study was designed to investigate the influence of maternal neuraxial labor analgesia on offspring mental development.MethodsThis was a predefined secondary analysis of a 2-year prospective longitudinal study. Nulliparous women with single-term cephalic pregnancy preparing for vaginal delivery self-selected neuraxial analgesia or not during labor. Mothers and their offspring were followed up 2 years later. children's mental development was assessed with the bayley scales of infant development. A multivariable logistic model was used to identify factors associated with below-average mental development (Mental Development Index <90).ResultsA Total of 508 pairs of mothers and children completed a 2-year follow-up. after propensity score matching, 387 pairs were included in the analysis. In both cohorts, the proportions with below-average mental development were slightly lower in children whose mothers received neuraxial labor analgesia, although not statistically significant [in the full cohort: 9.8 % (36/368) vs. 15.7% (22/140), P = 0.060; In the matched cohort: 8.3% (21/254) vs. 14.3% (19/133), P = 0.065]. A higher 2-year depression score (in the full cohort: Odds Ratio 1.15, 95% CI 1.08–1.22, P < 0.001; In the matched cohort: Odds Ratio 1.09, 95% CI 1.01–1.18, P = 0.037), but not neuraxial analgesia exposure, was associated with an increased risk of below-average mental development.ConclusionsMaternal depression at 2 years was associated with the risk of below-average mental development, whereas maternal exposure to neuraxial labor analgesia was not.Clinical Trial RegistrationThe study was registered with www.chictr.org.cn (ChiCTR-OCH-14004888) and ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT02823418)

    Coccomyxa Gloeobotrydiformis Polysaccharide Inhibits Lipopolysaccharide-Induced Inflammation in RAW 264.7 Macrophages

    Background/Aims: Inflammation plays a vital role in the etiology and pathogenesis of chronic noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), which are the leading health issues throughout the world. Our previous studies verified the satisfactory therapeutic effects of Coccomyxa gloeobotrydiformis (CGD) polysaccharide on several NCDs. In this study, we aimed to investigate the anti-inflammatory effects of CGD polysaccharide, and the corresponding molecular mechanisms, on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced inflammation in RAW264.7 cells. Methods: A viability assay and a lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) assay were used to measure the cytotoxic effects of CGD polysaccharide on LPS-stimulated RAW264.7 cells. To investigate the potential anti-inflammatory mechanisms of CGD polysaccharide in LPS-stimulated RAW264.7 cells, nitric oxide (NO) production was determined using a NO assay and the expression of inflammatory mediators (PGE2, iNOS and COX-2), inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-6, IL-1β and IL-10) and inflammation-related signaling pathways (the MAPK/NF-κB, PI3K/AKT/JNK, JAK/STAT and Nrf2/HO-1pathways) were observed by western blotting. The translocation of NF-κB p65 was also observed using an immunofluorescent assay. Results: CGD polysaccharide significantly inhibited LPS-induced NO production and PGE2 expression by reducing the expression of iNOS and COX-2. It also suppressed the expression of the pro-inflammatory cytokines TNF-α, IL-6 and IL-1β, and up-regulated the expression of the anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10. Further experiments demonstrated that CGD polysaccharide could inhibit inflammatory signaling pathways (the MAPK/NF-κB, PI3K/AKT/JNK and JAK/STAT pathways). At the same time, it enhanced the anti-inflammatory pathway Nrf2/HO-1. In addition, CGD polysaccharide did not display any cytotoxic effects, even at a high concentration. Conclusion: Taken together, the results suggest that CGD polysaccharide significantly inhibits LPS-induced inflammation in RAW264.7 cells. This effect lies in its regulatory effects on the signaling pathways MAPK/ NF-κB, PI3K/AKT/JNK, JAK/STAT and Nrf2/HO-1.Our findings reveal that CGD polysaccharide has the potential to be used as a relatively safe and effective drug as part of the treatment of NCDs

    Optimal cutoff of the triglyceride to highdensity lipoprotein cholesterol ratio to detect cardiovascular risk factors among Han adults in Xinjiang

    Background: To determine whether TG/HDL-C ratio, which has been shown to be an indicator of the metabolic syndrome (MetS) and insulin resistance (IR), can predict cardiovascular risk factors in the Chinese Han population in Xinjiang. Methods: The cardiovascular risk survey (CRS) was conducted from October 2007 to March 2010. A total of 14,618 representative participants were selected using a four-stage stratified sampling method. A total of 5757 Han participants were included in the study. The present statistical analysis was restricted to the 5595 Han subjects who had complete anthropometric data. The sensitivity, specificity, and distance on the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve in each TG/HDL level were calculated. The shortest distance in the ROC curves was used to determine the optimal cutoff of the TG/HDL-C ratio for detecting cardiovascular risk factors. Results: The prevalence of hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, and hypertriglyceridemia was higher with higher TG/HDL-C ratio for both men and women. The TG/HDL-C ratio was positively associated with systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, and serum concentrations of total cholesterol. The optimal TG/HDL-C ratio cutoffs for predicting hypertension, dyslipidemia, diabetes, and 652 of these risk factors for Han adults in Xinjiang were 1.3, 1.3, 1.4, and 1.4 in men and 0.9, 1.0, 1.0, and 1.1 in women, respectively. Conclusions: The evaluation of TG/HDL-C ratio should be considered for one of cardiovascular risk factor predictors among Han adults in Xinjiang

    Effects of 3-Phenyl-Propenal on the Expression of Toll-Like Receptors and Downstream Signaling Components on Raw264.7 Murine Macrophages

    Abstract: 3-phenyl-propenal is one of the principle compounds isolated from Guizhi (Ramulus Cinnamomi), the principal drug in Guizhi-Tang (GZT), a famous traditional Chinese medical formula. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of 3-phenyl-propenal on the expression of toll-like receptor 3 (TLR3), TLR4 and the downstream signaling components on Raw264.7 murine microphages. Raw264.7 cells were cultured in RPMI-1640 medium containing LPS (lipopolysaccharide) or poly (I:C) in the presence or absence of 3-phenyl-propenal. After 24-hour incubation, the medium was collected and the amount of TNF-α and IFN-β was measured by ELISA. mRNA expression of TLR3, TLR4, myeloid differentiation factor (MyD88), TRAF-6 (tumor necrosis factor receptor-associated), TRAM (toll-like receptor-associated molecule) and TRIF (TIR domain-containing adaptor inducing IFN-β) were analyzed by real-time PCR with SYBR green dye. Protein expression of TLR3 and TLR4 was analyzed by Western blotting and that of MyD88 and TRAF-6 was analyzed by immunofluorescence assay. The results indicate that LPS increased the expression of TLR4, MyD88, TRAF-6, TRAM and TRIF, but had no influence on TLR3, while poly (I:C) up-regulated the expression of TLR3, MyD88, TRAM and TRIF. 3-phenyl-propenal significantly decreased the expression of LPS-induced TLR4, MyD88, TRAF-6, while possessing no effect on LPS-induced TRAM and TRIF expression in Raw264.7 cells. When cells were stimulated by poly (I:C), 3-phenyl-propenal significantly decreased TLR3 and MyD88 expression. In conclusion, 3-phenyl-propenal blocked the over-expression of TLR3, TLR4, their downstream signaling components MyD88 and TRAF-6, which indicate that it had an antagonistic effect on TLR3 and TLR4

    A Microring Resonator Based Negative Permeability Metamaterial Sensor

    Metamaterials are artificial multifunctional materials that acquire their material properties from their structure, rather than inheriting them directly from the materials they are composed of, and they may provide novel tools to significantly enhance the sensitivity and resolution of sensors. In this paper, we derive the dispersion relation of a cylindrical dielectric waveguide loaded on a negative permeability metamaterial (NPM) layer, and compute the resonant frequencies and electric field distribution of the corresponding Whispering-Gallery-Modes (WGMs). The theoretical resonant frequency and electric field distribution results are in good agreement with the full wave simulation results. We show that the NPM sensor based on a microring resonator possesses higher sensitivity than the traditional microring sensor since with the evanescent wave amplification and the increase of NPM layer thickness, the sensitivity will be greatly increased. This may open a door for designing sensors with specified sensitivity

    Study on diversity, nitrogen-fixing capacity, and heavy metal tolerance of culturable Pongamia pinnata rhizobia in the vanadium-titanium magnetite tailings

    IntroductionThe diversity, nitrogen-fixing capacity and heavy metal tolerance of culturable rhizobia in symbiotic relationship with Pongamia pinnata surviving in vanadium (V) - titanium (Ti) magnetite (VTM) tailings is still unknown, and the rhizobia isolates from the extreme barren VTM tailings contaminated with a variety of metals would provide available rhizobia resources for bioremediation.MethodsP. pinnata plants were cultivated in pots containing the VTM tailings until root nodules formed, and then culturable rhizobia were isolated from root nodules. The diversity, nitrogen-fixing capacity and heavy metal tolerance of rhizobia were performed.ResultsAmong 57 rhizobia isolated from these nodules, only twenty strains showed different levels of tolerance to copper (Cu), nickel (Ni), manganese (Mn) and zinc (Zn), especially strains PP1 and PP76 showing high tolerance against these four heavy metals. Based on the phylogenetic analysis of 16S rRNA and four house-keeping genes (atpD, recA, rpoB, glnII), twelve isolates were identified as Bradyrhizobium pachyrhizi, four as Ochrobactrum anthropic, three as Rhizobium selenitireducens and one as Rhizobium pisi. Some rhizobia isolates showed a high nitrogen-fixing capacity and promoted P. pinnata growth by increasing nitrogen content by 10%-145% in aboveground plant part and 13%-79% in the root. R. pachyrhizi PP1 showed the strongest capacity of nitrogen fixation, plant growth promotion and resistance to heavy metals, which provided effective rhizobia strains for bioremediation of VTM tailings or other contaminated soils. This study demonstrated that there are at least three genera of culturable rhizobia in symbiosis with P. pinnata in VTM tailings.DiscussionAbundant culturable rhizobia with the capacity of nitrogen fixation, plant growth promotion and resistance to heavy metals survived in VTM tailings, indicating more valuable functional microbes could be isolated from extreme soil environments such as VTM tailings
