Reconstructing the density operator by using generalized field quadratures
The Wigner function for one and two-mode quantum systems is explicitely
expressed in terms of the marginal distribution for the generic linearly
transformed quadratures. Then, also the density operator of those systems is
written in terms of the marginal distribution of these quadratures. Some
examples to apply this formalism, and a reduction to the usual optical homodyne
tomography are considered.Comment: 17 pages, Latex, accepted by Quantum and Semiclassical Optic
Invariant measures on multimode quantum Gaussian states
We derive the invariant measure on the manifold of multimode quantum Gaussian
states, induced by the Haar measure on the group of Gaussian unitary
transformations. To this end, by introducing a bipartition of the system in two
disjoint subsystems, we use a parameterization highlighting the role of
nonlocal degrees of freedom -- the symplectic eigenvalues -- which characterize
quantum entanglement across the given bipartition. A finite measure is then
obtained by imposing a physically motivated energy constraint. By averaging
over the local degrees of freedom we finally derive the invariant distribution
of the symplectic eigenvalues in some cases of particular interest for
applications in quantum optics and quantum information.Comment: 17 pages, comments are welcome. v2: presentation improved and typos

A strongly interacting gas of two-electron fermions at an orbital Feshbach resonance
We report on the experimental observation of a strongly interacting gas of
ultracold two-electron fermions with orbital degree of freedom and magnetically
tunable interactions. This realization has been enabled by the demonstration of
a novel kind of Feshbach resonance occurring in the scattering of two 173Yb
atoms in different nuclear and electronic states. The strongly interacting
regime at resonance is evidenced by the observation of anisotropic hydrodynamic
expansion of the two-orbital Fermi gas. These results pave the way towards the
realization of new quantum states of matter with strongly correlated fermions
with orbital degree of freedom.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
GIS and statistical analysis for landslide susceptibility mapping in the Daunia area, Italy
This study focuses on landslide susceptibility mapping in the Daunia area (Apulian Apennines, Italy) and achieves this by using a multivariate statistical method and data processing in a Geographical Information System (GIS). The Logistic Regression (hereafter LR) method was chosen to produce a susceptibility map over an area of 130 000 ha where small settlements are historically threatened by landslide phenomena. By means of LR analysis, the tendency to landslide occurrences was, therefore, assessed by relating a landslide inventory (dependent variable) to a series of causal factors (independent variables) which were managed in the GIS, while the statistical analyses were performed by means of the SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences) software. The LR analysis produced a reliable susceptibility map of the investigated area and the probability level of landslide occurrence was ranked in four classes. The overall performance achieved by the LR analysis was assessed by local comparison between the expected susceptibility and an independent dataset extrapolated from the landslide inventory. Of the samples classified as susceptible to landslide occurrences, 85% correspond to areas where landslide phenomena have actually occurred. In addition, the consideration of the regression coefficients provided by the analysis demonstrated that a major role is played by the "land cover" and "lithology" causal factors in determining the occurrence and distribution of landslide phenomena in the Apulian Apennines
Deformed versus undeformed cat states encoding qubit
We study the possibility of exploiting superpositions of coherent states to
encode qubit. A comparison between the use of deformed and undeformed bosonic
algebra is made in connection with the amplitude damping errors.Comment: 6 pages, 2 eps figures, to appear in J. Opt.
Beyond the Standard "Marginalizations" of Wigner Function
We discuss the problem of finding "marginal" distributions within different
tomographic approaches to quantum state measurement, and we establish
analytical connections among them.Comment: 12 pages, LaTex, no figures, to appear in Quantum and Semiclass. Op
The histone H3K4 demethylase JARID1A directly interacts with haematopoietic transcription factor GATA1 in erythroid cells through its second PHD domain
Chromatin remodelling and transcription factors play important roles in lineage commitment and development through control of gene expression. Activation of selected lineage-specific genes and repression of alternative lineage-affiliated genes results in tightly regulated cell differentiation transcriptional programmes. However, the complex functional and physical interplay between transcription factors and chromatin modifying enzymes remains elusive. Recent evidence has implicated histone demethylases in normal haematopoietic differentiation as well as in malignant haematopoiesis. Here we report an interaction between H3K4 demethylase JARID1A and the haematopoietic-specific master transcription proteins SCL and GATA1 in red blood cells. Specifically, we observe a direct physical contact between GATA1 and the second PHD domain of JARID1A. This interaction has potential implications for normal and malignant haematopoiesis
Snow satellite images for calibration of snow dynamic in a continuous distributed hydrological model
International audienceThe snow accumulation and melt processes are well known to play an important role on the river flow regime, in particular this is enhanced for basin with complex topography where the snow dynamic is strongly affected by hillslope exposition. This paper presents a simplified numerical model for snow dynamic simulation based on air temperature thresholds that rule the snow melt and accumulation processes implemented into a continuous distributed hydrological model for hydrograph simulations at basin scale. The possibility to calibrate these temperature thresholds from snow cover maps derived from NOAA satellite images is discussed. Snow covered pixels are classified according to a procedure based on aspect and elevation of each pixel, that allows to identify snow covered pixels also in shadowed areas. Snow model performance is proved at local and basin scale. The former shows a good agreement between modelled snow dynamic and observed snow height data at the Antrona station in the Toce basin; the latter shows agreement between observed and simulated hydrographs for the three gauge stations of Toce, Ticino and Maggia rivers
