    General relativistic null-cone evolutions with a high-order scheme

    We present a high-order scheme for solving the full non-linear Einstein equations on characteristic null hypersurfaces using the framework established by Bondi and Sachs. This formalism allows asymptotically flat spaces to be represented on a finite, compactified grid, and is thus ideal for far-field studies of gravitational radiation. We have designed an algorithm based on 4th-order radial integration and finite differencing, and a spectral representation of angular components. The scheme can offer significantly more accuracy with relatively low computational cost compared to previous methods as a result of the higher-order discretization. Based on a newly implemented code, we show that the new numerical scheme remains stable and is convergent at the expected order of accuracy.Comment: 24 pages, 3 figure

    An integral part of spreadsheet auditing is navigation. For sufferers of Repetitive Strain Injury who need to use voice recognition technology this navigation can be highly problematic. To counter this the authors have developed an intelligent voice navigation system, iVoice, which replicates common spreadsheet auditing behaviours through simple voice commands.     Characterization traffic induced compaction in controlled traffic farming (CTF) and random traffic farming (RTF) - A multivariate approach

    A field scale experiment was carried out in Pukekohe in 2020 under an annual grass crop season to characterize the subsoil compaction in controlled traffic farming (CTF) and random traffic farming systems (RTF). Soil penetration resistance (PR) measurements were taken in each field using a cone penetrometer fitted with a 100 mm2 60° top angle cone. Multivariate analysis was performed to identify penetration resistance by depth through cluster analysis and principal component analysis (PCA). Repeated measures ANOVA was performed on the penetration data using the mixed model procedure to determine the treatment effects. In RTF, the penetrometer values increased more rapidly with depth resulting in higher values being recorded from 20cm compared to CTF. In contrast, it was greater in CTF than in RTF at the subsurface (55-60cm). The differences in PR declined beyond 55cm depth at both sites. All depths showed that differences in soil PR were most apparent in the 5-40cm depth, with significant differences between CTF and RTF (P0.05) showing that the soil layers were homogeneous in both systems beyond 40cm depth. The propagation of subsurface compaction was identified at the deeper layer (40-60cm) in CTF systems whereas it was identified from shallower depths (25-55cm) in RTF system

    Overlaps Between Autism and Language Impairment: Phenomimicry or Shared Etiology?

    Traditionally, autistic spectrum disorder (ASD) and specific language impairment (SLI) are regarded as distinct conditions with separate etiologies. Yet these disorders co-occur at above chance levels, suggesting shared etiology. Simulations, however, show that additive pleiotropic genes cannot account for observed rates of language impairment in relatives, which are higher for probands with SLI than for those with ASD + language impairment. An alternative account is in terms of ‘phenomimicry’, i.e., language impairment in comorbid cases may be a consequence of ASD risk factors, and different from that seen in SLI. However, this cannot explain why molecular genetic studies have found a common risk genotype for ASD and SLI. This paper explores whether nonadditive genetic influences could account for both family and molecular findings. A modified simulation involving G × G interactions obtained levels of comorbidity and rates of impairment in relatives more consistent with observed values. The simulations further suggest that the shape of distributions of phenotypic trait scores for different genotypes may provide evidence of whether a gene is involved in epistasis
