Euclidean random matrix theory: low-frequency non-analyticities and Rayleigh scattering
By calculating all terms of the high-density expansion of the euclidean
random matrix theory (up to second-order in the inverse density) for the
vibrational spectrum of a topologically disordered system we show that the
low-frequency behavior of the self energy is given by and not , as claimed previously.
This implies the presence of Rayleigh scattering and long-time tails of the
velocity autocorrelation function of the analogous diffusion problem of the

On a kinetic model for a simple market economy
In this paper, we consider a simple kinetic model of economy involving both
exchanges between agents and speculative trading. We show that the kinetic
model admits non trivial quasi-stationary states with power law tails of Pareto
type. In order to do this we consider a suitable asymptotic limit of the model
yielding a Fokker-Planck equation for the distribution of wealth among
individuals. For this equation the stationary state can be easily derived and
shows a Pareto power law tail. Numerical results confirm the previous analysis
Coherent Control of Quantum Dynamics with Sequences of Unitary Phase-Kick Pulses
Coherent optical control schemes exploit the coherence of laser pulses to
change the phases of interfering dynamical pathways in order to manipulate
dynamical processes. These active control methods are closely related to
dynamical decoupling techniques, popularized in the field of Quantum
Information. Inspired by Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy,
dynamical decoupling methods apply sequences of unitary operations to modify
the interference phenomena responsible for the system dynamics thus also
belonging to the general class of coherent control techniques. Here we review
related developments in the fields of coherent optical control and dynamical
decoupling, with emphasis on control of tunneling and decoherence in general
model systems. Considering recent experimental breakthroughs in the
demonstration of active control of a variety of systems, we anticipate that the
reviewed coherent control scenarios and dynamical decoupling methods should

Fluctuations in granular gases
A driven granular material, e.g. a vibrated box full of sand, is a stationary
system which may be very far from equilibrium. The standard equilibrium
statistical mechanics is therefore inadequate to describe fluctuations in such
a system. Here we present numerical and analytical results concerning energy
and injected power fluctuations. In the first part we explain how the study of
the probability density function (pdf) of the fluctuations of total energy is
related to the characterization of velocity correlations. Two different regimes
are addressed: the gas driven at the boundaries and the homogeneously driven
gas. In a granular gas, due to non-Gaussianity of the velocity pdf or lack of
homogeneity in hydrodynamics profiles, even in the absence of velocity
correlations, the fluctuations of total energy are non-trivial and may lead to
erroneous conclusions about the role of correlations. In the second part of the
chapter we take into consideration the fluctuations of injected power in driven
granular gas models. Recently, real and numerical experiments have been
interpreted as evidence that the fluctuations of power injection seem to
satisfy the Gallavotti-Cohen Fluctuation Relation. We will discuss an
alternative interpretation of such results which invalidates the
Gallavotti-Cohen symmetry. Moreover, starting from the Liouville equation and
using techniques from large deviation theory, the general validity of a
Fluctuation Relation for power injection in driven granular gases is
questioned. Finally a functional is defined using the Lebowitz-Spohn approach
for Markov processes applied to the linear inelastic Boltzmann equation
relevant to describe the motion of a tracer particle. Such a functional results
to be different from injected power and to satisfy a Fluctuation Relation.Comment: 40 pages, 18 figure
The use of biomedicine, complementary and alternative medicine, and ethnomedicine for the treatment of epilepsy among people of South Asian origin in the UK
Studies have shown that a significant proportion of people with epilepsy use complementary and alternative medicine (CAM). CAM use is known to vary between different ethnic groups and cultural contexts; however, little attention has been devoted to inter-ethnic differences within the UK population. We studied the use of biomedicine, complementary and alternative medicine, and ethnomedicine in a sample of people with epilepsy of South Asian origin living in the north of England.
Interviews were conducted with 30 people of South Asian origin and 16 carers drawn from a sampling frame of patients over 18 years old with epilepsy, compiled from epilepsy registers and hospital databases. All interviews were tape-recorded, translated if required and transcribed. A framework approach was adopted to analyse the data.
All those interviewed were taking conventional anti-epileptic drugs. Most had also sought help from traditional South Asian practitioners, but only two people had tried conventional CAM. Decisions to consult a traditional healer were taken by families rather than by individuals with epilepsy. Those who made the decision to consult a traditional healer were usually older family members and their motivations and perceptions of safety and efficacy often differed from those of the recipients of the treatment. No-one had discussed the use of traditional therapies with their doctor. The patterns observed in the UK mirrored those reported among people with epilepsy in India and Pakistan.
The health care-seeking behaviour of study participants, although mainly confined within the ethnomedicine sector, shared much in common with that of people who use global CAM. The appeal of traditional therapies lay in their religious and moral legitimacy within the South Asian community, especially to the older generation who were disproportionately influential in the determination of treatment choices. As a second generation made up of people of Pakistani origin born in the UK reach the age when they are the influential decision makers in their families, resort to traditional therapies may decline. People had long experience of navigating plural systems of health care and avoided potential conflict by maintaining strict separation between different sectors. Health care practitioners need to approach these issues with sensitivity and to regard traditional healers as potential allies, rather than competitors or quacks
Transport coefficients for inelastic Maxwell mixtures
The Boltzmann equation for inelastic Maxwell models is used to determine the
Navier-Stokes transport coefficients of a granular binary mixture in
dimensions. The Chapman-Enskog method is applied to solve the Boltzmann
equation for states near the (local) homogeneous cooling state. The mass, heat,
and momentum fluxes are obtained to first order in the spatial gradients of the
hydrodynamic fields, and the corresponding transport coefficients are
identified. There are seven relevant transport coefficients: the mutual
diffusion, the pressure diffusion, the thermal diffusion, the shear viscosity,
the Dufour coefficient, the pressure energy coefficient, and the thermal
conductivity. All these coefficients are {\em exactly} obtained in terms of the
coefficients of restitution and the ratios of mass, concentration, and particle
sizes. The results are compared with known transport coefficients of inelastic
hard spheres obtained analytically in the leading Sonine approximation and by
means of Monte Carlo simulations. The comparison shows a reasonably good
agreement between both interaction models for not too strong dissipation,
especially in the case of the transport coefficients associated with the mass

Random walk with barriers: Diffusion restricted by permeable membranes
Restrictions to molecular motion by barriers (membranes) are ubiquitous in
biological tissues, porous media and composite materials. A major challenge is
to characterize the microstructure of a material or an organism
nondestructively using a bulk transport measurement. Here we demonstrate how
the long-range structural correlations introduced by permeable membranes give
rise to distinct features of transport. We consider Brownian motion restricted
by randomly placed and oriented permeable membranes and focus on the
disorder-averaged diffusion propagator using a scattering approach. The
renormalization group solution reveals a scaling behavior of the diffusion
coefficient for large times, with a characteristically slow inverse square root
time dependence. The predicted time dependence of the diffusion coefficient
agrees well with Monte Carlo simulations in two dimensions. Our results can be
used to identify permeable membranes as restrictions to transport in disordered
materials and in biological tissues, and to quantify their permeability and

Tumours in 177 pet hamsters
Background: Even though tumours are considered to occur frequently in pet hamsters, there is only a small number of scientific reports in current literature.
Methods: Pathological reports from 177 hamsters were evaluated.
Results: Of these, 78 were male and 75 were female. Median age of affected hamsters was 12 months (range 2–34). Integumental tumours were the most common neoplasms (62%, 109/177). As far as species was known, the number of Syrian hamsters (52%, 30/58) affected by tumours seemed to be lower than the number of affected dwarf hamsters (85%, 47/55). Tumours of the hematopoietic system were the second most frequently neoplasms (17%, 30/177). Relative number of neoplasms of the endocrine system, tumours of the digestive system (1.7%, 3/177) and other tumours (4%, 7/177 each) was low. The majority of integumental tumours were epithelial (66%; 91/126).
Conclusion: This study aimed to analyze data from veterinary surgeries and pathological institutes about the occurrence of spontaneous tumours in Syrian hamsters and dwarf hamsters to give information about the frequency of tumours, prognosis and survival time. This is the first study about tumours in pet hamsters in Germany so far
Potential health risks of complementary alternative medicines in cancer patients
Many cancer patients use complementary alternative medicines (CAMs) but may not be aware of the potential risks. There are no studies quantifying such risks, but there is some evidence of patient risk from case reports in the literature. A cross-sectional survey of patients attending the outpatient department at a specialist cancer centre was carried out to establish a pattern of herbal remedy or supplement use and to identify potential adverse side effects or drug interactions with conventional medicines. If potential risks were identified, a health warning was issued by a pharmacist. A total of 318 patients participated in the study. Of these, 164 (51.6%) took CAMs, and 133 different combinations were recorded. Of these, 10.4% only took herbal remedies, 42.1% only supplements and 47.6% a combination of both. In all, 18 (11.0%) reported supplements in higher than recommended doses. Health warnings were issued to 20 (12.2%) patients. Most warnings concerned echinacea in patients with lymphoma. Further warnings were issued for cod liver/fish oil, evening primrose oil, gingko, garlic, ginseng, kava kava and beta-carotene. In conclusion, medical practitioners need to be able to identify the potential risks of CAMs. Equally, patients should be encouraged to disclose their use. Also, more research is needed to quantify the actual health risks
Moxibustion for cancer care: a systematic review and meta-analysis
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Moxibustion is a traditional Chinese method that uses the heat generated by burning herbal preparations containing <it>Artemisia vulgaris </it>to stimulate acupuncture points. Considering moxibustion is closely related to acupuncture, it seems pertinent to evaluate the effectiveness of moxibustion as a treatment of symptoms of cancer. The objective of this review was to systematically assess the effectiveness of moxibustion for supportive cancer care.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We searched the literature using 11 databases from their inceptions to February 2010, without language restrictions. We included randomised clinical trials (RCTs) in which moxibustion was employed as an adjuvant treatment for conventional medicine in patients with any type of cancer. The selection of studies, data extraction, and validations were performed independently by two reviewers.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Five RCTs compared the effects of moxibustion with conventional therapy. Four RCTs failed to show favourable effects of moxibustion for response rate compared with chemotherapy (n = 229, RR, 1.04, 95% CI 0.94 to 1.15, P = 0.43). Two RCTs assessed the occurrence of side effects of chemotherapy and showed favourable effects of moxibustion. A meta-analysis showed significant less frequency of nausea and vomiting from chemotherapy for moxibustion group (n = 80, RR, 0.38, 95% CIs 0.22 to 0.65, P = 0.0005, heterogeneity: χ<sup>2 </sup>= 0.18, P = 0.67, I<sup>2 </sup>= 0%).</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The evidence is limited to suggest moxibustion is an effective supportive cancer care in nausea and vomiting. However, all studies have a high risk of bias so effectively there is not enough evidence to draw any conclusion. Further research is required to investigate whether there are specific benefits of moxibustion for supportive cancer care.</p
