    Does urbanization have spatial spillover effect on poverty reduction: empirical evidence from rural China

    In light of a scarcity of research on the spatial effects of urbanization on poverty reduction, this study uses panel data on 30 provinces in China from 2009 to 2019 to construct a system of indices to assess poverty that spans the four dimensions of the economy, education, health, and living. We use the spatial autocorrelation test and the spatial Durbin model (SDM) to analyze the spatial effects of urbanization on poverty reduction in these different dimensions. The main conclusions are as follows: (a) China’s urbanization has the characteristics of spatial aggregation and a spatial spillover effect. (b) Different dimensions of poverty had the attributes of spatial agglomeration, and Moran’s index of a reduction in economic poverty was the highest. Under the SDM, the different dimensions of poverty also showed a significant positive spatial correlation. (c) Urbanization has a significant effect on poverty reduction along the dimensions of the economy, education, and living, but has little effect on reducing health poverty. It has a spatial spillover effect on poverty reduction in economic and living contexts. (d) There were spatial differences in the effect of urbanization on relieving economic and living-related poverty

    The title compound 2 was prepared and its crystal structure was determined at 100 K. The neat solid was examined by temperature dependent 57Fe Mössbauer effect (ME) spectroscopy over the interval 92 < T < 318 K, and evidences two diamagnetic Fe(II) sites and one paramagnetic Fe(III) site. The latter shows spin–lattice relaxation, but there is no evidence of electron delocalization among the three iron sites in the above temperature interval. The mean-square-amplitude-of-vibration of the diamagnetic iron site has been determined from the recoil-free fraction ME resonance, and compared to the neutral Fc3COH homologue (1). The ME dynamical data are in good agreement with the Ui,j value at 100 K extracted from the crystallographic results. The ME parameters at 5 K have also been determined with the sample compound embedded in a paraffin wax matrix as well as pelletized with BN

    Selenium level and depressive symptoms in a rural elderly Chinese cohort

    BACKGROUND: Selenium is considered a protective agent against free radicals through the maintenance of better enzyme activity. The few studies examining the relationship between selenium and depression have yielded inconsistent results and none of these studies considered the role of cognitive function in this context. METHODS: A cross-sectional evaluation of 1737 rural Chinese age 65 and over from two provinces in China was conducted. Depressive symptoms were assessed using the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS). Cognitive function was assessed using various cognitive instruments. Selenium measures were obtained from nail samples. Other information collected included demographic characteristics and medical history. Analysis of covariance models were used to identify factors associated with GDS score. RESULTS: Higher selenium levels were associated with lower GDS scores adjusting for demographic and medical conditions (p = 0.0321). However, the association between selenium and depressive symptoms was no longer significant when cognitive function score was adjusted in the model (p = 0.2143). CONCLUSIONS: Higher selenium level was associated with lower depressive symptoms without adjusting for cognition in this cohort. However, after cognition was adjusted in the model the association between selenium and depressive symptoms was no longer significant, suggesting that selenium’s association with depressive symptoms may be primarily through its association with cognitive function

    Preliminary investigation of the eruption time of kimberlite in the Late Devonian in Mengyin, Shandong

    Kimberlite in the Mengyin area serves as an excellent medium for studying the characteristics and evolutionary processes of the Paleozoic mantle. In order to determine the age of the primary calcite within the kimberlite, in situ carbonate U–Pb dating was conducted in the Mengyin area. The results indicate that the primary calcite in the kimberlite originated approximately 383 ± 18 Ma (MSWD = 6.6). This age constraint suggests that the eruption of the kimberlite took place during this period, leading to the thermal alteration of limestone xenoliths, ultimately forming marble. Consequently, it can be inferred that lithospheric thinning occurred no later than the Late Devonian period. Fluid inclusions found within the marble provide further insights into its formation. The recorded formation temperature of the marble ranges from 243°C to 370°C, with a salinity range of 2.57%–14.77% (NaCl). The pressure estimates fall within the range of 3.22–20.70 MPa, indicating a depth mainly between 900 and 1,000 m. Based on these findings, it can be inferred that the overall denudation depth in the west Shandong area, since the Late Devonian, is estimated to be approximately 900–1,000 m. Furthermore, the overall crustal rise rate is estimated to be approximately 3 m/Ma

    A global reference for human genetic variation

    The 1000 Genomes Project set out to provide a comprehensive description of common human genetic variation by applying whole-genome sequencing to a diverse set of individuals from multiple populations. Here we report completion of the project, having reconstructed the genomes of 2,504 individuals from 26 populations using a combination of low-coverage whole-genome sequencing, deep exome sequencing, and dense microarray genotyping. We characterized a broad spectrum of genetic variation, in total over 88 million variants (84.7 million single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), 3.6 million short insertions/deletions (indels), and 60,000 structural variants), all phased onto high-quality haplotypes. This resource includes >99% of SNP variants with a frequency of >1% for a variety of ancestries. We describe the distribution of genetic variation across the global sample, and discuss the implications for common disease studies

    A heterozygous moth genome provides insights into herbivory and detoxification

    How an insect evolves to become a successful herbivore is of profound biological and practical importance. Herbivores are often adapted to feed on a specific group of evolutionarily and biochemically related host plants1, but the genetic and molecular bases for adaptation to plant defense compounds remain poorly understood2. We report the first whole-genome sequence of a basal lepidopteran species, Plutella xylostella, which contains 18,071 protein-coding and 1,412 unique genes with an expansion of gene families associated with perception and the detoxification of plant defense compounds. A recent expansion of retrotransposons near detoxification-related genes and a wider system used in the metabolism of plant defense compounds are shown to also be involved in the development of insecticide resistance. This work shows the genetic and molecular bases for the evolutionary success of this worldwide herbivore and offers wider insights into insect adaptation to plant feeding, as well as opening avenues for more sustainable pest management.Minsheng You

    Finishing the euchromatic sequence of the human genome

    The sequence of the human genome encodes the genetic instructions for human physiology, as well as rich information about human evolution. In 2001, the International Human Genome Sequencing Consortium reported a draft sequence of the euchromatic portion of the human genome. Since then, the international collaboration has worked to convert this draft into a genome sequence with high accuracy and nearly complete coverage. Here, we report the result of this finishing process. The current genome sequence (Build 35) contains 2.85 billion nucleotides interrupted by only 341 gaps. It covers ∌99% of the euchromatic genome and is accurate to an error rate of ∌1 event per 100,000 bases. Many of the remaining euchromatic gaps are associated with segmental duplications and will require focused work with new methods. The near-complete sequence, the first for a vertebrate, greatly improves the precision of biological analyses of the human genome including studies of gene number, birth and death. Notably, the human enome seems to encode only 20,000-25,000 protein-coding genes. The genome sequence reported here should serve as a firm foundation for biomedical research in the decades ahead

    A big data driven analytical framework for energy-intensive manufacturing industries

    Energy-intensive industries account for almost 51% of energy consumption in China. A continuous improvement in energy efficiency is important for energy-intensive industries. Cleaner production has proven itself as an effective way to improve energy efficiency and reduce energy consumption. However, there is a lack of manufacturing data due to the difficult implementation of sensors in harsh production environment, such as high temperature, high pressure, high acid, high alkali, and smoky environment which hinders the implementation of the cleaner production strategy. Thanks to the rapid development of the Internet of Things, many data can be sensed and collected in the manufacturing processes. In this paper, a big data driven analytical framework is proposed to reduce the energy consumption and emission for energy-intensive manufacturing industries. Then, two key technologies of the proposed framework, namely energy big data acquisition and energy big data mining, are utilized to implement energy big data analytics. Finally, an application scenario of ball mills in a pulp workshop of a partner company is presented to demonstrate the proposed framework. The results show that the energy consumption and energy costs are reduced by 3% and 4% respectively.
