    Mineral Elements Content of some Coarse Grains used as staple Food in Kano Metropolis, Nigeria

    Analysis of mineral elements were carried out on some coarse grains used as staple food in Kano metropolis. The levels of Magnesium, Calcium, Manganese, Iron, Copper and Zinc were determined using atomic absorption spectrophotometer (AAS), and that of Sodium and Potassium were obtained using flame photometer (FES). The result of the study shows that the mean results of the mineral elements ranged in mg/kg from 62.50±0.55 - 84.82±0.74 sodium, 73.33±0.35 - 317±0.10 magnesium, 89.22±0.26 - 193.33±0.19 potassium, 70.00±0.52 - 186.67±0.29 calcium, 1.00±0.11 - 20.50±1.30 manganese, 25.00±0.11 - 80.50±0.36 iron. 4.00±0.08 - 13.00±0.24 copper and 15.00±0.34 - 50.50±0.24 zinc. There was significant difference (p<0.05) in levels of sodium, potassium and calcium between the varieties of coarse grains whereas no significant differences (p>0.05) occur in levels of magnesium, manganese, copper and zinc between the varieties of coarse grains. In comparison with Recommended Dietary Allowances of essential and trace metals set by international standard organizations, the coarse grains analyzed in this work contribute little to the provision of essential and trace elements requirements.Keywords: Mineral Elements, Coarse Grains, Staple Food, Kano, Nigeria

    Towards the AlexNet Moment for Homomorphic Encryption: HCNN, theFirst Homomorphic CNN on Encrypted Data with GPUs

    Deep Learning as a Service (DLaaS) stands as a promising solution for cloud-based inference applications. In this setting, the cloud has a pre-learned model whereas the user has samples on which she wants to run the model. The biggest concern with DLaaS is user privacy if the input samples are sensitive data. We provide here an efficient privacy-preserving system by employing high-end technologies such as Fully Homomorphic Encryption (FHE), Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) and Graphics Processing Units (GPUs). FHE, with its widely-known feature of computing on encrypted data, empowers a wide range of privacy-concerned applications. This comes at high cost as it requires enormous computing power. In this paper, we show how to accelerate the performance of running CNNs on encrypted data with GPUs. We evaluated two CNNs to classify homomorphically the MNIST and CIFAR-10 datasets. Our solution achieved a sufficient security level (> 80 bit) and reasonable classification accuracy (99%) and (77.55%) for MNIST and CIFAR-10, respectively. In terms of latency, we could classify an image in 5.16 seconds and 304.43 seconds for MNIST and CIFAR-10, respectively. Our system can also classify a batch of images (> 8,000) without extra overhead

    Malaysian International Islamic Financial Centre was set up by Malaysian government to transform Malaysia into a vibrant International Islamic Financial hub. Malaysian Central Bank plays an important role in this transformation. One of the efforts is through the formal speeches delivered by the Central Governor, where it could be used to create and direct the necessary actions. Their speeches within and outside the company are important in motivating others and gaining support for their plan (Hartog, 1997). This study was designed to discover the application of the canon of logos by Malaysian Central Bank Governor, Dr. Zeti Akhtar Aziz. A modified version of neo Aristotelian criticism was used to analyse three formal speeches delivered locally with the focus of Islamic Finance products and services, from 2002 to 2006. This analysis indicated that Dr. Zeti only applied four types of proofs in her speeches; example of quantification, explanations, fact and serial examples. It could be due to the audiences, who were mostly local where they were exposed to the extensive exposure and education program on the Islamic banking done by local commercial banks. Practically, this study could assist and guide corporate leaders, especially those from banking industry to advance their business rhetorical skills in a more practical way

    Multi-GPU design and performance evaluation of homomorphic encryption on GPU clusters

    We present a multi-GPU design, implementation and performance evaluation of the Halevi-Polyakov-Shoup (HPS) variant of the Fan-Vercauteren (FV) levelled Fully Homomorphic Encryption (FHE) scheme. Our design follows a data parallelism approach and uses partitioning methods to distribute the workload in FV primitives evenly across available GPUs. The design is put to address space and runtime requirements of FHE computations. It is also suitable for distributed-memory architectures, and includes efficient GPU-to-GPU data exchange protocols. Moreover, it is user-friendly as user intervention is not required for task decomposition, scheduling or load balancing. We implement and evaluate the performance of our design on two homogeneous and heterogeneous NVIDIA GPU clusters: K80, and a customized P100. We also provide a comparison with a recent shared-memory-based multi-core CPU implementation using two homomorphic circuits as workloads: vector addition and multiplication. Moreover, we use our multi-GPU Levelled-FHE to implement the inference circuit of two Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) to perform homomorphically image classification on encrypted images from the MNIST and CIFAR - 10 datasets. Our implementation provides 1 to 3 orders of magnitude speedup compared with the CPU implementation on vector operations.     Insecticidal, brine shrimp cytotoxicity, antifungal and nitric oxide free radical scavenging activities of the aerial parts of Myrsine africana L.

    The crude methanolic extract and various fractions derived from the aerial parts of Myrsine africana were screened in vitro for possible insecticidal, antifungal, brine shrimp lethality and nitric oxide free radical scavenging activities. Low insecticidal activity (20 %) was shown by chloroform (CHCl3) and aqueous fractions against Tribolium castaneum and Rhizopertha dominica, respectively. Good cytotoxic activity (66.66 %) was shown by the n-hexane fraction of the plant at 1000 μg/ml. The rest of the fractions showed low lethality at higher doses. No antifungal activity was observed for the crude extract and fractions screened against various fungal strains. The plant crude extract and fractions showed a concentration dependent nitric oxide free radical scavenging activity.Key words: Myrsine africana, insecticidal, brine shrimp lethality, antifungal and nitric oxide free radical scavenging assay

    Human β-galactoside α-2,3-sialyltransferase (ST3Gal III) attenuated Taxol-induced apoptosis in ovarian cancer cells by downregulating caspase-8 activity

    Taxol triggers apoptosis in a variety of cancer cells, but it also upregulates cytoprotective proteins and/or pathways that compromise its therapeutic efficacy. In this report, we found that Taxol treatment resulted in caspase-8-dependent apoptosis in SKOV3 human ovarian cancer cells. Moreover, Taxol-induced apoptosis was associated with caspase-3 activation. Interestingly, Taxol treatment upregulated α-2,3-sialyltransferase (ST3Gal III) expression and forced expression of ST3Gal III attenuated Taxol-induced apoptosis. Furthermore, ST3Gal III overexpression inhibited Taxol-ttiggered caspase-8 activation, indicating that ST3Gal III upregulation produces cellular resistance to Taxol and hence reduces the efficacy of Taxol therapy

    Cytotoxic Effect of Ethanol Extract of Convolvulus arvensis L (Convolvulaceae) on Lymphoblastic Leukemia Jurkat Cells

    Purpose: To evaluate the cytotoxic effect of ethanol extract of aerial parts of Convolvulus arvensis against lymphoblastic leukemia, Jurkat cells.Methods: The aerial parts of C. arvensis were collected, identified, powdered and soaked in ethanol. The extract was filtered and evaporated, and the residue assessed for cytotoxic activity in Jurkat cell line. The cells were exposed to different concentrations (10, 25, 50, 75 and 100 μg/mL) of the extract to determine cell viability, cell proliferation, apoptosis using Trypan blue exclusion assay, 3-(4,5- dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-5-(3-carboxymethoxyphenyl)-2-(4-sulfophenyl)-2H-tetrazolium (MTS) assay and fluorescent activated cell sorter (FACS) analysis, respectively.Results: Trypan blue exclusion assay and MTS assay results indicate that the ethanol extract decreased the number of living cells in a concentration-dependent fashion. The results of FACS analysis showed that the lowest concentration of the extract (10 μg/mL) was most effective for the induction of apoptosis as it induced maximum apoptosis (85.34 %) and the highest concentration (100 μg/mL) was less effective as it induced less apoptosis (53.70 %) in Jurkat cells (p < 0.05).Conclusion: The ethanol extract of C. arvensis has significant cytotoxic activity against the selected cancer cell line.     An Enhanced Energy Balanced Data Transmission Protocol for Underwater Acoustic Sensor Networks.

    This paper presents two new energy balanced routing protocols for Underwater Acoustic Sensor Networks (UASNs); Efficient and Balanced Energy consumption Technique (EBET) and Enhanced EBET (EEBET). The first proposed protocol avoids direct transmission over long distance to save sufficient amount of energy consumed in the routing process. The second protocol overcomes the deficiencies in both Balanced Transmission Mechanism (BTM) and EBET techniques. EBET selects relay node on the basis of optimal distance threshold which leads to network lifetime prolongation. The initial energy of each sensor node is divided into energy levels for balanced energy consumption. Selection of high energy level node within transmission range avoids long distance direct data transmission. The EEBET incorporates depth threshold to minimize the number of hops between source node and sink while eradicating backward data transmissions. The EBET technique balances energy consumption within successive ring sectors, while, EEBET balances energy consumption of the entire network. In EEBET, optimum number of energy levels are also calculated to further enhance the network lifetime. Effectiveness of the proposed schemes is validated through simulations where these are compared with two existing routing protocols in terms of network lifetime, transmission loss, and throughput.     Parasiticidal, antifungal and antibacterial activities of Onosma griffithii Vatke

    Onosma griffithii was screened for possible pharmacological activities. The crude methanolic extract (MeOH) and its fractions demonstrated parasiticidal activity (IC 50 (ìg/ml ± S.D) = 31.03 ± 0.23) against Leishmania major. Based on the IC 50 values, the potency of the standard drug (Pentamidine) and test fractions were of the order as: Pentamidine > crude extract > n-hexane fraction > ethyl acetate (ETOAc) fraction > chloroform fraction (CHCl3) fraction > n-butanol (BUOH) fraction > aqueous fraction. Similarlymoderate antifungal activity was displayed by the crude methanolic extract against Aspergillus flavus and Fusarium solani. Against the Staphylococcus aureus, the aqueous fraction demonstrated moderate antibacterial activity
