    The objective of this work was to determine the apparent digestibility of nutrients and energy of diets for pirarucu (Arapaima gigas) juveniles. Eight experimental diets containing four energy:protein ratios (11, 10.1, 9, 8 kcal digestible energy per gram of crude protein) and two non-protein energy sources (soybean oil and poultry fat) were tested in a 4x2 factorial scheme, in triplicates. Two hundred and forty pirarucu juveniles weighting 96.8±2.3 g were distributed in 24 cylindrical-conical fiberglass tanks, adapted for feces collection (modified Guelph system). Fish were fed twice a day to apparent satiation, with experimental diets containing 0.5% of chromium oxide as inert marker in order to determine the apparent digestibility coefficients. Diets containing an energy:protein ratio of 9 kcal digestible energy per gram of crude protein resulted in significantly lower apparent digestibility coefficient for dry matter, crude protein and non-nitrogenous extract. The highest apparent digestibility coefficients for crude fat was obtained with soybean oil.     This study used a curvilinear model to investigate the effects of different digestible energy (DE) levels on the digestible protein (DP) requirements of juvenile snapper Pagrus auratus. For each DE level (15, 18 or 21 MJ kg(-1)), DP content was increased from about 210-560 g kg(-1) in seven evenly spaced increments by formulating a summit diet (highest DP content) and a diluent diet (lowest DP content) at the desired DE level and combining the summit and diluent diets in various ratios to achieve the desired DP content. This ensured the DE level remained relatively stable. Each of the 21 dietary treatments was fed to three replicate groups of snapper twice daily to apparent satiation for 57 days. At the completion of the trial, fish were weighed and killed for chemical analysis. Results indicated that the rapid growth of snapper weighing 30-90 g was highly dependent on the ratio of DP to DE and that optimum protein deposition did not occur until snapper were offered feeds with at least 350 g DPkg(-1), irrespective of DE level. According to the fitted models, diets formulated for snapper reared at temperatures from 20-25 degrees C should contain approximately 23 g DP MJ DE-1 to promote optimal weight gain and protein deposition. Based on the feeding regime used in this study, this could be achieved with practical diets containing a DP:DE ratio of 460:20, 420:18 or 350:15

    Dietary protein and energy requirements of juvenile freshwater angelfish Exigências nutricionais de proteína e energia em juvenis de acará-bandeira

    Dietary protein and energy requirements of juvenile freshwater angelfish (Pterophyllum scalare) were evaluated. A 3 × 2 factorial design was used, with three dietary crude protein levels being tested (26, 30, and 34% of CP) combined with two digestible energy levels (3,100 and 3,300 kcal DE/kg of diet) in three replicates. Juveniles averaging 2.33 ± 0.26 g were reared in a 25L-aquarium with controlled temperature (26 ± 1ºC), biological filter and stocking density of six fish/aquarium. Fish were fed ad libitum at 09:00 a.m., 2:00 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. The following performance parameters were evaluated: final weight, final length, weight gain, feed intake, feed conversion ratio, specific growth rate, protein efficiency ratio and condition factor. Fish fed diets with 26% CP showed greater protein efficiency values when compared to those fed diets with 34% CP. Diets with 26% of CP and 3100 kcal DE/kg could meet the nutritional requirements of juvenile freshwater angelfish.<br>Avaliaram-se as exigências nutricionais de proteína e energia em juvenis de acará-bandeira (Pterophyllum scalare). Utilizou-se delineamento inteiramente casualizado, em esquema fatorial 3 × 2, com três níveis de proteína bruta (26, 30 e 34%), dois de energia digestível (3.100 e 3.300 kcal/kg de ração) e três repetições. Juvenis com peso médio de 2,33 ± 0,26 g foram distribuídos em aquários contendo 25 litros de água, temperatura controlada (26 ± 1ºC) e filtro biológico, na densidade de estocagem de seis animais por aquário. Os peixes foram alimentados à vontade às 9, 14 e 16h30. Na análise do desempenho produtivo, foram avaliados o peso final, o comprimento final, o ganho de peso, o consumo de ração, a conversão alimentar, a taxa de crescimento específico, a taxa de eficiência protéica e o fator de condição. As dietas contendo 26% PB proporcionaram maiores valores para taxa de eficiência protéica apenas em relação às dietas contendo 34% PB.     O presente trabalho foi desenvolvido com o objetivo de determinar os coeficientes de digestibilidade aparente da proteína e da energia dos principais alimentos utilizados na formulação de dietas para alevinos de pintado. Foram utilizados 600 alevinos com peso médio inicial de 9,80 ± 1,48 g e comprimento total médio de 13,00 ± 1,00 cm. Na coleta de fezes, foi utilizado o sistema de Guelph modificado. As 12 dietas-teste foram constituídas por 69,50% de uma dieta de referência, 0,50% de óxido de cromo (marcador inerte) e 30% do ingrediente estudado. Após receberem as dietas teste durante três dias, os peixes foram transferidos para os aquários de coleta (incubadoras de fibra de vidro de 80 litros de capacidade), onde as fezes foram coletadas em intervalos de meia hora. Com base nos coeficientes de digestibilidade da fração protéica, os alimentos que apresentaram maior aproveitamento para esse nutriente foram: farinha de peixe (84,14%), farelo de soja (67,10%), milho (64,18%) e farinha de vísceras de aves (61,25%). Foram observados valores razoáveis somente para a digestibilidade do conteúdo energético em metade dos ingredientes estudados; para as farinhas de peixe, milho, soja integral tostada e os farelos de soja, de trigo e de arroz, os coeficientes médios foram: 72,80; 57,39; 64,95; 61,66; 53,20 e 51,84%, respectivamente. A farinha de peixe foi o melhor ingrediente para o pintado (45,38% PD e 2790,42 kcal ED/kg), seguido do farelo de soja (30,86% PD e 2708,45 kcal ED/kg), da soja integral tostada (18,34% PD e 3121,06 kcal ED/kg), do milho (5,86% PD e 2691,53 kcal ED/kg) e do farelo de trigo (8,08% PD e 2265,13 kcal ED/kg).<br>The present work was developed in order to determine the protein and energy apparent digestibility coefficients of the principal ingredients used in the pintado juvenile diets. Six hundred juveniles with initial weight and total length means of 9.80 ± 1.48 g and 13.00 ± 1.00 cm, respectively, were used. The modified Guelph system was appraised to collect feces. All the twelve test diets were constituted of 69.50% of the reference diet, 0.50% of chromium oxide used as inert marker, and 30% of the ingredient tested. After three days of feeding with the test diets, fish were transferred to the collect aquariums, where feces were collected in intervals of 30 minutes. Using digestibility of the protein, ingredients with best results in this nutrient were fish meal (84.14%), soybean meal (67.10%), corn (64.18%) and chicken poultry by-product (61.25%). Was only observed reasonable values for energy digestibility in half of the ingredients tested; for fish meal, corn, soybean (whole, toasted) and soybean meal of wheat and rice, the mean coefficients values were: 72.80, 57.39, 64.95, 61.66, 53.20, and 51.84%, respectively. Fish meal was the best ingredient available for pintado juveniles diet formulation (45.38%DP and 2790.42 kcal DE/kg), followed by soybean meal (30.86%DP and 2708.45 kcal DE/kg), soybean (whole, toasted) (18.34%DP and 3121.06 kcal DE/kg), corn (5.86%DP and 2691.53 kcal DE/kg), and wheat meal (8.08%DP and 2265.13 kcal DE/kg)
