This paper examines the relationship between science and religion in the education system of Roman-Catholic Portuguese society. In particular, we explored perceptions of the relationship between science and religion for religious education teachers. We surveyed 198 Portuguese religious education teachers about how they view science and religion. The questionnaires’ results revealed a number of similarities: religious education teachers are highly involved in religious practices and exposed to science; they perceived a compatibility between science and religion; and they have an openness to dialogue between both. They do not adhere to anti-scientific perspectives, but they simultaneously try to limit what can be explained by science. Thus, an interpretative view of dialogue and/or integration seems to best explain the perceptions of religious education teachers of the relationship between science and religion. These findings allow a space of discussion, enabling teachers to possibly foster the science-religion dialogue in their contexts of pedagogical activity.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio

Incompatibility of 'Cleopatra' mandarin rootstock for grafting citrus in Central Amazon, State of Amazonas, Brazil.

ABSTRACT: In sweet orange ?Pêra-Rio? and acid lime ?Tahiti? citrus plants (Citrus spp.) stalked on ?Cleopatra? mandarin, a necrosis in the grafting point was observed, causing plant death and dry fruits. Aiming to identify the causes of changes in the rootstock, which lead to grafting incompatibility, an anatomical study comparing plants with and without symptoms, stalked on Rangpur lime, was performed. In addition, the plant nutritional conditions and soil fertility of orchards were evaluated. Necrotic processes caused by vascular discontinuity between the crown and the rootstock were the main causes of loss in productivity and fruit quality. The incompatibility between the rootstock with the crown of ?Pêra-Rio? orange or ?Tahiti? lime causes plant nutritional imbalance that is not related to low natural fertility of the soil in the region. The results indicated problems in the use of ?Cleopatra? mandarin rootstock with the soil and climatic conditions of the Central Amazon region.

Anomalous pressure effect on the magnetic ordering in multiferroic BiMnO3

We report the magnetic field dependent dc magnetization and the pressure-dependent (pmax ~ 16 kbar) ac susceptibilities Xp(T) on both powder and bulk multiferroic BiMnO3 samples, synthesized in different batches under high pressure. A clear ferromagnetic (FM) transition is observed at TC ~ 100 K, and increases with magnetic field. The magnetic hysteresis behavior is similar to that of a soft ferromagnet. Ac susceptibility data indicate that both the FM peak and its temperature (TC) decrease simultaneously with increasing pressure. Interestingly, above a certain pressure (9 ~ 11 kbar), another peak appears at Tp ~ 93 K, which also decreases with increasing pressure, with both these peaks persisting over some intermediate pressure range (9 ~ 13 kbar). The FM peak disappears with further application of pressure; however, the second peak survives until present pressure limit (pmax ~ 16 kbar). These features are considered to originate from the complex interplay of the magnetic and orbital structure of BiMnO3 being affected by pressure.Comment: 4 pages,4 figures, publised in Physical Review B 78, 092404/200

Infrared phonon dynamics of multiferroic BiFeO3 single crystal

We discuss the first infrared reflectivity measurement on a BiFeO3 single crystal between 5 K and room temperature. The 9 predicted ab-plane E phonon modes are fully and unambiguously determined. The frequencies of the 4 A1 c-axis phonons are found. These results settle issues between theory and data on ceramics. Our findings show that the softening of the lowest frequency E mode is responsible for the temperature dependence of the dielectric constant, indicating that the ferroelectric transition in BiFeO3 is soft-mode driven.Comment: 5 pages (figures included

Abstract Aim:The major purpose of this study was to evaluate alternative automated methods of collecting data on health related quality of life (HR-QoL). In order to achieve this, we developed a study with the following objectives: (1) to evaluated the feasibility of electronic version in patients with different chronic pathologies of the immune system using Short Form 36version2 (SF-36v2), (2) to evaluate the construct validity of SF-36v2 using the electronic data capture, and (3) to compare electronic version questionnaires with paper questionnaires in terms of patients ´ acceptance, data quality, and reliability. Methods:Out-patients with chronic immune diseases (HIV infection, lupus, scleroderma, rheumatoid arthritis, Behçet and Sjögren), were randomly selected to completed electronic and paper SF- 36v2 (n=50) before consultation in Clinical Immunology Unit, in Hospital Santo António-Centro Hospitalar do Porto (CI-HGSA). Results: There were very high correlations in SF- 36v2 responses (p< .001) between the paper and electronic forms. Internal reliability coefficients (Cronbach’s a) showed good internal consistency for all reported responses in either, computer and paper. There were no missing data in electronic version or paper. About 84% of the patients prefer to use the computer version in future. Conclusion: The electronic HR-QoL assessment is technically possible and it can provide reliable and valid clinically significant information which can either be used in routine care appointments

    Stabilization of heterodimensional cycles

We consider diffeomorphisms ff with heteroclinic cycles associated to saddles PP and QQ of different indices. We say that a cycle of this type can be stabilized if there are diffeomorphisms close to ff with a robust cycle associated to hyperbolic sets containing the continuations of PP and QQ. We focus on the case where the indices of these two saddles differ by one. We prove that, excluding one particular case (so-called twisted cycles that additionally satisfy some geometrical restrictions), all such cycles can be stabilized.Comment: 31 pages, 9 figure

Evaluation of dry bean genotypes for phosphorus use efficiency in tropical acid soil.

    Get PDF
Dry bean is an important legume for South American population and phosphorus deficiency is most yield limiting nutrient for crop production in South American soils. A greenhouse experiment was conducted with the objective to evaluate influence of P fertilization on dry matter and grain yield of 30 dry bean genotypes. The P levels used were O mg P kq and 200 mg P kg' soil. Dry matter and grain yield were significantly influenced with P as well as genotype treatments. The P X genotype interaction was also significant for these traits, indicating different responses of genotypes at two P levels
