Unequal Lives: The State of Black Women and Families in the Rural South

    Get PDF
This report aims to shed light on the most significant and persistent barriers to success, opportunity, and economic security for lower-income women and families in the rural South. It also provides an in-depth analysis of the economic security, health, and overall wellbeing of women living in nine counties across the rural South in the states of Alabama, Georgia and Mississippi.Using the most recent data available from the U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey, various city and regional agencies, and other relevant sources, the report focuses on six main issue areas that shape the lives of women and families, including poverty, income and employment; education and health; and public infrastructure and housing. The report focuses on nine counties in three states that are persistently poor as defined by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). These are counties where 20 percent or more of the population have lived in poverty for five consecutive census years

Are Solar Panels a Viable Power Source for a Green Energy Vehicle?

A solar cell powered go-kart has been built and tested. The result shows using solar energy alone cannot meet the requirement of running a regular passenger car. This is due to the limited surface area of the passenger car. This thesis also discusses the operating principles of solar panels, the physics of P type and N type semiconductors, and the formation of the PN junction, as well as the solar current. Modifications of an existing go-kart are described in detail in this thesis. Suggestions for making green vehicles are discussed as well

Quantum fluctuations in the spiral phase of the Hubbard model

We study the magnetic excitations in the spiral phase of the two--dimensional Hubbard model using a functional integral method. Spin waves are strongly renormalized and a line of near--zeros is observed in the spectrum around the spiral pitch ±Q\pm{\bf Q}. The possibility of disordered spiral states is examined by studying the one--loop corrections to the spiral order parameter. We also show that the spiral phase presents an intrinsic instability towards an inhomogeneous state (phase separation, CDW, ...) at weak doping. Though phase separation is suppressed by weak long--range Coulomb interactions, the CDW instability only disappears for sufficiently strong Coulomb interaction.Comment: Figures are NOW appended via uuencoded postscript fil

Cleft Extensions and Quotients of Twisted Quantum Doubles

Given a pair of finite groups F,GF, G and a normalized 3-cocycle ω\omega of GG, where FF acts on GG as automorphisms, we consider quasi-Hopf algebras defined as a cleft extension kωG#ckF\Bbbk^G_\omega\#_c\,\Bbbk F where cc denotes some suitable cohomological data. When FF:=F/AF\rightarrow \overline{F}:=F/A is a quotient of FF by a central subgroup AA acting trivially on GG, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a surjection of quasi-Hopf algebras and cleft extensions of the type kωG#ckFkωG#ckF\Bbbk^G_\omega\#_c\, \Bbbk F\rightarrow \Bbbk^G_\omega\#_{\overline{c}} \, \Bbbk \overline{F}. Our construction is particularly natural when F=GF=G acts on GG by conjugation, and kωG#ckG\Bbbk^G_\omega\#_c \Bbbk G is a twisted quantum double Dω(G)D^{\omega}(G). In this case, we give necessary and sufficient conditions that Rep(kωG#ckG\Bbbk^G_\omega\#_{\overline{c}} \, \Bbbk \overline{G}) is a modular tensor category.Comment: LaTex; 14 page
