Unexpectedly large mass loss during the thermal pulse cycle of the red giant R Sculptoris!
The asymptotic giant branch star R Sculptoris is surrounded by a detached
shell of dust and gas. The shell originates from a thermal pulse during which
the star undergoes a brief period of increased mass loss. It has hitherto been
impossible to constrain observationally the timescales and mass-loss properties
during and after a thermal pulse - parameters that determine the lifetime on
the asymptotic giant branch and the amount of elements returned by the star.
Here we report observations of CO emission from the circumstellar envelope and
shell around R Sculptoris with an angular resolution of 1.3 arcsec. What was
hitherto thought to be only a thin, spherical shell with a clumpy structure, is
revealed to contain a spiral structure. Spiral structures associated with
circumstellar envelopes have been seen previously, from which it was concluded
that the systems must be binaries. Using the data, combined with hydrodynamic
simulations, we conclude that R Sculptoris is a binary system that underwent a
thermal pulse approximately 1800 years ago, lasting approximately 200 years.
About 0.003 Msun of mass was ejected at a velocity of 14.3 km s-1 and at a rate
approximately 30 times higher than the prepulse mass-loss rate. This shows that
approximately 3 times more mass is returned to the interstellar medium during
and immediately after a pulse than previously thought.Comment: Accepted by Natur
On a stochastic partial differential equation with non-local diffusion
In this paper, we prove existence, uniqueness and regularity for a class of
stochastic partial differential equations with a fractional Laplacian driven by
a space-time white noise in dimension one. The equation we consider may also
include a reaction term
Molecular Dynamics Simulation of Spinodal Decomposition in Three-Dimensional Binary Fluids
Using large-scale molecular dynamics simulations of a two-component
Lennard-Jones model in three dimensions, we show that the late-time dynamics of
spinodal decomposition in concentrated binary fluids reaches a viscous scaling
regime with a growth exponent , in agreement with experiments and a
theoretical analysis for viscous growth.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
Discrete exterior calculus (DEC) for the surface Navier-Stokes equation
We consider a numerical approach for the incompressible surface Navier-Stokes
equation. The approach is based on the covariant form and uses discrete
exterior calculus (DEC) in space and a semi-implicit discretization in time.
The discretization is described in detail and related to finite difference
schemes on staggered grids in flat space for which we demonstrate second order
convergence. We compare computational results with a vorticity-stream function
approach for surfaces with genus 0 and demonstrate the interplay between
topology, geometry and flow properties. Our discretization also allows to
handle harmonic vector fields, which we demonstrate on a torus.Comment: 21 pages, 9 figure
1D Exciton Spectroscopy of Semiconductor Nanorods
We have theoretically shown that optical properties of semiconductor nanorods
are controlled by 1D excitons. The theory, which takes into account anisotropy
of spacial and dielectric confinement, describes size dependence of interband
optical transitions, exciton binding energies. We have demonstrated that the
fine structure of the ground exciton state explains the linear polarization of
photoluminescence. Our results are in good agreement with the measurements in
CdSe nanorods
New 1,2,3-Triazole/1,2,4-triazole Hybrids as Aromatase Inhibitors: Design, Synthesis, and Apoptotic Antiproliferative Activity
A novel series of 1,2,3-triazole/1,2,4-triazole hybrids 5a, 5b, and 6aâi was designed and synthesized as antiproliferative agents targeting aromatase enzymes. The antiproliferative activity of the new hybrids against four cancer cells was studied using Erlotinib as a control. Compounds 6a and 6b demonstrated the highest antiproliferative activity among these hybrids, with GI50 values of 40 nM and 35 nM, respectively. Compound 6b was the most potent derivative, with a GI50 of 35 nM, comparable to Erlotinibâs GI50 of 33 nM. Compound 6b inhibited all cancer cell lines with comparable efficacy to Erlotinib. Compounds 5a, 5b, and 6aâi were tested for inhibitory action against aromatase as a potential target for their antiproliferative activity. Results revealed that compounds 6a and 6b were the most potent aromatase inhibitors, with IC50 values of 0.12 ± 0.01 ”M and 0.09 ± 0.01 ”M, respectively, being more potent than the reference Ketoconazole (IC50 = 2.6 ± 0.20 ”M) but less potent than Letrozole (IC50 = 0.002 ± 0.0002). These findings indicated that compounds 6a and 6b had significant aromatase inhibitory action and are potential antiproliferative candidates. The findings were further linked to molecular docking investigations, which gave models of strong interactions with the aromatase domain for inhibitors with high binding scores
May Measurement Month 2017: an analysis of blood pressure screening in Sudan-Northern Africa and Middle East
Elevated blood pressure (BP) is a growing burden worldwide, leading to over 10 million deaths each year. Sudan has the second highest prevalence of hypertension in North Africa. One in four people with a non-communicable disease has hypertension. May Measurement Month (MMM) is a global initiative, aimed at raising awareness of high BP to act as a temporary solution to the lack of screening programs worldwide. The MMM screening survey provided an opportunity to correlate between unique risk factors and BP levels among Sudanese population. Such an approach allows for directing efforts towards setting the appropriate preventive measures as opposed to disease treatment. An opportunistic cross-sectional survey of volunteers aged â„18 was carried out in May 2017. Blood pressure measurement, the definition of hypertension and statistical analysis followed the standard MMM protocol. The study was conducted at 100 sites distributed in four states: Khartoum, Gezira, Blue Nile, and Kassala. Overall, a total of 44â413 participants were enrolled in the survey. After imputation, 7332 out of 44â118 participants with an available mean of the second and third readings had hypertension (16.6%). A total of 6956 (15.9%) participants were found to have hypertension of the 43â742 who were not receiving treatment. Among participants who were on treatment, 155 out of 374 (41.3%) had uncontrolled BP. After adjusting for age and sex, systolic and diastolic BP's were significantly higher in those receiving antihypertensive treatment, with a previous history of stroke and with elevated body mass index. Systolic BP was significantly higher in people with diabetes and with previous myocardial infarction. Smoking was associated with increased diastolic BP and decreased systolic BP. Alcohol intake as well as BP measurement on left vs. right arm had no association with BP reading. The MMM17 was the largest BP screening campaign ever held in the country. A considerable percentage of detected hypertensives were not on treatment with a significant proportion of uncontrolled hypertension among those on treatment. These results suggest that opportunistic screening can identify significant numbers with raised BP

V5852 Sgr : an unusual nova possibly associated with the Sagittarius stream
We report spectroscopic and photometric follow-up of the peculiar nova V5852~Sgr (discovered as OGLE-2015-NOVA-01), which exhibits a combination of features from different nova classes. The photometry shows a flat-topped light curve with quasi-periodic oscillations, then a smooth decline followed by two fainter recoveries in brightness. Spectroscopy with the Southern African Large Telescope shows first a classical nova with an Fe II or Fe IIb spectral type. In the later spectrum, broad emissions from helium, nitrogen and oxygen are prominent and the iron has faded which could be an indication to the start of the nebular phase. The line widths suggest ejection velocities around 1000 km s-1. The nova is in the direction of the Galactic bulge and is heavily reddened by an uncertain amount. The V magnitude 16 days after maximum enables a distance to be estimated and this suggests that the nova may be in the extreme trailing stream of the Sagittarius dwarf spheroidal galaxy. If so it is the first nova to be detected from that, or from any dwarf spheroidal galaxy. Given the uncertainty of the method and the unusual light curve we cannot rule out the possibility that it is in the bulge or even the Galactic disk behind the bulge.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe
