Does rotation of B stars depend on metallicity? preliminary results from GIRAFFE spectra
We show the vsini distribution of main sequence B stars in sites of various
metallicities, in the absolute magnitude range -3.34 < Mv < -2.17. These
include Galactic stars in the field measured by Abt et al. (2002), members of
the h & chi Per open clusters measured by North et al. (2004), and five fields
in the SMC and LMC measured at ESO Paranal with the FLAMES-GIRAFFE
spectrograph, within the Geneva-Lausanne guaranteed time. Following the
suggestion by Maeder et al. (1999), we do find a higher rate of rapid rotators
in the Magellanic Clouds than in the Galaxy, but the vsini distribution is the
same in the LMC and in the SMC in spite of their very different metallicities.Comment: 2 pages, 1 figure, poster presented at the ESO/Arcetri Workshop on

Specific heat of heavy fermion CePd2Si2 in high magnetic fields
We report specific heat measurements on the heavy fermion compound CePd2Si2
in magnetic fields up to 16 T and in the temperature range 1.4-16 K. A sharp
peak in the specific heat signals the antiferromagnetic transition at T_N ~ 9.3
K in zero field. The transition is found to shift to lower temperatures when a
magnetic field is applied along the crystallographic a-axis, while a field
applied parallel to the tetragonal c-axis does not affect the transition. The
magnetic contribution to the specific heat below T_N is well described by a sum
of a linear electronic term and an antiferromagnetic spin wave contribution.
Just below T_N, an additional positive curvature, especially at high fields,
arises most probably due to thermal fluctuations. The field dependence of the
coefficient of the low temperature linear term, gamma_0, extracted from the
fits shows a maximum at about 6 T, at the point where an anomaly was detected
in susceptibility measurements. The relative field dependence of both T_N and
the magnetic entropy at T_N scales as [1-(B/B_0)^2] for B // a, suggesting the
disappearance of antiferromagnetism at B_0 ~ 42 T. The expected suppression of
the antiferromagnetic transition temperature to zero makes the existence of a
magnetic quantum critical point possible.Comment: to be published in Journal of Physics: Condensed Matte
Testing the recovery of stellar rotation signals from Kepler light curves using a blind hare-and-hounds exercise
We present the results of a blind exercise to test the recoverability of
stellar rotation and differential rotation in Kepler light curves. The
simulated light curves lasted 1000 days and included activity cycles, Sun-like
butterfly patterns, differential rotation and spot evolution. The range of
rotation periods, activity levels and spot lifetime were chosen to be
representative of the Kepler data of solar like stars. Of the 1000 simulated
light curves, 770 were injected into actual quiescent Kepler light curves to
simulate Kepler noise. The test also included five 1000-day segments of the
Sun's total irradiance variations at different points in the Sun's activity
cycle.
Five teams took part in the blind exercise, plus two teams who participated
after the content of the light curves had been released. The methods used
included Lomb-Scargle periodograms and variants thereof, auto-correlation
function, and wavelet-based analyses, plus spot modelling to search for
differential rotation. The results show that the `overall' period is well
recovered for stars exhibiting low and moderate activity levels. Most teams
reported values within 10% of the true value in 70% of the cases. There was,
however, little correlation between the reported and simulated values of the
differential rotation shear, suggesting that differential rotation studies
based on full-disk light curves alone need to be treated with caution, at least
for solar-type stars.
The simulated light curves and associated parameters are available online for
the community to test their own methods.Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. Accepted, 13 April 2015. Received,
