Simultaneous Impact of the Presence of Foreign MNEs on Indigenous Firms’ Exports and Domestic Sales

YesIncorporating the global production network approach and competitor analysis, this paper establishes an analytical framework with two hypotheses for the role of foreign multinational enterprises (FMNEs) in indigenous firms’ exports and domestic sales. First, the presence of FMNEs as a whole is likely to have a negative impact on indigenous firms’ domestic sales but a simultaneous positive impact on their exports in an emerging economy like China. Second, the presence of MNEs from Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan (HMT MNEs) is more likely to generate this pattern of impact than MNEs from other countries (Other FMNEs). The FDI-led export strategy contributed to the dominance of the scenario described by the first hypothesis in China, while a higher degree of market commonality and resource similarity of HMT MNEs with that of indigenous Chinese firms than Other FMNEs leads to the second hypothesis. These novel hypotheses are tested and supported by a very large and recent firm-level panel dataset from Chinese manufacturing

Preventing and treating discitis: cephazolin penetration in ovine lumbar intervertebral disc

Infection can occur after any spinal procedure that violates the disc and although it is not common, the potential consequences are serious. Treatment of discitis is not always successful and the key to management is prevention. Intradiscal prophylaxis with antibiotic is routinely used in spinal surgery, but there is a limited understanding of how well antibiotics can enter the avascular disc after intravenous injection. An in vivo ovine study to optimise prophylactic and parenteral treatment of discitis is described to assess the effectiveness of cephazolin in preventing and treating infection. The concentration of cephazolin was measured in disc tissue from normal and degenerate sheep discs to determine if cephazolin can enter the disc and if disc degeneration affects antibiotic uptake. Fourteen sheep were deliberately inoculated with bacteria to induce discitis. Eight sheep (“prophylaxis” group) were given either a 0, 1, 2 or 3 g dose of prophylactic cephazolin before inoculation while the remaining sheep (“treatment” group) were treated with cephazolin commencing 7 days after inoculation for 21 days at a dose of 50 mg/kg/day. Histopathology and radiography were used to assess the effect of the different treatments. Cephazolin was given 30 min prior to sacrifice and the intradiscal concentration was measured by biochemistry. In the “prophylaxis” group all doses of antibiotic provided some protection against infection, although it was not dose dependent. In the “treatment” group discitis was confirmed radiologically and histologically in all animals from 2 weeks onwards. Biochemical assay confirmed that antibiotic is distributed throughout the disc but was present in higher concentration in the anulus fibrosus than the nucleus pulposus. This study demonstrated that whilst the incidence of iatrogenic discitis can be reduced by antibiotic prophylaxis, it could not be abolished in all incidences with a broad-spectrum antibiotic such as cephazolin. Furthermore, antibiotics were ineffective at preventing endplate destruction once an intradiscal inoculum was established

Synthesis and electrochemical characterization of nitrogen-doped and nitrogen–phosphorus-doped multi-walled carbon nanotubes

Nitrogen-doped and nitrogen–phosphorus-doped multi-walled carbon nanotubes (N-MWCNTs and N–PMWCNTs, respectively) were fabricated by chemical vapor deposition and characterized using scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy in combination with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy. The electrochemical response of N-MWCNTs and N–P-MWCNTs towards ferrocyanide/ferricyanide was initially studied. The findings exhibit weakening of electrochemical response and sensitivity of nanotubes with phosphorus doping, and thus, within the composite films tested, those consist exclusively of N-MWCNTs exhibit the greatest electrocatalytic activity. N–P-MWCNT film was further applied for individual electrochemical analysis of ascorbic acid (AA), uric acid (UA), and dopamine (DA), and lower limits of detections of 11.6, 7.8, and 1.9 μM were estimated, respectively. The findings demonstrate that AA does not interfere with UA, but considerable interference of AA in analysis of DA was observed. Thus, the simultaneous analysis of AA, UA, and DA on N–P-MWCNTs appears to be restricted

Simultaneous ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament and ossification of the ligamentum flavum causing upper thoracic myelopathy in DISH: case report and literature review

    No full text
A rare case of a 44-year-old Chinese male with diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH) and simultaneous ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL) and ossification of the ligamentum flavum (OLF) at T1–2 causing thoracic myelopathy is reported herein. Posterior decompression without extirpating the OPLL was performed at T1–2. Postoperatively, symptoms were greatly improved, with remaining hyperreflexia and Grade 4/5 muscle strength in the lower extremities. The Japanese Orthopedic Association score improved from 5 preoperatively to 9 at final follow-up. The presence of a cyst due to leakage of cerebrospinal fluid was confirmed by MRI at day 27, but it resolved after conservative management. The clinical manifestation of DISH, the relationship among DISH, OPLL, and OLF, and management of thoracic myelopathy due to OPLL and OLF were reviewed
