Phase Transition in a Stochastic Forest Fire Model and Effects of the Definition of Neighbourhood
We present results on a stochastic forest fire model, where the influence of
the neighbour trees is treated in a more realistic way than usual and the
definition of neighbourhood can be tuned by an additional parameter.
This model exhibits a surprisingly sharp phase transition which can be
shifted by redefinition of neighbourhood. The results can also be interpreted
in terms of disease-spreading and are quite unsettling from the epidemologist's
point of view, since variation of one crucial parameter only by a few percent
can result in the change from endemic to epidemic behaviour.Comment: 23 pages, 13 figure
Cosmological Consequences of String-forming Open Inflation Models
We present a study of open inflation cosmological scenarios in which cosmic
strings form betwen the two inflationary epochs. It is shown that in these
models strings are stretched outside the horizon due to the inflationary
expansion but must necessarily re-enter the horizon before the epoch of equal
matter and radiation densities. We determine the power spectrum of cold dark
matter perturbations in these hybrid models, finding good agreement with
observations for values of and comparable
contributions from the active and passive sources to the CMB. Finally, we
briefly discuss other cosmological consequences of these models.Comment: 11 LaTeX pages with 3 eps figure
The Structure of Conserved Charges in Open Spin Chains
We study the local conserved charges in integrable spin chains of the XYZ
type with nontrivial boundary conditions. The general structure of these
charges consists of a bulk part, whose density is identical to that of a
periodic chain, and a boundary part. In contrast with the periodic case, only
charges corresponding to interactions of even number of spins exist for the
open chain. Hence, there are half as many charges in the open case as in the
closed case. For the open spin-1/2 XY chain, we derive the explicit expressions
of all the charges. For the open spin-1/2 XXX chain, several lowest order
charges are presented and a general method of obtaining the boundary terms is
indicated. In contrast with the closed case, the XXX charges cannot be
described in terms of a Catalan tree pattern.Comment: 22 pages, harvmac.tex (minor clarifications and reference corrections

A constant dark matter halo surface density in galaxies
We confirm and extend the recent finding that the central surface density
r_0*rho_0 galaxy dark matter halos, where r_0 and rho_0 are the halo core
radius and central density, is nearly constant and independent of galaxy
luminosity. Based on the co-added rotation curves of about 1000 spiral
galaxies, mass models of individual dwarf irregular and spiral galaxies of late
and early types with high-quality rotation curves and, galaxy-galaxy weak
lensing signals from a sample of spiral and elliptical galaxies, we find that
log(r_0*rho_0) = 2.15 +- 0.2, in units of log(Msol/pc^2). We also show that the
observed kinematics of Local Group dwarf spheroidal galaxies are consistent
with this value. Our results are obtained for galactic systems spanning over 14
magnitudes, belonging to different Hubble Types, and whose mass profiles have
been determined by several independent methods. In the same objects, the
approximate constancy of rho_0*r_0 is in sharp contrast to the systematical
variations, by several orders of magnitude, of galaxy properties, including
rho_0 and central stellar surface density.Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 9 pages, 4 figure

Quasiparticles and c-axis coherent hopping in high T_c superconductors
We study the problem of the low-energy quasiparticle spectrum of the extended
t-J model and analyze the coherent hopping between weakly coupled planes
described by this model. Starting with a two-band model describing the Cu-O
planes and the unoccupied bands associated to the metallic atoms located in
between the planes, we obtain effective hopping matrix elements describing the
c-axis charge transfer. A computational study of these processes shows an
anomalously large charge anisotropy for doping concentrations around and below
the optimal doping.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
Scientific Performance of the ISDC Quick Look Analysis
The INTEGRAL Science Data Centre (ISDC) routinely monitors the Near Real Time
data (NRT) from the INTEGRAL satellite. A first scientific analysis is made in
order to check for the detection of new, transient or highly variable sources
in the data. Of primary importance for this work is the Interactive Quick Look
Analysis (IQLA), which produces JEM-X and ISGRI images and monitors them for
interesting astrophysical eventsComment: 4 pages, 3 figures. Proceedings of 5th INTEGRAL Workshop: The
