Conceptual designs for in situ analysis of Mars soil
A goal of this research is to develop conceptual designs for instrumentation to perform in situ measurements of the Martian soil in order to determine the existence and nature of any reactive chemicals. Our approach involves assessment and critical review of the Viking biology results which indicated the presence of a soil oxidant, an investigation of the possible application of standard soil science techniques to the analysis of Martian soil, and a preliminary consideration of non-standard methods that may be necessary for use in the highly oxidizing Martian soil. Based on our preliminary analysis, we have developed strawman concepts for standard soil analysis on Mars, including pH, suitable for use on a Mars rover mission. In addition, we have devised a method for the determination of the possible strong oxidants on Mars
Getting water from the water of hydration on Mars
Both Viking landers found evidence of water in small concentration in the soils of Mars. Using the gas chromatograph mass spectrometer the soil samples on Mars were heated to 500 C to release the water. This result lead researchers to believe that the water in the soil of Mars was tightly bound in a hydration state. In the laboratory several Mars analog soils and a few bench mark soils were run through a microwave to determine the amount of water released using this method. The results suggest that sufficient water can be obtained using this method to augment the activities of a human base on Mars
Paleolakes and life on early Mars
Two distinct directions have begun to elucidate key parameters in the search for extinct life on Mars. Carbonate sediments, deposited about 10,000 years ago in association with biological activity, have been sampled from the paleolake beds of Lake Vanda and Meirs in the McMurdo Dry Valleys in Antarctica. These samples are being analyzed for simple biological signatures that remain in cold and dry paleolake sediments, namely microfossils, percent carbonate, and total organic carbon. Our second initiative is the study of Colour Lake, in the Canadian Arctic, that periodically maintains a perennial ice cover. Physical measurements started this year will be used to determine one end point for ice covered lake environments and will be compared to continuous measurements from Antarctic lakes started in November 1985. Interestingly, Colour Lake also supports benthic mat communities, but the low pH precludes carbonate deposition. This research will broaden our knowledge base for what conditions are necessary for ice covered lake formation and what biological signatures will remain in paleolake deposits
A laser spectrometer and wavemeter for pulsed lasers
The design, construction, calibration, and evaluation of a pulsed laser wavemeter and spectral analyzer are described. This instrument, called the Laserscope for its oscilloscope-like display of laser spectral structure, was delivered to NASA Langley Research Center as a prototype of a laboratory instrument. The key component is a multibeam Fizeau wedge interferometer, providing high (0.2 pm) spectral resolution and a linear dispersion of spectral information, ideally suited to linear array photodiode detectors. Even operating alone, with the classic order-number ambiguity of interferometers unresolved, this optical element will provide a fast, real-time display of the spectral structure of a laser output. If precise wavelength information is also desired then additional stages must be provided to obtain a wavelength measurement within the order-number uncertainty, i.e., within the free spectral range of the Fizeau wedge interferometer. A Snyder (single-beam Fizeau) wedge is included to provide this initial wavelength measurement. Difficulties in achieving the required wide-spectrum calibration limit the usefulness of this function
Impact glasses from the less than 20-micrometer fraction of Apollo 17 soils 72501 and 78221
The chemical compositions of microscopic glasses produced during meteoroid impacts on the lunar surface provide information regarding the various fractionation processes that accompany these events. To learn more about these fractionation processes, we studied the compositions of submicrometer glass spheres from two Apollo 17 sampling sites using electron microscopy. The majority of the analyzed glasses show evidence for varying degrees of impact-induced chemical fractionation. Among these are HASP glasses (high-Al, Si-poor), which are believed to represent the refractory residuum left after the loss of volatile elements (e.g., Si, Fe, Na) from the precursor material. In addition to HASP-type glasses, we also observed a group of volatile-rich, Al-poor (VRAP) glasses that represent condensates of vaporized volatile constituents, and are complementary to the HASP compositions. High-Ti glasses were also found during the course of this study, and are documented here for the first time
Deconvolving mutational patterns of poliovirus outbreaks reveals its intrinsic fitness landscape.
Vaccination has essentially eradicated poliovirus. Yet, its mutation rate is higher than that of viruses like HIV, for which no effective vaccine exists. To investigate this, we infer a fitness model for the poliovirus viral protein 1 (vp1), which successfully predicts in vitro fitness measurements. This is achieved by first developing a probabilistic model for the prevalence of vp1 sequences that enables us to isolate and remove data that are subject to strong vaccine-derived biases. The intrinsic fitness constraints derived for vp1, a capsid protein subject to antibody responses, are compared with those of analogous HIV proteins. We find that vp1 evolution is subject to tighter constraints, limiting its ability to evade vaccine-induced immune responses. Our analysis also indicates that circulating poliovirus strains in unimmunized populations serve as a reservoir that can seed outbreaks in spatio-temporally localized sub-optimally immunized populations
A ROSAT Survey of Contact Binary Stars
Contact binary stars are common variable stars which are all believed to emit
relatively large fluxes of x-rays. In this work we combine a large new sample
of contact binary stars derived from the ROTSE-I telescope with x-ray data from
the ROSAT All-Sky Survey (RASS) to estimate the x-ray volume emissivity of
contact binary stars in the galaxy. We obtained x-ray fluxes for 140 contact
binaries from the RASS, as well as 2 additional stars observed by the
XMM-Newton observatory. From these data we confirm the emission of x-rays from
all contact binary systems, with typical luminosities of approximately 1.0 x
10^30 erg s^-1. Combining calculated luminosities with an estimated contact
binary space density, we find that contact binaries do not have strong enough
x-ray emission to account for a significant portion of the galactic x-ray

Electric-field noise from carbon-adatom diffusion on a Au(110) surface: first-principles calculations and experiments
The decoherence of trapped-ion quantum gates due to heating of their motional
modes is a fundamental science and engineering problem. This heating is
attributed to electric-field noise arising from the trap-electrode surfaces. In
this work, we investigate the source of this noise by focusing on the diffusion
of carbon-containing adsorbates on the surface of Au(110). We show by density
functional theory, based on detailed scanning probe microscopy, how the carbon
adatom diffusion on the gold surface changes the energy landscape, and how the
adatom dipole moment varies with the diffusive motion. A simple model for the
diffusion noise, which varies quadratically with the variation of the dipole
moment, qualitatively reproduces the measured noise spectrum, and the estimate
of the noise spectral density is in accord with measured values.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figure
