An Iterative Cyclic Algorithm for Designing Vaccine Distribution Networks in Low and Middle-Income Countries

The World Health Organization's Expanded Programme on Immunization (WHO-EPI) was developed to ensure that all children have access to common childhood vaccinations. Unfortunately, because of inefficient distribution networks and cost constraints, millions of children in many low and middle-income countries still go without being vaccinated. In this paper, we formulate a mathematical programming model for the design of a typical WHO-EPI network with the goal of minimizing costs while providing the opportunity for universal coverage. Since it is only possible to solve small versions of the model optimally, we describe an iterative heuristic that cycles between solving restrictions of the original problem and show that it can find very good solutions in reasonable time for larger problems that are not directly solvable.Comment: International Joint Conference on Industrial Engineering and Operations Management- ABEPRO-ADINGOR-IISE-AIM-ASEM (IJCIEOM 2019). When Politicians Talk About Politics: Identifying Political Tweets of Brazilian Congressmen

Since June 2013, when Brazil faced the largest and most significant mass protests in a generation, a political crisis is in course. In midst of this crisis, Brazilian politicians use social media to communicate with the electorate in order to retain or to grow their political capital. The problem is that many controversial topics are in course and deputies may prefer to avoid such themes in their messages. To characterize this behavior, we propose a method to accurately identify political and non-political tweets independently of the deputy who posted it and of the time it was posted. Moreover, we collected tweets of all congressmen who were active on Twitter and worked in the Brazilian parliament from October 2013 to October 2017. To evaluate our method, we used word clouds and a topic model to identify the main political and non-political latent topics in parliamentarian tweets. Both results indicate that our proposal is able to accurately distinguish political from non-political tweets. Moreover, our analyses revealed a striking fact: more than half of the messages posted by Brazilian deputies are non-political.Comment: 4 pages, 7 figures, 2 table

The hidden prosumer: consumer-citizens participation in the invisible economy of advertising

    Get PDF

What’s in a place? The contribution of strategic communication to placemaking and territorial communication

    Get PDF
Set in the field of territorial communication, the aim of this chapter is to summon the various contributions of strategic communication to placemaking and promotion, approaching them both through a mind frame path, as a multi-layered concept, and through an operational approach, as a pragmatic tool. Going through a number of examples we will reflect on several experiences to illustrate the potential of strategic communication to add value to places in different sets and scales, from building a place almost from scratch to nation branding strategies, from positioning and re-positioning objectives to building up notoriety or developing communities’ sense of belonging to a territory. We also set an evolutionary frame of the territorial communication in the light of its strategic dimension, drawing on key concepts and trends, influences and achievements. The performative value of strategic communication as a constructive tool of territorial development is discussed in addition to the communicational added value of territorial brands, namely by pointing emerging issues such as storytelling or participatory place communication. Furthermore, we summon ethical and pragmatic challenges to the debate as inspiration for future research. This work is supported by national funds through FCT – Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, I.P., under the project UIDB/00736/2020

Timelike and spacelike hadron form factors, Fock state components and light-front dynamics

    Get PDF
A unified description of spacelike and timelike hadron form factors within a light-front model was successfully applied to the pion. The model is extended to the nucleon to study the role of qqˉq \bar q pair production and of nonvalence components in the nucleon form factors. Preliminary results in the spacelike range 0Q210 (GeV/c)20 \le Q^2 \le 10 ~ (GeV/c)^2 are presented.Comment: 4 pages, espcrc1.sty. proceedings of FB XVIII (August 2006, Brazil), to be published in Nucl. Electromagnetic Hadron Form Factors and Higher Fock Components

Investigation of the spacelike and timelike electromagnetic form factors of hadrons, within a relativistic microscopical model characterized by a small set of hypothesis, could shed light on the components of hadron states beyond the valence one. Our relativistic approach has been successfully applied first to the pion and then the extension to the nucleon has been undertaken. The pion case is shortly reviewed as an illustrative example for introducing the main ingredients of our approach, and preliminary results for the nucleon in the spacelike range 10(GeV/c)2q20-10 (GeV/c)^2\le q^2 \le 0 are evaluated.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figs, espcrc1.sty included. Electromagnetic form factors of the nucleon in spacelike and timelike regions

    Get PDF
An approach for a unified description of the nucleon electromagnetic form factors in spacelike and timelike regions is presented. The main ingredients of our model are: i)i) a Mandelstam formula for the matrix elements of the nucleon electromagnetic current; ii)ii) a 3-dimensional reduction of the problem on the Light-Front performed within the so-called {\tt Propagator Pole Approximation} ({\bf PPA}), which consists in disregarding the analytical structure of the Bethe-Salpeter amplitudes and of the quark-photon vertex function in the integration over the minus components of the quark momenta; iii)iii) a dressed photon vertex in the qqˉq\bar{q} channel, where the photon is described by its spin-1, hadronic component.Comment: 8 pages, 9 figs., macro added.
