    Quantitative estimates of velocity sensitivity to surface melt variations at a large Greenland outlet glacier

    This is the publisher's version, also available electronically from "http://www.ingentaconnect.com".The flow speed of Greenland outlet glaciers is governed by several factors, the relative importance of which is poorly understood. The delivery of surface-generated meltwater to the bed of alpine glaciers has been shown to influence glacier flow speed when the volume of water is sufficient to increase basal fluid pressure and hence basal lubrication. While this effect has also been demonstrated on the Greenland ice-sheet margin, little is known about the influence of surface melting on the large, marine-terminating outlet glaciers that drain the ice sheet. We use a validated model of meltwater input and GPS-derived surface velocities to quantify the sensitivity of glacier flow speed to changes in surface melt at Helheim Glacier during two summer seasons (2007–08). Our observations span ∼55 days near the middle of each melt season. We find that relative changes in glacier speed due to meltwater input are small, with variations of ∼45% in melt producing changes in velocity of ∼2–4%. These velocity variations are, however, of similar absolute magnitude to those observed at smaller glaciers and on the ice-sheet margin. We find that the glacier's sensitivity to variations in meltwater input decreases approximately exponentially with distance from the calving front. Sensitivity to melt varies with time, but generally increases as the melt season progresses. We interpret the time-varying sensitivity of glacier flow to meltwater input as resulting from changes in subglacial hydraulic routing caused by the changing volume of meltwater input

    The contribution of schools to supporting the well being of children affected by HIV in eastern Zimbabwe

    OBJECTIVES: Schools are often cited as a source of support for orphans and children affected by HIV/AIDS in populations experiencing generalized HIV epidemics and severe poverty. Here we investigate the success of schools at including and supporting the well being of vulnerable children in rural Zimbabwe. DESIGN: Data from a cross-sectional household survey of 4577 children (aged 6–17 years), conducted between 2009 and 2011, were linked to data on the characteristics of 28 primary schools and 18 secondary schools from a parallel monitoring and evaluation facility survey. METHODS: We construct two measures of school quality (one general and one HIV-specific) and use multivariable regression to test whether these were associated with improved educational outcomes and well being for vulnerable children. RESULTS: School quality was not associated with primary or secondary school attendance, but was associated with children’s being in the correct grade for age [adjusted odds ratio 2.0, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.2–3.5, P = 0.01]. General and HIV-specific school quality had significant positive effects on well being in the primary school-age children (coefficient 5.1, 95% CI 2.4–7.7, P < 0.01 and coefficient 3.0, 95% CI 0.4–5.6, P = 0.02, respectively), but not in the secondary school-age children (P > 0.2). There was no evidence that school quality provided an additional benefit to the well being of vulnerable children. Community HIV prevalence was negatively associated with well being in the secondary school-age children (coefficient −0.7, 95% CI −1.3 to −0.1, P = 0.03). CONCLUSIONS: General and HIV-specific school quality may enhance the well being of primary school-age children in eastern Zimbabwe. Local community context also plays an important role in child well being

    В статье предложен метод автоматического определения масштаба вейвлет-преобразования при локализации квазипериодических последовательностей (текстур, областей с символьной информацией и т.д.) путем анализа функции энергии коэффициентов вейвлет-преобразования. Реализация предложенного метода при разработке приложений, связанных с локализацией и распознаванием символьной информации, повысила универсальность таких систем за счет повышения точности локализации символьной информации путем автоматизации выбора масштаба вейвлет-преобразования.У статті запропоновано метод автоматичного визначення масштабу вейвлет-перетворення при локалізації квазіперіодичних послідовностей (текстур, областей з символьною інформацією (СІ) тощо) шляхом аналізу функції енергії коефіцієнтів вейвлет-перетворення. Реалізація методу при розробці додатків, які пов’язані з локалізацією та розпізнаванням символьної інформації, підвищила універсальність таких систем за рахунок збільшення точності локалізації СІ шляхом автоматизації вибору масштабу вейвлет-перетворення.Method of automatically determining wavelet transform scale on the base of analyzing the function of the energy wavelet transform coefficients is proposed. It is used for localization of quasiperiodic sequences (patterns, areas with character information, etc.). The proposed method is used in image processing systems related to the localization and recognition of the symbolic information. It is allowed to increase versatility of such systems by improving the accuracy localization of the symbolic information by automating choice of scale wavelet transform

    Data management and data analysis techniques in pharmacoepidemiological studies using a pre-planned multi-database approach : a systematic literature review

    PurposeTo identify pharmacoepidemiological multi-database studies and to describe data management and data analysis techniques used for combining data. MethodsSystematic literature searches were conducted in PubMed and Embase complemented by a manual literature search. We included pharmacoepidemiological multi-database studies published from 2007 onwards that combined data for a pre-planned common analysis or quantitative synthesis. Information was retrieved about study characteristics, methods used for individual-level analyses and meta-analyses, data management and motivations for performing the study. ResultsWe found 3083 articles by the systematic searches and an additional 176 by the manual search. After full-text screening of 75 articles, 22 were selected for final inclusion. The number of databases used per study ranged from 2 to 17 (median=4.0). Most studies used a cohort design (82%) instead of a case-control design (18%). Logistic regression was most often used for individual-level analyses (41%), followed by Cox regression (23%) and Poisson regression (14%). As meta-analysis method, a majority of the studies combined individual patient data (73%). Six studies performed an aggregate meta-analysis (27%), while a semi-aggregate approach was applied in three studies (14%). Information on central programming or heterogeneity assessment was missing in approximately half of the publications. Most studies were motivated by improving power (86%). ConclusionsPharmacoepidemiological multi-database studies are a well-powered strategy to address safety issues and have increased in popularity. To be able to correctly interpret the results of these studies, it is important to systematically report on database management and analysis techniques, including central programming and heterogeneity testing.     Evaluation of serum ARGS neoepitope as an osteoarthritis biomarker using a standardized model for exercise-induced cartilage extra cellular matrix turnover

    Summary: Objective: To propose a standardized model for exercise-induced cartilage turnover and investigate residual levels and dynamics of biomarker serum ARGS (sARGS) in primary osteoarthritis (OA) patients and a supportive group of young healthy subjects. Method: The trial is a randomized, cross-over, exploratory study with interventions of exercise and inactivity. 20 subjects with knee OA, as well as 20 young healthy subjects (mean age 25.7 years (range; 19–30), 50% male), underwent cycling, running and resting interventions on separate days one week apart. Blood samples were taken at baseline, immediately, 1, 2, 3 and 24 h after activity start. sARGS was measured by sandwich ELISA. Results: Intraclass correlation between visits were 0.97 and 0.77 for the OA and healthy group, respectively. An acute drop in sARGS in response to high-intensity exercise was observed in both groups. Minute acute sARGS increase was observed in OA subjects in response to moderate intensity running and cycling, which normalized within 24 h. In healthy subjects an acute drop in sARGS was seen immediately after running, but not cycling, and no other changes were observed. A negative correlation between baseline Kellgren-Lawrence (KL) grade and baseline sARGS (r = −0.69, p = 0.002) in OA was found. A negative correlation between age and sARGS was found in healthy subjects (r = −0.67, p = <0.002). Conclusion: sARGS sensitivity to physical activity is considered low and sARGS is a reproducible and stable marker. Minute acute increases in sARGS were observed in the hours following moderate intensity exercise
