Nexus between Oil Price and Stock Performance of Power Industry in Malaysia

    Get PDF
This paper examines the reaction of KLCI and five major power sector stocks listed on Bursa Malaysia to the changes in the world spot oil price using cointegration technique and impulse response analysis. Results indicate the existence of a long run positive relationship of world spot oil price with the stock returns of KLCI, TENAGA, TANJONG and YTLP. The impulse response analysis further shows that, in most of the cases, the oil price shock has only an impact on the short time horizon. As Malaysia is a net oil exporting country practicing oil and gas subsidization, the oil price shocks lead to the wealth transfer effect from oil importing to oil exporting countries, thus, confer a positive impact on the stock market.Stock market; Power industry; Oil price

Influence of social networking on Malaysian female secondary students: a qualitative study across three schools

    Get PDF
Social networking (SN) allows individuals to make connections with each other for both social and business purposes. The purpose of this research study is to find out the influence of SN on students from three Malaysian secondary schools by comparing their attitudes and behaviour towards SN besides finding out whether they are aware of the risks and danger involved, and how they handle them. These schools are all normal day schools and are located in three different types of school environments in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur namely: urban, suburban and rural. Focus groups interviews were conducted on these students who were asked to give their response to seven scenarios depicting negative situations involving SN such as texting, cyberbullying, and hacking and identity theft. The findings revealed that these students were not very different from those in the west in that they are aware of risks involving in SN and will stay clear of risky behaviours. However, students in these three schools handled the problems related to SN in a more direct manner compared to the elite students in Thang et al.’s (2016) study. In particular, students in School C which is a rural school seemed to be less perturbed over the negative consequences of SN compared to students in the other schools

An adaptive learning algorithm for spectrum sensing based on direction of arrival estimation in cognitive radio systems

    Get PDF
In cognitive radio systems, estimating primary user direction of arrival (DOA) measurement is one of the key issues. In order to increase the probability detection multiple sensor antennas are used and they are analysed by using subspace-based technique. In this work, we considered wideband spectrum with sub channels and here each sub channel facilitated with a sensor for the estimation of DOA. In practical spectrum sensing process interference component also encounters in the sensing process. To avoid this interference level at output of receiver, we used an adaptive learning algorithm known as Normalised Least Absolute Mean Deviation (NLAMD) algorithm. Further to achieve better performance a bias compensator function is applied in weight coefficient updating process. Using this hybrid realization, the vacant spectrum can be sensed based on DOA estimation and number of vacant locations in each channel can be identified using maximum likelihood approach. In order to test at the diversified conditions different threshold parameters 0.1, 0.5, 1 are analysed.</p

The translator’s voice through the translation of characters’ names in Bian Cheng

Bian Cheng is a representative novel of Modern Chinese Literature. One of the most translated works of Modern Chinese Literature, the novel demonstrates diversified folklore, which is fully embedded and embodied in the images presented by the names of its characters. This qualitative study compares the images of names in the original Chinese version and an English version translated by Kinkley in an attempt to reveal how translator’s voice is reflected by varying translation techniques. Newmark’s model of translation techniques and MillánVarela’s model of translator’s voice are employed for the nuanced analysis. The investigation uncovers two major translation techniques in this regard: amplification and reproduction. The former, which shows a stronger translator’s voice, is used more frequently than the latter, which displays a relatively weaker translator’s voice. The study also shows that the strong translator’s voice does not necessarily convey the corresponding and equivalent image, and the weak one fails to do so even at a less satisfactory level. It is thus concluded that complicated source culture should be paid sufficient and accurate attention through the proper articulation of translator’s voice so that the equivalent and similar images could be successfully presented and communicated through translation

Screening of selected Malaysian plants against several food borne pathogen bacteria

This study was conducted to evaluate antimicrobial properties of ethanolic extracts of the leaves of Nephelium lappaceum, Curcuma longa, Cinnamomun cassia, Durio zibethinus, Vitex trifolia, Amaranthus tricolor, Syzygium samarangense and Manihot esculenta. Antibacterial properties of the extracts were studied against fifteen strains of different gram positive and gram negative pathogenic bacteria, including Bacillus cereus, Listeria monocytogenes, Staphylococcus aureus, Vibrio para, and Escherichia coli using the agar disk diffusion method. Among the tested extracts, only Amaranthus tricolor exhibited specific inhibition of one of the tested bacteria; Bacillus cereus. Using the microdilution method, its minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) value was determined to be 20 mg/mL

Intelligent control of twin-rotor MIMO system using fuzzy inference techniques

The flight control system of helicopter is difficult to control for their performance of high-order unstable, nonlinear, and multiple-inputs multiple-outputs (MIMO) system. The behavior of two degree-of-freedom (2-DOF) helicopter has significant cross-coupling between pitch and yaw directional motions. This study presents a control system for a 2-DOF helicopter plant which more specific presented as twin-rotor MIMO system by using fuzzy logic technique. Fuzzy logic controller (FLC) is designed by using MATLAB to improve the performance of flight control system. Thus, the designed pitch and yaw controller are tuned by adjusting the range of membership function of input variable and the number of fuzzy rules used. The designed FLC are implemented and the results of the simulation are compared with LQR controller. The proposed pitch fuzzy controller shows improvement in rise time from 0.607sec to 0.458s, settling time from 7.188s to 1.866s, and percent overshoot from 38.1% to 0% over the existing pitch LQR controller. Meanwhile, the proposed yaw fuzzy controller shows improvement in rise time from 1.361s to 0.828s, settling time from 9.120sec to 2.517 s, and percent overshoot from 23.51% to 2.86% over the existing yaw LQR controller. Hence, the simulation results show that FLC has great potential than LQR controller for the flight control system

Data mining and statistical approaches in debris-flow susceptibility modelling using airborne LiDAR data

Cameron Highland is a popular tourist hub in the mountainous area of Peninsular Malaysia. Most communities in this area suffer frequent incidence of debris flow, especially during monsoon seasons. Despite the loss of lives and properties recorded annually from debris flow, most studies in the region concentrate on landslides and flood susceptibilities. In this study, debris-flow susceptibility prediction was carried out using two data mining techniques; Multivariate Adaptive Regression Splines (MARS) and Support Vector Regression (SVR) models. The existing inventory of debris-flow events (640 points) were selected for training 70% (448) and validation 30% (192). Twelve conditioning factors namely; elevation, plan-curvature, slope angle, total curvature, slope aspect, Stream Transport Index (STI), profile curvature, roughness index, Stream Catchment Area (SCA), Stream Power Index (SPI), Topographic Wetness Index (TWI) and Topographic Position Index (TPI) were selected from Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR)-derived Digital Elevation Model (DEM) data. Multi-collinearity was checked using Information Factor, Cramer's V, and Gini Index to identify the relative importance of conditioning factors. The susceptibility models were produced and categorized into five classes; not-susceptible, low, moderate, high and very-high classes. Models performances were evaluated using success and prediction rates where the area under the curve (AUC) showed a higher performance of MARS (93% and 83%) over SVR (76% and 72%). The result of this study will be important in contingency hazards and risks management plans to reduce the loss of lives and properties in the area
