Breaking the stereotype: the case of online gaming
Despite the rise of computer games as a leisure phenomenon, there has been relatively little research into this area. Furthermore, almost all of the research to date has concentrated on arcade or console games. More recently, the Internet has become a new medium in which players can play videogames. Since there is no published research in this area, some “benchmark” data on which future research can build was collected from two online gaming fan sites. Sociodemographics showed that the majority of players were male (approximately 85%). Over 60% of players were older than 19 years. The data provide clear evidence that the game clientele is very much an adult profile and suggest a different picture to the stereotypical image of an adolescent online gamer. The stereotype of the typical online player being a socially withdrawn young male with limited sex role identity appears to be misplaced

Development of a soundscape simulator tool
This paper discusses the development of an interactive soundscape simulator, enabling users to
manipulate a series of parameters to investigate if there is group correlation between factors such
as source selection, positioning and level. The basis of the simulator stems from fieldwork and
recordings carried out in London and Manchester. Through the use of an enhanced version of
soundwalking, respondents are led on a walk around an urban space focusing on the soundscape,
whilst answering questions in a semi-structured interview. The data collected is then used to
inform the ecological validity of the simulator. The laboratory based tests use simulations based
on spaces recorded in a series of urban locations, as well as an ‘idealised’ soundscape simulation,
featuring data from all recorded locations. The sound sources used are based on user highlighted
selections from all locations, based on preferences extracted from soundwalk field data.
Preliminary results show the simulator is effective in obtaining numerical data based on
subjective choices as well as, effective qualitative data which provides an insight into the
reasoning behind the respondents choices. This work forms part of the Positive Soundscape

Multiangle observations of Arctic clouds from FIRE ACE: June 3, 1998, case study
In May and June 1998 the Airborne Multiangle Imaging Spectroradiometer (AirMISR) participated in the FIRE Arctic Cloud Experiment (ACE). AirMISR is an airborne instrument for obtaining multiangle imagery similar to that of the satellite-borne MISR instrument. This paper presents a detailed analysis of the data collected on June 3, 1998. In particular, AirMISR radiance measurements are compared with measurements made by two other instruments, the Cloud Absorption Radiometer (CAR) and the MODIS airborne simulator (MAS), as well as to plane-parallel radiative transfer simulations. It is found that the AirMISR radiance measurements and albedo estimates compare favorably both with the other instruments and with the radiative transfer simulations. In addition to radiance and albedo, the multiangle AirMISR data can be used to obtain estimates of cloud top height using stereoimaging techniques. Comparison of AirMISR retrieved cloud top height (using the complete MISR-based stereoimaging approach) shows excellent agreement with the measurements from the airborne Cloud Lidar System (CLS) and ground-based millimeterwave cloud radar
