Comparing Evolutionary Operators, Search Spaces, and Evolutionary Algorithms in the Construction of Facial Composites
Facial composite construction is one of the most successful applications of interactive evolutionary computation.
In spite of this, previous work in the area of composite construction has not investigated the
algorithm design options in detail. We address this issue with four experiments. In the first experiment a
sorting task is used to identify the 12 most salient dimensions of a 30-dimensional search space. In the second
experiment the performances of two mutation and two recombination operators for interactive genetic
algorithms are compared. In the third experiment three search spaces are compared: a 30-dimensional
search space, a mathematically reduced 12-dimensional search space, and a 12-dimensional search space
formed from the 12 most salient dimensions. Finally, we compare the performances of an interactive
genetic algorithm to interactive differential evolution. Our results show that the facial composite construction
process is remarkably robust to the choice of evolutionary operator(s), the dimensionality of the search
space, and the choice of interactive evolutionary algorithm. We attribute this to the imprecise nature of human
face perception and differences between the participants in how they interact with the algorithms.
Povzetek: Kompozitna gradnja obrazov je ena izmed najbolj uspešnih aplikacij interaktivnega evolucijskega
ra?cunanja. Kljub temu pa do zdaj na podro?cju kompozitne gradnje niso bile podrobno raziskane
možnosti snovanja algoritma. To vprašanje smo obravnavali s štirimi poskusi. V prvem je uporabljeno
sortiranje za identifikacijo 12 najbolj izstopajo?cih dimenzij 30-dimenzionalnega preiskovalnega prostora.
V drugem primerjamo u?cinkovitost dveh mutacij in dveh rekombinacijskih operaterjev za interaktivni
genetski algoritem. V tretjem primerjamo tri preiskovalne prostore: 30-dimenzionalni, matemati?cno reducirani
12-dimenzionalni in 12-dimenzionalni prostor sestavljen iz 12 najpomembnejših dimenzij. Na
koncu smo primerjali uspešnost interaktivnega genetskega algoritma z interaktivno diferencialno evolucijo.
Rezultati kažejo, da je proces kompozitne gradnje obrazov izredno robusten glede na izbiro evolucijskega
operatorja(-ev), dimenzionalnost preiskovalnega prostora in izbiro interaktivnega evolucijskega algoritma.

ISEE-3 observations of a viscously-driven plasma sheet: magnetosheath mass and/or momentum transfer?
International audienceA statistical analysis of data from the ISEE-3 distant tail campaign is presented. We investigate the mechanism driving slow, tailward flows observed in the plasma sheet. The possibility that these slow flows are driven by mass and/or momentum transfer across the distant tail magnetopause is explored. We establish that 40% of these flows could be driven by the transfer of approximately 4% of the magnetosheath momentum flux into the magnetotail. Current understanding of the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability suggests that this figure is consistent with the amount of momentum flux transfer produced by this mechanism. We also consider the possibility that these flows are solely driven by transferring magnetosheath plasma across the magnetopause. We find that there is sufficient mass observed on these field lines for this to be the sole driving mechanism for only 27% of the observed slow flows
Physiological and clinical consequences of relief of right ventricular outflow tract obstruction late after repair of congenital heart defects.
BACKGROUND: Right ventricular outflow tract obstruction (RVOTO) is a common problem after repair of congenital heart disease. Percutaneous pulmonary valve implantation (PPVI) can treat this condition without consequent pulmonary regurgitation or cardiopulmonary bypass. Our aim was to investigate the clinical and physiological response to relieving RVOTO. METHODS AND RESULTS: We studied 18 patients who underwent PPVI for RVOTO (72% male, median age 20 years) from a total of 93 who had this procedure for various indications. All had a right ventricular outflow tract (RVOT) gradient >50 mm Hg on echocardiography without important pulmonary regurgitation (less than mild or regurgitant fraction <10% on magnetic resonance imaging [MRI]). Cardiopulmonary exercise testing, tissue Doppler echocardiography, and MRI were performed before and within 50 days of PPVI. PPVI reduced RVOT gradient (51.4 to 21.7 mm Hg, P<0.001) and right ventricular systolic pressure (72.8 to 47.3 mm Hg, P<0.001) at catheterization. Symptoms and aerobic (25.7 to 28.9 mL.kg(-1).min(-1), P=0.002) and anaerobic (14.4 to 16.2 mL.kg(-1).min(-1), P=0.002) exercise capacity improved. Myocardial systolic velocity improved acutely (tricuspid 4.8 to 5.3 cm/s, P=0.05; mitral 4.7 to 5.5 cm/s, P=0.01), whereas isovolumic acceleration was unchanged. The tricuspid annular velocity was not maintained on intermediate follow-up. Right ventricular end-diastolic volume (99.9 to 89.7 mL/m2, P<0.001) fell, whereas effective stroke volume (43.7 to 48.3 mL/m2, P=0.06) and ejection fraction (48.0% to 56.8%, P=0.01) increased. Left ventricular end-diastolic volume (72.5 to 77.4 mL/m2, P=0.145), stroke volume (45.3 to 50.6 mL/m2, P=0.02), and ejection fraction (62.6% to 65.8%, P=0.03) increased. CONCLUSIONS: PPVI relieves RVOTO, which leads to an early improvement in biventricular performance. Furthermore, it reduces symptoms and improves exercise tolerance. These findings have important implications for the management of this increasingly common condition

Hún var að lokum greind með nesidioblastosis. Hér verður fjallað um sjúkratilfellið auk yfirferðar um þennan sjaldgæfa sjúkdóm og uppvinnslu á honum.A previously healthy 18 year old female has repeated admissions over a six week period to the emergency department because of seizures. She has no previous history of epilepsy and denies any drug use. Imaging and electroencephalogram do not indicate epilepsy. Blood sugar levels are low on two occasions, 1.3 mmol / L and 1.7mmól / L (4.0 - 6.0 mmol / L). After further investigations the suspicion of an insulin-producing tumor arises. Extensive research and imaging is conducted to look for tumor growth without any findings. Subsequently she was sent abroad for further evaluation with a 11C-5HTP-PET scan, selective angiography with celiacography and an intra-arterial calcium stimulation test. Herpes simplex encephalitis in Iceland 1987-2011.

This article is open access.Herpes simplex encephalitis (HSE) is a serious disease with 10-20% mortality and high rate of neuropsychiatric sequelae. This study is a long-term, nationwide study in a single country, Iceland. Clinical data were obtained from patient records and from DNA PCR and antibody assays of CSF. Diagnosis of HSE was classified as definite, possible or rejected based on symptoms, as well as virological, laboratory and brain imaging criteria. A total of 30 definite cases of HSE were identified during the 25 year period 1987-2011 corresponding to incidence of 4.3 cases/106 inhabitants/year. Males were 57% of all patients, median age 50 years (range, 0-85). Fever (97%), cognitive deficits (79%), impaired consciousness (79% with GCS < 13), headache (55%) and seizures (55%) were the most common symptoms. Brain lesions were found in 24 patients (80%) by MRI or CT. All patients received intravenous acyclovir for a mean duration of 20 days. Three patients (10%) died within one year and 21/28 pts (75%) had a Karnofsky performance score of <70% with memory loss (59%), dysphasia (44%), frontal symptoms (44%) and seizures (30%) as the most frequent sequelae. Mean delay from onset of symptoms to treatment was 6 days; this was associated with adverse outcome. In conclusion, the incidence of `HSE is higher than recently reported in a national registry study from Sweden. Despite advances in rapid diagnosis and availability of treatment of HSE, approximately three of every four patients die or are left with serious neurological impairment
Interactive Evolutionary Algorithms for Image Enhancement and Creation
Image enhancement and creation, particularly for aesthetic purposes, are tasks for which the use of interactive evolutionary algorithms would seem to be well suited. Previous work has concentrated on the development of various aspects of the interactive evolutionary algorithms and their application to various image enhancement and creation problems. Robust evaluation of algorithmic design options in interactive evolutionary algorithms and the comparison of interactive evolutionary algorithms to alternative approaches to achieving the same goals is generally less well addressed.
The work presented in this thesis is primarily concerned with different interactive evolutionary algorithms, search spaces, and operators for setting the input values required by image processing and image creation tasks. A secondary concern is determining when the use of the interactive evolutionary algorithm approach to image enhancement problems is warranted and how it compares with alternative approaches. Various interactive evolutionary algorithms were implemented and compared in a number of specifically devised experiments using tasks of varying complexity. A novel aspect of this thesis, with regards to other work in the study of interactive evolutionary algorithms, was that statistical analysis of the data gathered from the experiments was performed. This analysis demonstrated, contrary to popular assumption, that the choice of algorithm parameters, operators, search spaces, and even the underlying evolutionary algorithm has little effect on the quality of the resulting images or the time it takes to develop them. It was found that the interaction methods chosen when implementing the user interface of the interactive evolutionary algorithms had a greater influence on the performances of the algorithms

Distant plasma sheet ion distributions during reconnection
Previous models of the plasma sheet following reconnection and current sheet acceleration predict 'lima-bean' ion distributions. These are inconsistent with observational constraints. We postulate that following initial interaction with the current sheet, a fraction of outflow ions are backscattered and re-encounter the current sheet. Fermi acceleration processes then generate an additional high-energy outflow population. In the backscatter region these ions form a complete shell in velocity space, providing sufficient pressure to support weak fields. Further from the current sheet, where backscatter is less efficient, a hemispherical shell of ions moves away from the current sheet, and field strengths are nearer the external lobe value. The fastest ions stream ahead of the bulk population to form the plasma sheet boundary layer. This model predicts a multi-layered plasma sheet structure, consistent with recent GEOTAIL observations
