Emotion Socialization, Emotional Competence, and Social Competence and Maladjustment in Early Childhood
In this study of preschool children and parents (N=64), we examined relations between two facets of parents\u27 emotion socialization: direct and indirect socialization; three facets of children\u27s emotional competence: emotion expression, regulation, and understanding; and their relations with children\u27s social and emotional adjustment. Few associations were observed between indicators of parents\u27 emotion socialization and among indicators of children\u27s emotional competence, suggesting that these constructs are better understood as multi-faceted, rather than unitary processes. Additionally, aspects of children\u27s emotional competence linked--both directly and indirectly--parents\u27 emotion socialization behaviors and children\u27s social and emotional adjustment. Results are discussed with regard to the role of parents\u27 emotion socialization and children\u27s emotional competence, especially emotion regulation, in children\u27s adjustment during preschool

Ezra Pound's 'Poetico-Political Mission' and the Revival of Confucianism in Modern China
The following essay attempts to compare and collate Ezra Pound's poetico-political 'mission' of redeeming the West through his interpretations, translations and commentaries of the Confucian system of thinking with the ongoing revival of Confucius in China. Did Pound's poetico-political visions of a Confucian framework for the Western world consider whether or not Confucianism had ever taken root in Ancient China much less in modern China ? Is present day China's return to the Old Master a re-idolisation of him or a promotional stimulus to her globalising crusade ? Or can this return be interpreted as the spiritual and cultural asset to sustain and nurture her global élan ? Where does the 'real' Figure of Confucius lie between Pound's poetico-political 'mission' and China's own mission to influence the world ? Indeed, my readings of Pound's meditations on Confucian thinking, and their poetic and political implications in today's ever-expanding Chinese economy, may explain, relatively speaking, the Chinese Communist Party's need to accompany its economic and technological discourses, challenges and drives by a Mentor whose towering momentiousness, however 'ancient' or 'antiquated', confers to these discourses, challenges and drives, a powerful civilising Figure, whose rectitude, probity and virtue quell or mitigate any untoward consequence of these economic and technological adventures, purvey them a sound and stable humanised or enlightened resource. College football and the Vegas line: Deconstruction and arbitrage
We examine the Vegas line in college football games by employing two separate regression models to deconstruct the Vegas line and actual margin of victory for 4,590 unique contests from the 2005 through 2011 seasons. A comparison of these two models suggests which factors represent a true relationship with the margin of victory and which reflect bettor biases. An additional model of the margin of victory illustrates which factors the Vegas line systematically misrepresents. The authors find a number of factors inadequately priced in the Vegas line that help explain variation in the actual margin of victory. Using a holdout dataset comprised of the 2012 and 2013 seasons we identify the magnitude of any mispricing and opportunities for arbitrage. We exploit this mispricing to develop and evaluate profitable betting strategies. A strategy betting on the top 35% mispriced games yields 55% correct picks and a 2.7% APY. A second strategy in which only the top 8% of mispriced games are bet yields 59% correct picks and a 5.9% APY
Not So Fast, My Friend: Biases in College Football Polls
The national championship game in Division IA football is selected in part by voters. Are the voters biased? Examining all weekly rankings from 2004 to 2008, the authors find the following results. Voters in the USA Today (Coaches') Poll tend to rank their team's recent opponents 4.3 places higher than the average voting coach and rank the recent opponents of their alma mater 3.2 places higher. Additionally, both coaches and sports media (AP Poll) overassess teams who play in certain Bowl Championship Series (BCS) conferences relative to non-BCS conferences and reward 'running up the score' by voting teams with high offensive output above their peers.voting; sports; bias; college football
