The 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games, held in Rio de Janeiro, reignited public interest and discussion around Paralympic athletes attempting to qualify for, and compete at, the Olympic Games. That Paralympians have sought to compete at the Olympic Games is, however, not new. This paper looks at the largely unrecognised and often underreported history of Paralympians competing at the Olympic Games and addresses why it is that Paralympians may wish to compete at the Olympic Games. To do this we use historical examples, but also look at the contemporary cases of 3 such athletes: Jason Smyth, Alan Fonteles Cardoso and Markus Rehm. The paper also explores whether or not with advances in medical and prosthetic technologies, as well as potentially increased income and funding, we can expect to see more Paralympians attempting to crossover and compete in the Olympic Games in the future. The methodology used is one of qualitative case studies. The research question was: "What can be learned from the media coverage of Smyth, Oliveira and Rehm’s attempts to qualify for the Olympic Games?†We identify the type of editorial (political, social, cultural, sportive, educational, economic or gossip column); whether or not pictures were used (type of approach - sportive, personal or disability) and the narrative interpretations. We argue that how newspapers choose to report on the aims of Paralympians wishing to compete in the Olympics and the level of coverage that they receive it important. This level of depth of coverage suggests both positive and negative implications for the Paralympic Games, should this trend of athletes wishing to crossover continue.
Cryptocurrencies in the Ludic Economies: The Case of Contemporary Game Cultures
Games have their own economic models. Today, players can not only collect digital currencies, but they can also use real currencies to buy virtual goods. Business models in games such as freemium and in-app purchases, for example, sustain this structure. Within this context, there is also the expansion of models outside the game realm like eSports, which happens in the form of tournaments. With this, there is constant exchange of value that emerges from games, which could also include the use of cryptocurrencies. In this chapter, we give an overview of the current state of the art of economic models within games and eSports. The current chapter aims to situate and analyse the application of these business models derived from games, e-sport and the future of ludic economies

Data-Driven Market Segmentation: The Case of Medical Tourists in Lebanon
Purpose – This research aims to obtain an in-depth understanding of medical tourists’ segments and the variations that exist within them as tourists and patients.
Design/Methodology/Approach – A data-driven segmentation approach using the two-step cluster analysis technique was applied on a sample of 212 participants visiting Lebanon for medical purposes. The research instruments combine travel motivation variables, along with socio-demographic, geographic, and behavioral characteristics.
Findings and implications – The results identified two distinct segments: “the international patients” and “the elective medical tourists.” The delineated segments have significant implications for scholars, allowing them to understand the profile of tourists and their associated motivations and behaviors better. They can guide medical tourism service providers, marketers, and destination managers in providing specific medical tourism products and services that meet the expectations of each segment.
Limitations – Limitations were experienced during the data collection process due to a lack of collaboration and prompt responses by some medical centers, as well as the political and economic contexts of Lebanon that discouraged tourism inflow. These limitations prevented the researchers from obtaining a larger sample size.
Originality – There is limited understanding of medical tourists and their diversities in medical tourism literature to date. This study addresses the gap by proposing a new segmentation method in the field of medical tourism that delineates segments by investigating medical tourists’ travel motivations in line with their characteristics
DIAMOND OF THE DESERT: THE CASE OF QATAR’S 2022 FIFA WORLD CUP
For the first time in the Arab world, the FIFA World Cup in Qatar 2022 was one of the
main drivers for promoting important infrastructural changes in the country, as well as
for transforming the image of Qatar in order to make the destination more attractive to
foreign tourists. However, despite the great wealth from its Oil & Gas reserves, several
social challenges that historically affect the country began to emerge due to greater
coverage of the international media, threatening the expectations of positive legacies left
on the country\u27s image from the event. Given this context, the case puts the reader in the
role of Ahmed Al-Nasr, then Chairman of the Qatar Supreme Committee for Delivery
and Legacy, as he faces different pressures made by major international brands
sponsoring the event who now see their image threatened by successive controversies
that the country has been involved in and they are threatening to withdraw their support
and investments. The case is indicated for undergraduate and graduate students of
courses in the area of Tourism, Sport Management, and Business interested in discussing
topics and concepts related to environmental, social, and governance (ESG)
responsibility, management of mega events, international marketing, and country
