The Development of a Content Analysis Model for Assessing Studentsâ Cognitive Learning in Asynchronous Online Discussions
The purpose of this study was to develop and validate a content analysis model for assessing students\u27 cognitive learning in asynchronous online discussions. It adopted a fully mixed methods design, in which qualitative and quantitative methods were employed sequentially for data analysis and interpretation. Specifically, the design was a sequential exploratory (QUALâ quan) design with priority given to qualitative data and methods. Qualitative data were 800 online postings collected in two online courses. Quantitative data were 803 online postings from the same two courses but from different discussion topics and different weeks. During the qualitative process, a grounded theory approach was adopted to construct a content analysis model based on qualitative data. During the quantitative process, chi-square tests and confirmative factor analysis (CFA) which used online postings as cases or observations and was the first of its kind were performed to test if the new model fit the quantitative data
Citrus monstruosa discrimination among several citrus species by multivariate analysis of volatiles: A metabolomic approach
The origin and taxonomy of Citrus monstruosa (Rutaceae) are currently unknown
and thus a nontargeted metabolomic analysis on the flavedo volatiles was performed.
Headspace solid-phase micro extraction coupled with gas chromatography
analysis was applied to eight Citrus spp. including Citrus monstruosa, and the
chemical composition of the volatile organic compounds (VOC) was analyzed to
give a chemical comparison between different Citrus species. Forty-four metabolites
were detected across the species: several monoterpenes were found in all
Citrus spp. and among them limonene comes first in all Citrus spp. ranging from
96.7 to 66.7%. Conversely, some molecules were found to be specific for only a few
of the samples. The classical univariate evaluation of the VOC data is unlikely to
give objective data for the cultivar classification; a multivariate approach, principal
component analysis, is an easy to use, powerful tool. Therefore, a chemometric
comparison between chromatographic data of all Citrus spp. was performed with
the aim of understanding the role of VOC in the discrimination of the eight
studied cultivar
Primary care for young adult cancer survivors: an international perspective.
Contains fulltext :
89604.pdf (publisher's version ) (Closed access)PURPOSE: Internationally, family physicians (FP) are not routinely involved in young adult cancer (YAC) care. In this short report, we would like to make a compelling argument for primary care involvement. METHODS: Comparative descriptions and literature review. RESULTS: Cancer among YAs is rare and usually not the first thing that comes into the FP's mind. Youth is sometimes mistakenly regarded as a protective factor. Across the countries, almost all YACs are treated in tertiary health care facilities with specialists providing the majority of care. Health care services are covered by the universal health insurance in Denmark, The Netherlands, and Canada but not in the US. Once the YAC has completed acute treatment and follow-up care, they often return to the care of the FPs who may potentially be expected to deal with and take action upon any possible medical, mental health, and psychosocial issues the YA cancer patient may present with. The role of the FP in follow-up care seems to be very limited. CONCLUSIONS: YACs in the western world seem to have comparable medical and psychosocial problems. However, the nature of health insurance is such that it impacts differently on the care of this group of cancer patients. Primary care features such as patient-centered, integrated, and comprehensive care over extended periods of time bring the FP into the unique position to provide follow-up for YAC. However, this will require integrating patient's perspectives on their care, professional continuing medical education (CME) initiatives, and an enhanced cooperative effort between those delivering and coordinating cancer care.1 oktober 201
Mental health-care utilization in survivors of childhood cancer and siblings: the Swiss childhood cancer survivor study
PURPOSE: We aimed to (1) describe the utilization of mental health-care in survivors and siblings, the association with severity of distress, and visits to other professionals in distressed survivors not utilizing mental health-care; and (2) identify factors associated with utilization of mental health-care in distressed survivors.
METHODS: Within the Swiss Childhood Cancer Survivor Study, we sent postal questionnaires to all participants aged <16Â years at diagnosis (1976-2003), who survived â„5Â years after diagnosis and were aged â„16Â years at study. Survivors and siblings could indicate if they utilized mental health-care in the past year. Psychological distress was assessed with the Brief Symptom Inventory-18 (BSI-18). Participants with scores Tââ„â57 on two of three scales or the Global Severity Index were considered distressed.
RESULTS: We included 1,602 survivors and 703 siblings. Overall, 160 (10Â %) and 53 (8Â %), utilized mental health-care and 203 (14Â %) and 127 (14Â %) were considered distressed. Among these, 69 (34Â %) survivors and 20 (24Â %) siblings had utilized mental health-care. Participants with higher distress were more likely to utilize mental health-care. Distressed survivors not utilizing mental health-care were more likely to see a medical specialist than nondistressed. In the multivariable regression, factors associated with utilizing mental health-care were higher psychological distress and reporting late effects.
CONCLUSIONS: Our results underline the importance of developing interventional programs and implementing psychological screening in follow-up of survivors. It is also important to systematically address siblings' needs. In follow-up, patients at risk should be informed about existing possibilities or advised to visit mental health professionals
