    Respiration Rates of Two Midge Species at Different Temperatures

    Respiration values for Chironomus n. sp. ranged from 0.11 mm³ O₂ /mg/hr at 5C to 0.44 mm³ O₂. /gm/hr at 25C. The range for Chaoborus punctipennis was from 0.15 mm³ O₂ /mg/hr at 5C to 0.56 mm³ O₂ /mg/hr at 25C. These low respiratory rates allow the two species to withstand low oxygen tensions for extended periods of time. Reflecting this ability, both species attained their greatest numerical and biomass values in the profundal regions of three strip-mine lakes whose lower waters become oxygen depleted during thermal stratification

Let \la_{n,1},...,\la_{n,n} be the eigenvalues of (1nXjk)1j,kn(\frac{1}{\sqrt{n}}X_{jk})_{1\leq j,k\leq n}. The strong circular law theorem states that with probability one, the empirical spectral distribution \frac{1}{n}(\de_{\la_{n,1}}+...+\de_{\la_{n,n}}) converges weakly as nn\to\infty to the uniform law over the unit disc \{z\in\dC;|z|\leq1\}. In this short note, we provide an elementary argument that allows to add a deterministic matrix MM to (Xjk)1j,kn(X_{jk})_{1\leq j,k\leq n} provided that Tr(MM)=O(n2)\mathrm{Tr}(MM^*)=O(n^2) and \mathrm{rank}(M)=O(n^\al) with \al<1.     MKP1 mediates resistance to therapy in HER2-positive breast tumors.

    Mitogen-activated protein kinase phosphatase 1 (MKP1 or DUSP1) is an antiapoptotic phosphatase that is overexpressed in many cancers, including breast cancer. MKP1 expression is inducible in radiation-treated breast cancer cells, and correlates with human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (ERBB2, HER2) expression. The role of MKP1 in therapy resistance suggests that targeting MKP1 in HER2-positive breast tumors may significantly enhance the efficacy of anti-HER2 and other anticancer therapies

    Theoretical evaluation of MTF and charge collection efficiency in CCD and CMOS image sensor

    Classical models used to calculate the Modulation Transfer function (MTF) of a solid-state image sensor generally use a sinusoidal type of illumination. The approach, described in this paper, consists in considering a point-source illumination to built a theoretical three dimensional model of the diffusion and the collection of photo-carriers created within the image sensor array. Fourier transform formalism is used for this type of illumination. Solutions allow to evaluate the spatial repartition of the charge density collected in the space charge region, i.e. to get the Pixel Response Function (PRF) formulation. PRF enables to calculate analytically both MTF and crosstalk at every needed wavelengths. The model can take into account a uniformly doped substrate and an epitaxial layer grown on a highly doped substrate. The built-in electric field induced by the EPI/Substrate doping gradient is also taken into account. For these configurations, MTF, charge collection efficiency and crosstalk proportion are calculated. The study is established in the case of photodiode pixel but it can be easily extended to pinned photodiode pixels and photogate pixels

    Functional Approach to Quantum Decoherence and the Classical Final Limit

    For a wide set of quantum systems it is demonstrated that the quantum regime can be considered as the transient phase while the final classical statistical regime is a permanent state. A basis where exact matrix decoherence appears for these final states is found. The relation with the decoherence of histories formalism is studied.     Alkalinization during re-oxygenation prevents functional damage by hyperglycaemic hypoxia

    HYPERGLYCAEMIA impairs recovery from transient cerebral ischaemia: the importance of tissue acidification for this phenomenon has not been clarified in detail. We investigated this issue in a less complex in vitro preparation of isolated rat dorsal spinal roots exposed for 30 min to hyperglycaemic hypoxia. Peak height of compound action potentials recovered minimally in 5 mM bicarbonate. However, recovery was greatly improved by addition of the weak base trimethylamine during re-oxygenation. Addition of the weak acid propionate had no such effect. Cytoplasmic alkalinization improved recovery in a brief time window only: application of trimethylamine after 15 min of re-oxygenation was without beneficial effect. These data emphasize the importance of cytoplasmic acidification for neurophysiological recovery from hyper-glycaemic hypoxia during the initial period of re-oxygenation

    Oosagitta gen. nov. from tropical Africa, with revision of two species and description of four new species (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae, Galerucinae)

    After our taxonomic revision of Ootheca Chevrolat, 1837, and the description of Oothecoides Kortenhaus & Wagner, 2011 and Ootibia Kortenhaus & Wagner, 2012, it became clear that a further four galerucine species, closely related to the above named taxa, form a distinct monophyletic group, that constitutes a new genus, Oosagitta gen. nov. with O. anningae sp. nov., O. geescheae sp. nov., O. melanopicta sp. nov. and O. thomasi sp. nov.. Exosoma angolensis Laboissière, 1939, the type species of the new genus, and Ergana minuta Laboissière, 1937 are newly transferred to Oosagitta gen. nov. All species of Oosagitta gen. nov. are characterized by a broad body and pronotum, a more or less convex dorsum and short legs, and as such are most similar to the other above named genera. The antennae of Oosagitta gen. nov. are distinctly longer than those of Ootheca, Oothecoides and Ootibia. Genital structures of the males allow a reliable identifi cation of the genus. (Re-) descriptions are given for all species, including semi-schematic illustrations depicting the habitus outline, shape of the basal antennomeres and the median lobe.
