    The Hyperbolic Forest Owner

    This paper examines the implications of quasi-hyperbolic inter-temporal preferences to the Faustman model. The use of decreasing discount rates leads to dynamically inconsistent behavior. To solve this problem a two-stages optimization decision model is developed. The resulting actual cutting time will be anticipated compared to the Faustman optimal cutting time. If, alternatively, the equivalent constant rate of discount is the empirically observed discount rate, then the optimal cutting time is the same, but the present value of profits for the hyperbolic forest owner is always higher than the one resulting from the equivalent constant discount rate. All these results apply to both the single and the multiple rotation problems.Hyperbolic discounting; time preference; dynamic inconsistency; Faustman model; optimal rotation

    As doenças cardiovasculares lideram as causas de mortalidade em Portugal. Os factores de risco (FR) associados são sexo masculino, idade avançada, hipertensão arterial, tabagismo e dislipidemias, cuja sinergia amplifica o risco cardiovascular global (RCG). Realizou-se um rastreio em indivíduos da região Norte de Portugal, com o objectivo de determinar o RCG, pela tabela derivada do projecto SCORE. Verificou-se excesso de peso e pressão arterial elevada em mais de metade da amostra. Observou-se que RCG passa a alto risco acima dos 50 anos. O RCG permite estimar a interacção de FR individuais, permitindo definir estratégias interventivas, com potenciais ganhos em saúde.Cardiovascular diseases are a major cause of mortality in Portugal. Most common associated risk factors (RF) are male gender, advanced age, hypertension, smoking and dyslipidemia, whose effects’ interaction increases the global cardiovascular risk (GCR.) We conducted a screening in individuals from Northern Portugal, in order to determine the RCG through the table derived from the SCORE project. We observed overweight and high blood pressure in more than half of the sample. RCG becomes elevated above the age of 50 years.     High doses of zinc and copper alter neither cerebral metal levels nor acetylcholinesterase activity of suckling rats

    This research investigated the in vivo (ZnCl2 27 mg/kg; CuSO4 10.2 mg/kg) and in vitro effects of zinc and copper on acetylcholinesterase activity of different cerebral areas, Zn and Cu levels in cerebrum, and body weight gain of young Wistar rats. Three-day-old rats were injected (s.c.) with 5 doses (saline, Zn, Cu or Zn+Cu) for 5 consecutive days and were killed 24 h after the last dose. In the other experiment, 7-day-old rats received only 1 dose (saline, Zn or Cu) and were killed at 1, 6 or 24 h after. For the in vitro experiments, the acetylcholinesterase activity from cerebrum of 8-day-old rats was analyzed in presence of Zn or Cu (0.01 to 1 mM). Regarding the in vivo experiments, only body weight gain was decreased by 5 simultaneous administrations of Zn and Cu. The acetylcholinesterase activity from cerebrum and cerebellum and cerebral zinc and copper contents were not altered by the treatments. In vitro, Cu 0.1 and 1 mM, but not Zn, inhibited the enzyme of both cerebrum and cerebellum. The enzymatic activity from cerebrum and cerebellum homogenate was more sensitive to Cu than the enzymatic activity from S2 and S1 fractions, respectively, since less metal was necessary to inhibit the enzyme

    A Diabetes Mellitus (DM) é uma doença crónica que apresenta como principais factores de risco: obesidade, gordura abdominal e história familiar. Para avaliar o risco de desenvolver DM tipo 2 dentro de 10 anos aplicou-se uma ficha de avaliação onde se verificou que 12,5% apresentam risco sensivelmente elevado e 3,6% risco moderado. No entanto esta população já apresenta alguns factores de risco tais como IMC elevado, perímetro abdominal aumentado ou muito aumentado, baixa actividade física, alimentação deficiente em vegetais e frutas e antecedentes familiares com DM.Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a chronic disease that presents as main risk factors: obesity, abdominal fat and family history. To assess the risk of developing type 2 diabetes within 10 years was applied an evaluation and it was found that 12.5% have significantly elevated risk and 3.6% moderate risk.     Viral and Atypical Bacterial Detection in Acute Respiratory Infection in Children Under Five Years

    Acute respiratory infection (ARI) is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in children worldwide. This study aimed to determine the viral and atypical bacterial causes of different severities and clinical manifestations of ARI in preschool children from low-income families in North-East Brazil.Clinical/demographic data and nasopharyngeal aspirates (NPA) were prospectively collected from children <5 years presenting with ARI over one year to a paediatric A&E department. Disease severity was grouped according to presence of lower respiratory tract signs, need for hospital admission and need for oxygen. Clinical manifestation of ARI was based on discharge diagnosis from hospital with four conditions predominating: bronchiolitis, pneumonia, episodic viral wheeze/asthma and upper respiratory tract infection. Multiplex PCR was used to detect 17 common respiratory viral and atypical bacterial pathogens in NPA.407 children with a median age of eight months were recruited. Pathogens were detected in 85·5% samples with co-infection being particularly common (39·5%). Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV; 37%), Adenoviruses (AdV; 25%), Rhinoviruses (hRV; 19%), Bocavirus (hBoV; 19%), human Meta-pneumovirus (hMPV; 10%) and Mycoplasma pneumoniae (Mpp; 10%) were most prevalent. Detection and co-infection rates were similar in all severities and clinical manifestations of ARI apart from RSV, which was associated with more severe disease and specifically more severe cases of bronchiolitis, and Mpp, which was associated with more severe cases of pneumonia. Mpp was detected in 17% of children admitted to hospital with pneumonia.This study underlines the importance of viral and atypical bacterial pathogens in ARI in pre-school children and highlights the complex epidemiology of these pathogens in this age group. Generally, viruses and atypical bacteria were detected in all severities and clinical manifestations of ARI but RSV and Mpp were associated with more severe cases of bronchiolitis and pneumonia respectively

    The Deformation of Expanded Clay Syntactic Foams during Compression Characterized by Acoustic Emission

    The deformation and failure mechanisms in syntactic foams with different metal matrices were investigated in this study. The syntactic foams were produced by the infiltration method using lightweight expanded clay particles (LECA) as a space holder and commercially pure Al or eutectic Al-12%Si alloy for the matrices. The samples were compressed at room temperature; simultaneously, the acoustic emission (AE) response and the surface deformation were monitored and collated with the deformation curves. In the case of the Al foam, ductile behavior with long plateau stress was observed. During this plateau regime, multiple active shear bands were detected. In contrast, the AlSi12 foam exhibited more brittle deformation behavior. At the end of the quasi-linear stage, the localization of the strain started within one large shear band, accompanied by a significant stress drop. The AE analysis revealed that the deformation was mostly governed by the fracture of LECA particles and the plastic deformation of the matrix material for both types of foams. After strain localization, in the case of the AlSi12 foam, the fracture of the matrix became significant, causing the deterioration of the sample. As for the Al foam, besides the fracture of the LECA particles, the plastic deformation of the matrix played an important role in preventing the foam from falling apart

    Modulatory antimicrobial activity of Piper arboretum extracts (Zingiberaceae)

    The side effects of certain antibiotics have been a recent dilemma in the medical arena. Due this fact, the necessity of natural product discovery could provide important indications against several pharmacological targets and combat many infectious agents. Piper arboreum Aub. (Piperaceae) has been used by Brazilian traditional communities against several illnesses including rheumatism, bronchitis, sexually transmitted diseases and complaints of the urinary tract. Medicinal plants are a source of several remedies used in clinical practice to combat microbial infections. In this study, ethanol extract and fractions of Piper arboreum leaves were used to assay antimicrobial and modulatory activity. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) was determined using microdilution method of ethanol extract and fractions from the leaves of P. arboreum ranging between 8 and 1024 mgmL–1. The capacity of these natural products to enhance the activity of antibiotic and antifungal drugs was also assayed. In these tests, natural products were combined with drugs. The natural products assayed did not demonstrate any clinically relevant antimicrobial activity (MIC ³ 1024 mg mL–1). However, the modulation of antibiotic activity assay observed a synergistic activity of natural products combined with antifungal (such as nystatin and amphotericin B) and antibiotic drugs (such as amikacin, gentamicin and kanamycin). According to these results, these natural products can be an interesting alternative not only to combat infectious diseases caused by bacteria or fungi, but also to combat enhanced resistance of microorganisms to antibiotic and antifungal drugs

    Constituents and antiproliferative activity of extracts from leaves of Croton macrobothrys

    Croton macrobothrys Baill, Euphorbiaceae, is a tree from the Atlantic Forest in Southern Brazil, used in traditional medicine and popularly known as "dragon's blood" and "pau-sangue". Leaf n-hexane, dichloromethane and methanol extracts were analyzed by GC/MS and evaluated for their in vitro antiproliferative activity on cell lines 786-0 (kidney), HT-29 (colon), K562 (leukemia), NCI-ADR/RES (drug resistant ovary), NCI-H460 (lung), MCF-7 (mammary), PC-3 (prostate), OVCAR-3 (ovary), U251 (glioma) and UACC-62 (melanoma). The dicloromethane extract exhibited activity against all cell lines at the concentration 25 µg/mL, in particular on cell lines NCI-H460 (GI50 0.33 &#956;g/mL) and K5662 (GI50 0.91 &#956;g/mL). Relevant constituents in dichloromethane extract are the alkaloids corydine and salutaridine, as well as the diterpenes geranylgeraniol and crotonin-derived clerodanes
