Rotating 5D-Kaluza-Klein Space-Times from Invariant Transformations
Using invariant transformations of the five-dimensional Kaluza-Klein (KK)
field equations, we find a series of formulae to derive axial symmetric
stationary exact solutions of the KK theory starting from static ones. The
procedure presented in this work allows to derive new exact solutions up to
very simple integrations. Among other results, we find exact rotating solutions
containing magnetic monopoles, dipoles, quadripoles, etc., coupled to scalar
and to gravitational multipole fields.Comment: 24 pages, latex, no figures. To appear in Gen. Rel. Grav., 32,

The relationship between social physique anxiety and psychosocial health in adolescents
Social physique anxiety (SPA) is a subtype of social anxiety that relates to body concerns in social contexts and has been proposed as an indicator of psychosocial adjustment in adolescents. The purpose of this study is to explore the relationship of SPA with a number psychosocial and behaviour variables in adolescents. A nationally representative sample of 3331 8th- and 10th-grade students completed a survey as a part of the Health Behaviour in School-aged Children (HBSC) study. SPA was positively associated with poor health symptoms, larger body shape and being on a diet, while it was negatively associated with physical activity and social support. Girls, those who thought were much too fat and those who were or should be on a diet had higher SPA scores than their counterparts.Hierarchical regression analysis indicate that gender (β = .20), being on a diet (β = -.27), physical activity behaviour (β = -.06), body shape (β = -.14), psychological symptoms (β = .15) and parental (β = -.07) and peer communication (β = -.07) were significant predictors of SPA. No significant interactions with gender were significant. Interventions should help adolescents deal with the pressures of achieving a socially desirable body shape and weight, including self-acceptance and seeking appropriate social support
Axisymmetric Stationary Solutions as Harmonic Maps
We present a method for generating exact solutions of Einstein equations in
vacuum using harmonic maps, when the spacetime possesses two commutating
Killing vectors. This method consists in writing the axisymmetric stationry
Einstein equations in vacuum as a harmonic map which belongs to the group
SL(2,R), and decomposing it in its harmonic "submaps". This method provides a
natural classification of the solutions in classes (Weil's class, Lewis' class
etc).Comment: 17 TeX pages, one table,( CINVESTAV- preprint 12/93
Oscillatons revisited
In this paper, we study some interesting properties of a spherically
symmetric oscillating soliton star made of a real time-dependent scalar field
which is called an oscillaton. The known final configuration of an oscillaton
consists of a stationary stage in which the scalar field and the metric
coefficients oscillate in time if the scalar potential is quadratic. The
differential equations that arise in the simplest approximation, that of
coherent scalar oscillations, are presented for a quadratic scalar potential.
This allows us to take a closer look at the interesting properties of these
oscillating objects. The leading terms of the solutions considering a quartic
and a cosh scalar potentials are worked in the so called stationary limit
procedure. This procedure reveals the form in which oscillatons and boson stars
may be related and useful information about oscillatons is obtained from the
known results of boson stars. Oscillatons could compete with boson stars as
interesting astrophysical objects, since they would be predicted by scalar
field dark matter models.Comment: 10 pages REVTeX, 10 eps figures. Updated files to match version

Beating of Friedel oscillations induced by spin-orbit interaction
By exploiting our recently derived exact formula for the Lindhard
polarization function in the presence of Bychkov-Rashba (BR) and Dresselhaus
(D) spin-orbit interaction (SOI), we show that the interplay of different SOI
mechanisms induces highly anisotropic modifications of the static dielectric
function. We find that under certain circumstances the polarization function
exhibits doubly-singular behavior, which leads to an intriguing novel
phenomenon, beating of Friedel oscillations. This effect is a general feature
of systems with BR+D SOI and should be observed in structures with a
sufficiently strong SOI.Comment: 3 figure
Solutions in Self-Dual Gravity Constructed Via Chiral Equations
The chiral model for self-dual gravity given by Husain in the context of the
chiral equations approach is discussed. A Lie algebra corresponding to a finite
dimensional subgroup of the group of symplectic diffeomorphisms is found, and
then use for expanding the Lie algebra valued connections associated with the
chiral model. The self-dual metric can be explicitly given in terms of harmonic
maps and in terms of a basis of this subalgebra.Comment: Plain Latex, 13 Pages, major revisions of style in the above proof,

Characterization of digital dispersive spectrometers by low coherence interferometry
We propose a procedure to determine the spectral response of digital dispersive spectrometers without previous knowledge of any parameter of the system. The method consists of applying the Fourier transform spectroscopy technique to each pixel of the detection plane, a CCD camera, to obtain its individual spectral response. From this simple procedure, the system-point spread function and the effect of the finite pixel width are taken into account giving rise to a response matrix that fully characterizes the spectrometer. Using the response matrix information we find the resolving power of a given spectrometer, predict in advance its response to any virtual input spectrum and improve numerically the spectrometer's resolution. We consider that the presented approach could be useful in most spectroscopic branches such as in computational spectroscopy, optical coherence tomography, hyperspectral imaging, spectral interferometry and analytical chemistry, among others.Fil: MartĂnez Matos, Ă“.. Class of Einstein--Maxwell Dilatons
Three different classes of static solutions of the Einstein--Maxwell
equations non--minimally coupled to a dilaton field are presented. The
solutions are given in general in terms of two arbitrary harmonic functions and
involve among others an arbitrary parameter which determines their
applicability as charged black holes, dilaton black holes or strings. Most of
the known solutions are contained as special cases and can be non--trivially
generalized in different ways.Comment: Published in Physical Review D, R310 (1995
