    FUSE Observations of Outflowing OVI in the Dwarf Starburst Galaxy NGC1705

    We report FUSE far-UV spectroscopy of the prototypical dwarf starburst galaxy NGC 1705. These data allow us for the first time to probe the coronal-phase gas (T = 10E5 to 10E6 K) that may dominate the radiative cooling of the supernova-heated ISM and thereby determine the dynamical evolution of starburst-driven outflows. We detect a broad (100 km/s) and blueshifted (by 80 km/s) OVI absorption-line arising in the previously-known galactic outflow. The properties of the OVI absorption are inconsistent with the standard superbubble model in which this gas arises in a conductive interface inside the outer shell. We show that the superbubble in NGC 1705 is blowing out of the galaxy ISM. During blow-out, coronal-phase gas can be created by hydrodynamical mixing as hot gas rushes out through fissures in the fragmenting shell of cool gas. As the coronal gas cools radiatively, it can naturally produce the observed OVI column density and outflow speed. The OVI data show that the cooling rate in the coronal-phase gas is less than about 10% of the supernova heating rate. Since the X-ray luminosity from hotter gas is even smaller, we conclude that radiative losses are insignificant. The outflow should be able to vent its metals and kinetic energy out of the galaxy.     Using Group Model Building to Understand Factors That Influence Childhood Obesity in an Urban Environment

    Background: Despite increased attention, conventional views of obesity are based upon individual behaviors, and children and parents living with obesity are assumed to be the primary problem solvers. Instead of focusing exclusively on individual reduction behaviors for childhood obesity, greater focus should be placed on better understanding existing community systems and their effects on obesity. The Milwaukee Childhood Obesity Prevention Project is a community-based coalition established to develop policy and environmental change strategies to impact childhood obesity in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The coalition conducted a Group Model Building exercise to better understand root causes of childhood obesity in its community. Methods: Group Model Building is a process by which a group systematically engages in model construction to better understand the systems that are in place. It helps participants make their mental models explicit through a careful and consistent process to test assumptions. This process has 3 main components: (1) assembling a team of participants; (2) conducting a behavior-over-time graphs exercise; and (3) drawing the causal loop diagram exercise. Results: The behavior-over-time graph portion produced 61 graphs in 10 categories. The causal loop diagram yielded 5 major themes and 7 subthemes. Conclusions: Factors that influence childhood obesity are varied, and it is important to recognize that no single solution exists. The perspectives from this exercise provided a means to create a process for dialogue and commitment by stakeholders and partnerships to build capacity for change within the community

    Outlying HII Regions in HI-Selected Galaxies

    We present results from the first systematic search for outlying HII regions, as part of a sample of 96 emission-line point sources (referred to as ELdots - emission-line dots) derived from the NOAO Survey for Ionization in Neutral Gas Galaxies (SINGG). Our automated ELdot-finder searches SINGG narrow-band and continuum images for high equivalent width point sources outside the optical radius of the target galaxy (> 2 X r25 in the R-band). Follow-up longslit spectroscopy and deep GALEX images (exposure time > 1000 s) distinguish outlying HII regions from background galaxies whose strong emission lines ([OIII], Hbeta or [OII]) have been redshifted into the SINGG bandpass. We find that these deep GALEX images can serve as a substitute for spectroscopic follow-up because outlying HII regions separate cleanly from background galaxies in color-color space. We identify seven SINGG systems with outlying massive star formation that span a large range in Halpha luminosities corresponding to a few O stars in the most nearby cases, and unresolved dwarf satellite companion galaxies in the most distant cases. Six of these seven systems feature galaxies with nearby companions or interacting galaxies. Furthermore, our results indicate that some outlying HII regions are linked to the extended-UV disks discovered by GALEX, representing emission from the most massive O stars among a more abundant population of lower mass (or older) star clusters. The overall frequency of outlying HII regions in this sample of gas-rich galaxies is 8 - 11% when we correct for background emission-line galaxy contamination (~75% of ELdots).Comment: 20 pages, 14 Figures, Accepted by A

Thus, this review was carried out to discuss the principal foundations of the use of additives in fish nutrition. Research is being developed in this direction in different animal species with satisfactory results at all stages of production cycles. This paper presents the results achieved by the use of food additives in the production of fish as ace of performance and health characteristics.El avance de la acuicultura y la creciente demanda de alimentos de origen animal, junto con la preocupación por la seguridad alimentaria de los consumidores, están ocasionando que aumente la atención de la producción ganadera, la contaminación ambiental y sus complicaciones. Por lo tanto, esta revisión se llevó a cabo para discutir los fundamentos esenciales de la utilización de aditivos en la alimentación de peces. La investigación se está llevando a cabo en este sentido en diferentes especies animales con resultados satisfactorios en todas las etapas de los ciclos de producción.     The Sextet Arcs: a Strongly Lensed Lyman Break Galaxy in the ACS Spectroscopic Galaxy Survey towards Abell 1689

    We present results of the HST Advanced Camera for Surveys spectroscopic ground-based redshift survey in the field of A1689. We measure 98 redshifts, increasing the number of spectroscopically confirmed objects by sixfold. We present two spectra from this catalog of the Sextet Arcs, images which arise from a strongly-lensed Lyman Break Galaxy (LBG) at a redshift of z=3.038. Gravitational lensing by the cluster magnifies its flux by a factor of ~16 and produces six separate images with a total r-band magnitude of r_625=21.7. The two spectra, each of which represents emission from different regions of the LBG, show H I and interstellar metal absorption lines at the systemic redshift. Significant variations are seen in Ly-alpha profile across a single galaxy, ranging from strong absorption to a combination of emission plus absorption. A spectrum of a third image close to the brightest arc shows Ly-alpha emission at the same redshift as the LBG, arising from either another spatially distinct region of the galaxy, or from a companion galaxy close to the LBG. Taken as a group, the Ly-alpha equivalent width in these three spectra decreases with increasing equivalent width of the strongest interstellar absorption lines. We discuss how these variations can be used to understand the physical conditions in the LBG. Intrinsically, this LBG is faint, ~0.1L*, and forming stars at a modest rate, ~4 solar masses per year. We also detect absorption line systems toward the Sextet Arcs at z=2.873 and z=2.534. The latter system is seen across two of our spectra.Comment: Accepted for publication in Ap

    On Pattern Selection for Laparoscope Calibration

    Camera calibration is a key requirement for augmented reality in surgery. Calibration of laparoscopes provides two challenges that are not sufficiently addressed in the literature. In the case of stereo laparoscopes the small distance (less than 5mm) between the channels means that the calibration pattern is an order of magnitude more distant than the stereo separation. For laparoscopes in general, if an external tracking system is used, hand-eye calibration is difficult due to the long length of the laparoscope. Laparoscope intrinsic, stereo and hand-eye calibration all rely on accurate feature point selection and accurate estimation of the camera pose with respect to a calibration pattern. We compare 3 calibration patterns, chessboard, rings, and AprilTags. We measure the error in estimating the camera intrinsic parameters and the camera poses. Accuracy of camera pose estimation will determine the accuracy with which subsequent stereo or hand-eye calibration can be done. We compare the results of repeated real calibrations and simulations using idealised noise, to determine the expected accuracy of different methods and the sources of error. The results do indicate that feature detection based on rings is more accurate than a chessboard, however this doesn’t necessarily lead to a better calibration. Using a grid with identifiable tags enables detection of features nearer the image boundary, which may improve calibration

    ACS Observations of a Strongly Lensed Arc in a Field Elliptical

    We report the discovery of a strongly lensed arc system around a field elliptical galaxy in Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) images of a parallel field observed during NICMOS observations of the HST Ultra-Deep Field. The ACS parallel data comprise deep imaging in the F435W, F606W, F775W, and F850LP bandpasses. The main arc is at a radius of 1.6 arcsec from the galaxy center and subtends about 120 deg. Spectroscopic follow-up at Magellan Observatory yields a redshift z=0.6174 for the lensing galaxy, and we photometrically estimate z_phot = 2.4\pm0.3 for the arc. We also identify a likely counter-arc at a radius of 0.6 arcsec, which shows structure similar to that seen in the main arc. We model this system and find a good fit to an elliptical isothermal potential of velocity dispersion σ300\sigma \approx 300 \kms, the value expected from the fundamental plane, and some external shear. Several other galaxies in the field have colors similar to the lensing galaxy and likely make up a small group.Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ Letters. 10 pages, 3 figures.
