Flavor Changing Neutral Currents involving Heavy Quarks with Four Generations

We study various FCNC involving heavy quarks in the Standard Model (SM) with a sequential fourth generation. After imposing BXsγB\to X_s\gamma, BXsl+lB\to X_sl^+l^- and ZbbˉZ\to b\bar{b} constraints, we find B(Zsbˉ+sˉb){\cal B}(Z\to s\bar{b}+\bar{s}b) can be enhanced by an order of magnitude to 10710^{-7}, while tcZ,cHt\to cZ, cH decays can reach 10610^{-6}, which are orders of magnitude higher than in SM. However, these rates are still not observable for the near future. With the era of LHC approaching, we focus on FCNC decays involving fourth generation bb^\prime and tt^\prime quarks. We calculate the rates for loop induced FCNC decays bbZ,bH,bg,bγb^\prime\to bZ, bH, bg, b\gamma, as well as t^\prime\to tZ,\tH, tg, t\gamma. If Vcb|V_{cb'}| is of order Vcb0.04|V_{cb}| \simeq 0.04, tree level bcWb^\prime\to cW decay would dominate, posing a challenge since bb-tagging is less effective. For VcbVcb|V_{cb'}| \ll |V_{cb}|, btWb'\to tW would tend to dominate, while btWb'\to t^\prime W^* could also open for heavier bb', leading to thepossibility of quadruple-WW signals via bbˉbbˉW+WW+Wb'\bar b'\to b\bar b W^+W^-W^+W^-. The FCNC bbZ,bHb'\to bZ, bH decays could still dominate if mbm_{b'} is just above 200 GeV. For the case of tt', ingeneral tbWt^\prime\to bW would be dominant, hence it behaves like a heavy top. For both bb' and tt', except for the intriguing light bb' case, FCNC decays are in the 10410210^{-4} -10^{-2} range, and are quite detectable at the LHC.For a possible future ILC, we find the associated production of FCNC e+ebsˉe^+e^-\to b\bar s, tcˉt\bar c are below sensitivity, while e+ebbˉe^+e^-\to b^\prime\bar b andttˉt^\prime\bar t can be better probed.Tevatron Run-II can still probe the lighter bb' or tt' scenario. LHC would either discover the fourth generation and measure the FCNC rates, or rule out the fourth generation conclusively.Comment: 31 pages, 15 eps figures, version to appear in JHE

    Get PDF
Field experiments were conducted in the 1995-96 soybean (Glycine max) growing season to evaluate the effects of cultural practices and host genetic resistance on the intensity of soybean stem canker, caused by Diaporthe phaseolorum f.sp. meridionalis (Dpm). Experiments were conducted in a commercial field severely infected in the previous (1994-95) season. In one study, minimum tillage (MT) and no-tillage (NT) cropping systems were investigated for their effects on disease development and on plant yields in cvs. FT- Cristalina (susceptible) and FT-Seriema (moderately resistant). Another study evaluated the effects of plant densities (8, 15, 21 and 36 plants/m) on disease development in cvs. FT-Cristalina, FT-101 (moderately resistant) and FT-104 (resistant). Disease incidence and severity were consistently lower in NT than in MT, and plant yields were increased by 23% and 14% in the NT system for the susceptible and moderately resistant cultivars, respectively, compared to the yields in the MT system. The Gompertz and Logistic models described well the disease progress curves in all situations. For both susceptible and moderately resistant cultivars, disease severity increased proportionately to the increase in plant densities. At the end of the season, 100% of the plants of cv. FT-Cristalina were infected by Dpm, at all plant densities. Disease levels on cv. FT-101 were intermediate while only very low disease levels were recorded on cv. FT-104. There was a consistent negative correlation between stem canker severity and yield. Some practices demonstrated potential for direct application in disease control, and could be combined considering their additive effects

A Simple Approach to Fourth Generation Effects in BXs+B\to X_s \ell^+ \ell^- Decay

In a scenario in which fourth generation fermions exist, we study effects of new physics on the differential decay width, forward-backward asymmetry AFBA_{\text{FB}} and integrated branching ratio for BXs+B\to X_s \ell^+ \ell^- decay with (=e,μ)(\ell=e,\mu). Prediction of the new physics on the mentioned quantities essentially differs from the Standard Model results, in certain regions of the parameter space, enhancement of new physics on the above mentioned physical quantities can yield values as large as two times of the SM predictions, whence present limits of experimental measurements of branching ratio is spanned, contraints of the new physics can be extracted. For the fourth generation CKM factor VtbVtsV_{t^\prime b}^\ast V_{t^\prime s} we use ±102\pm 10^{-2} and ±103\pm 10^{-3} ranges, take into consideration the possibility of a complex phase where it may bring sizable contributions, obtained no significant dependency on the imaginary part of the new CKM factor. For the above mentioned quantities with a new family, deviations from the SM are promising, can be used as a probe of new physics.Comment: 9 pages aps forma

    Get PDF
The objective was to obtain the indices of genetic diversity for the SNP (single nucleotide polymorphism) of the 4 intron osteopontin gene (OPN) for 434 animals (87 bulls and 347 cows) participants in the Teste de Progênie da raça girolando (Girolando Progeny Test) in Brazil. For amplification, primers used were described for the Holstein breed, and differentiation of alleles C/T SNP that was obtained by PCR-RFLP. Genotype frequencies of TT (52.53%), CT (38.71%) and CC (8.76%) and allele frequencies of T (71.9%) and C (28.1%) indicate that the population is in Hardy-Weinberg principle (HWP). Although the OPN gene locus is in HWP, the higher frequency of allele T of SNP in these animals may suggest a setting-trend of allele T in the race. No difference was observed between the group of bulls and cows (F ST = -0.018), supporting the estimate of population balance. Considering the values estimated by the F IS (0.043), it is likely that high numbers of individuals homozygous for the T allele observed in the population occur because of possible inheritance of this allele coming from the zebu breed, rather than inbreeding. Thus, to better characterize the OPN gene polymorphism, assessments in a larger number of animals must be performed, since only animals that participated in the Progeny Test were assessed
