    People in different age groups show different hip-joint morphology

    It has been suggested that the distribution of the subchondral bone density may be regarded as the expression of the long-term effective stress in a joint, and previous results indicate the regularity of the distribution of subchondral bone density as a function of the passing demands made upon a joint. Computed tomography-osteoabsorptiometry has been developed to visualize the area distribution of subchondral mineralization in the major joints in vivo. The purpose of this study was to display the distribution of subchondral bone density in the acetabular cup of patients of different ages. Computer tomography data files of hip joints of 27 patients (18–89 years) were used. Density ranges, image analysis, and area presentation of the distribution of subchondral mineralization are presented. The maximal subchondral mineralization in young persons is found both in the ventral and dorsal part of the acetabular roof. In older people, however, the densest areas are most often found at the zenith of the acetabulum. These morphological results could be well explained by the experimental results of other authors who found a joint incongruity in young persons with contact areas in the ventral and dorsal part of the acetabulum. With advancing age a decrease in incongruence is found, leading to an increased stress in the dome, i.e. in the area where degenerative changes are often found

    A Front-End Technique for Automatic Noisy Speech Recognition

    The sounds in a real environment not often take place in isolation because sounds are building complex and usually happen concurrently. Auditory masking relates to the perceptual interaction between sound components. This paper proposes modeling the effect of simultaneous masking into the Mel frequency cepstral coefficient (MFCC) and effectively improve the performance of the resulting system. Moreover, the Gammatone frequency integration is presented to warp the energy spectrum which can provide gradually decaying the weights and compensate for the loss of spectral correlation. Experiments are carried out on the Aurora-2 database, and frame-level cross entropy-based deep neural network (DNN-HMM) training is used to build an acoustic model. While given models trained on multi-condition speech data, the accuracy of our proposed feature extraction method achieves up to 98.14% in case of 10dB, 94.40% in 5dB, 81.67% in 0dB and 51.5% in -5dB, respectively

    Nearest-neighbour distribution of distances in crystals from extended X-ray absorption fine structure

    Extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) is a powerful probe of the distribution of nearest-neighbour distances around selected atomic species. We consider here the effect of vibrational disorder in crystals. The potential of EXAFS for the accurate evaluation of the coefficient of bond thermal expansion and its temperature dependence is discussed, with the aim of stimulating and facilitating the comparison with the results from total scattering experiments. The meaning of the distribution asymmetry in crystals and its connection with the effective potential anharmonicity and the bond expansion is quantitatively explored by comparing the results for a number of different systems. The extent of the relative atomic vibrations perpendicular to the bond direction and the perpendicular to parallel anisotropy are correlated with the extent of lattice negative thermal expansion as well as with the ionic mobility in superionic crystals

    Metamaterial-Inspired Quad-Band Notch Filter for LTE Band Receivers and WPT Applications

    A new compact quad-band notch filter (QBNF) based on the extended composite right and left-handed transmission line (E-CRLH TL) has been presented. As known, E-CRLH TL behaves like a quad-band structure. A microstrip TL which is loaded with an open-ended ECRLH TL is presented as a QBNF. Four unwanted frequencies were used in a dual-band LTE receiver as four notch frequencies which must be eliminated (0.9 GHz, 1.3 GHz, 2.55 GHz, and 3.35 GHz). Also, this QBNF can be applied to simultaneous wireless power and data transfer (SWPDT) system to isolate the wireless power circuit from the data communication circuit. A design technique for the proposed QBNF is presented and its performance is validated using full-wave simulation results and theoretical analysis. The main advantage of this design is an overall rejection greater than 20dB at selected unwanted frequencies. Good agreements between the fullwave simulation and equivalent circuit model results have been achieved which verified the effectiveness of the proposed circuit model. The proposed QBNF is designed on an FR-4 substrate and the dimension of the proposed QBNF is 20 * 22 mm

    Van Hove singularity and spontaneous Fermi surface symmetry breaking in Sr3Ru2O7

    The most salient features observed around a metamagnetic transition in Sr3Ru2O7 are well captured in a simple model for spontaneous Fermi surface symmetry breaking under a magnetic field, without invoking a putative quantum critical point. The Fermi surface symmetry breaking happens in both a majority and a minority spin band but with a different magnitude of the order parameter, when either band is tuned close to van Hove filling by the magnetic field. The transition is second order for high temperature T and changes into first order for low T. The first order transition is accompanied by a metamagnetic transition. The uniform magnetic susceptibility and the specific heat coefficient show strong T dependence, especially a log T divergence at van Hove filling. The Fermi surface instability then cuts off such non-Fermi liquid behavior and gives rise to a cusp in the susceptibility and a specific heat jump at the transition temperature.Comment: 11 pages, 4 figure

    Work-related cultural differences, which were familiarized by scholars such as Hall and Hofstede, offer important concepts to help us understand various forms of cooperation and communication. However, the predominant focus of cultural analysis on collectivistic harmony prevents us from gaining an understanding of strategy and conflict. In an attempt to grasp how conflicts are handled, a political analysis can provide new insights. This is illustrated by a comparative study of two CEOs who gave public statements concerning management failure: Shouhei Nozawa of Yamaichi and Paul Smits of KPN. Their statements were strikingly different in several ways, but the classical insights of cross-cultural analysis can only partly explain the differences. This is where political analysis comes in, focusing on interest relationships, responsibilities and virtues, tactics and strategy

    Correlation between magnetic and crystal structural sublattices in palladium-doped FeRh alloys: Analysis of the metamagnetic phase transition driving forces

    FeRh alloys doped with the third element exhibit a change in the lattice and magnetic subsystems, which are manifested in antiferromagnetic- ferromagnetic (AFM-FM) first-order phase transition temperature, the shrinkage of the temperate hysteresis under transition, and the reduction of the saturation magnetization. All aforementioned parameters are crucial for practical applications. To control them it is quite important to determine the driving forces of the metamagnetic transition and its origins. In this manuscript ab initio calculations and experimental studies results are presented, which demonstrate the correlation between the structural and magnetic properties of the Fe50Rh50−xPdx alloys. The qualitative analysis of the metamagnetic phase transition driving forces in palladium-doped FeRh alloys was performed to determine their contribution to the evolution of magnetic and lattice subsystems.
