    Preferences for Residential Development Attributes and Support for the Policy Process: Implications for Management and Conservation of Rural Landscapes

    The rural public may not only be concerned with the consequences of land management; residents may also have systematic preferences for policy instruments applied to management goals. Preferences for outcomes do not necessarily imply matching support for the underlying policy process. This study assesses relationships among support for elements of the policy process and preferences for management outcomes. Preferences are examined within the context of alternative proposals to manage growth and conserve landscape attributes in southern New England. Results are based on (a) stated preferences estimated from a multi-attribute contingent choice survey of rural residents, and (b) Likert-scale assessment of strength of support for land use policy tools. Findings indicate general but not universal correlation among policy support indicators and preferences for associated land use outcomes, but also confirm the suspicion that policy support and land use preference may not always coincide.Agricultural and Food Policy,

    Basque-Spanish bilingual children’s expressive and receptive grammatical abilities

    Published online: 26 Nov 2018Expressive-receptive gaps in lexical abilities have been documented for bilingual children, but few studies have investigated whether a similar gap is observed at the grammatical level. The current study assessed grammatical abilities through sentence production and comprehension tasks in both languages in 17 Basque-Spanish simultaneous bilingual 6- through 9-year-olds (both languages acquired before three years of age). The children scored lower in Basque than Spanish for sentence production, but no significant differences were found for sentence comprehension. While an expressive-receptive gap was found for both languages, this gap was larger in Basque than in Spanish. Object-verb agreement errors were especially prevalent in Basque production, possibly because verbs in Spanish only agree with the subject. These results demonstrate that expressive-receptive gaps are also observed in bilingual children’s grammatical abilities and may vary depending on the structural similarity between the two languages.The authors acknowledge financial support from the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness, through the Severo Ochoa Programme for Centres/Units of Excellence in R&D (SEV-2015-490)

    Using Decision Analysis to Improve Malaria Control Policy Making

    Malaria and other vector-borne diseases represent a significant and growing burden in many tropical countries. Successfully addressing these threats will require policies that expand access to and use of existing control methods, such as insecticide-treated bed nets (ITNs) and artemesinin combination therapies (ACTs) for malaria, while weighing the costs and benefits of alternative approaches over time. This paper argues that decision analysis provides a valuable framework for formulating such policies and combating the emergence and re-emergence of malaria and other diseases. We outline five challenges that policy makers and practitioners face in the struggle against malaria, and demonstrate how decision analysis can help to address and overcome these challenges. A prototype decision analysis framework for malaria control in Tanzania is presented, highlighting the key components that a decision support tool should include. Developing and applying such a framework can promote stronger and more effective linkages between research and policy, ultimately helping to reduce the burden of malaria and other vector-borne diseases

    Epilepsy is a disorder of the normal brain function by the existence of abnormal synchronous discharges in large groups of neurons in brain structures and it is estimated about 1% of the world’s population suffers from this disease [Tzallas et al., 2009]. It has been reported that the brainwave of Epilepsy patient mostly in sharp, spike and complex wave pattern [Tzallas et al., 2009]. In addition, Epilepsy brainwaves pattern lies in wide variety of Electroencephalogram (EEG) signals in formed of low-amplitude and polyspikes activity [Vargas et al., 2011]. Generally, this disease was examined through the brainwaves or EEG signals by clinical neurulogists. An EEG is a device to record the brainwaves in term of electrical activity from the brain. Brain patterns from wave shapes that are commonly sinusoidal and measured from peak to peak that range from 0.5 μV to 100 μV in amplitude. Moreover, the brainwaves have been categorized into four frequency bands, Beta (>13 Hz), Alpha (8-13 Hz), Theta (4-8 Hz) and Delta (0.5-4 Hz). All the frequency bands will be used to characterize the Epilepsy brainwave in terms of amplitude (voltage) and frequency [Mustafa et al., 2013]. The Epilepsy brainwaves were downloaded from http://www.vis.caltech.edu/~rodri/data.htm of Fp1 and Fp2 channels which is from rats. The brainwaves consists Epilepsy and non-Epilepsy samples. Then, the brainwaves were pre-processed to remove artefact (noise). Various methods had been introduced to detect spike-wave discharge in Epilepsy patient brainwave. Brainwave is nonstationary signal, therefore, time-frequency analysis is appropriate methods to analyse the signals[Tzallas et al., 2009, Vargas et al., 2011]. One of the most popular time-frequency analyses is ShortTime Fourier Transform (STFT). After the brainwaves were pre-processed, STFT was employed to the clean brainwaves.     Detection in coincidence of gravitational wave bursts with a network of interferometric detectors (I): Geometric acceptance and timing

    Detecting gravitational wave bursts (characterised by short durations and poorly modelled waveforms) requires to have coincidences between several interferometric detectors in order to reject non-stationary noise events. As the wave amplitude seen in a detector depends on its location with respect to the source direction and as the signal to noise ratio of these bursts are expected to be low, coincidences between antennas may not be so likely. This paper investigates this question from a statistical point of view by using a simple model of a network of detectors; it also estimates the timing precision of a detection in an interferometer which is an important issue for the reconstruction of the source location, based on time delays.Comment: low resolution figure 1 due to file size problem
