This study aims to analyze the prevalence of self-reported diabetes and its associated factors in the Brazilian adult population. It is a cross-sectional study using the 2019 National Health Survey. Prevalence and crude prevalence ratios (PRc) and adjusted prevalence ratios (PRa) of self-reported diabetes were estimated, with confidence intervals (95% CI), using Poisson regression. In the 82,349 adults, the prevalence of self-reported diabetes was 7.7%. Positively associated factors were: advanced age with greater association after 60 years (PRa 24.87; 95%CI 15.78-39.18); living in the Northeast (PRa 1.16; 95%CI 1.04-1.29), Southeast (PRa 1.27; 95% CI 1.14-1.43), South (PRa 1.18; 95%CI 1, 05- 1.34), and Midwest (PRa 1.21; 95%CI 1.06- 1.38); being a former smoker (PRa 1.17; 95%CI 1.09-1.27); self-assessment of regular health (PRa 2.41; 95%CI 2.21-2.64), bad/very bad (PRa 3.45; 95%CI 3.06-3.88); having heart disease (PRa 1.81; 95%CI 1.64-2.00), hypertension (PRa 2.84; 95%CI 2.60-3.69), high cholesterol (PRa 2.22; 95%CI 2.05-2.41), overweight (PRa 1.49; 95%CI 1.36-1.64), and obesity (PRa 2.25; 95%CI 2.05- 2.47). It could be concluded that diabetes in Brazilian adults is associated with sociodemographic factors, aging, lifestyle, and morbidities. These results can guide public policies for the prevention and control of disease in Brazil.O estudo analisa a prevalência de diabetes autorreferido e fatores associados na população adulta brasileira.

Information and risk : how investor-state disputes affect global policy diffusion
I propose an informational mechanism to explain how multinational corporations (MNCs) use Investor-State disputes to slow down the global spread of costly regulations to their businesses. I rely on a multi-methods strategy to analyze my proposition in the context of the limited diffusion of certain anti-smoking policies around the world. First, the statistical analysis of novel, monthly-data for a sample of 95 countries from 1973 to 2016 reveals that anti-smoking policies challenged by international lawsuits diffused at slower speeds relative to comparable undisputed policies, while cases were ongoing. Second, primary and secondary qualitative sources and in-depth interviews demonstrate that scarce information around these lawsuits induced both sued and third governments to delay the adoption of the challenged policies. Specifically, I show that governments inexperienced with international arbitration decided to wait for more information on the cases before deciding whether to adopt the disputed regulations. After information was revealed, developed countries
estimated they could bear the risk of a potential costly lawsuit and promptly adopted the disputed policies, while developing countries did not. My findings indicate that MNCs can use Investor-State disputes to place countries in a world of scarce information, and hence affect their sovereign powers by slowing down their policy-making
processes.Governmen

Corporations and global regulation : challenges and opportunities for state regulatory powers
Scholars and the public alike have long shared concerns about corporate influence on sovereign states' regulatory powers. However, despite the documentation of some well-known cases of corporate interference with government regulation, an investigation of the overarching mechanism that drives both corporations' willingness and ability to shape regulatory processes is lacking. This dissertation builds on Stigler (1971)'s insight that government regulation is often a corporate demand because of its potential to create an external environment conducive to private benefits. The proposed argument posits that highly innovative firms within complex industries are more likely to support regulatory initiatives proposed by governments, both at the domestic and global levels, because these firms have an interest in locking in a favorable regulatory environment for the exercise of their competitive advantage over rivals. Such support by innovative firms should accelerate the adoption and spread of regulations across countries. On the other hand, less innovative firms within low-complexity industries should be more likely to try to delay or block regulation, thus contributing to slower regulatory processes. I employ a variety of novel data sources to test a series of observable implications derived from this theory at the levels of analysis of global industries, domestic industries, individual firms and specific regulations. I estimate statistical models that leverage the measurement of not only the likelihood of corporate influence on regulation and the direction of such influence, but also of its effects on the timing and pace of regulatory initiatives. I also employ qualitative evidence obtained from interviews and from the analysis of primary and secondary sources to illustrate the mechanism proposed. Results largely corroborate the positive relationship between corporate innovativeness, support for regulation and the acceleration of global regulatory processes. They also show that even though less innovative firms can effectively delay governments' regulatory efforts, such effects can be limited and temporary. These results imply that solutions for complex global problems in areas such as environmental protection and public health can be facilitated by committed governments and innovative corporations. However, by devising policies that benefit innovative firms, governments might end up over empowering already large and politically influential corporationsGovernmen
