An overview of the supply chain management of Malaysian vegetable and fruit industries focusing on channel of distribution

    Get PDF
The paper delineates three fundamental characteristics of the local supply chain for vegetables and fruits in Malaysia where the marketing channels are still traditionally driven from the wholesalers’ perspectives. Produce is procured from farmers by wholesalers and then channelled to the hypermarkets and retailers. Most of the produce attributes are lacking in terms of quality, packaging, Good Agriculture Practices (GAP), traceability and safety characteristics. Most producers do not grade or pack their products and most of the production and marketing practices in the current supply chain are still traditional practices with only minor adoption of modern marketing practices being applied. This study indicates that production contract is not being practised. However, transactions on marketing or supply contracts do exist in the supply chain system. However, only a small number of farmers are involved in marketing contracts. The current system still relies on the old system of procurement and supply practices. The current supply chain management lacks attributes, such as the issues of consumer packaging, branding, and the promotion of organic farming towards sustainable agriculture. Thus, the involvement of government agencies and private sectors is essential in the promotion of production contracts to farmers

Effect of Water and [Emim][OAc] as Plasticizer on Gelatinization of Starch

AbstractAs the depletion of petroleum source and environmental concerns been arises, a new polymer defined as biodegradable material had been extensively study in order to replace the synthetic one. Starch is one of natural materials that been used for producing biodegradable materials. Through gelatinization process, native starches were changed into thermoplastic starch (TPS) in the presence of water and [Emim][OAc] as plasticizers at high temperature (90˚C). The structure and interaction of starch/water/[Emim][OAc] have been study using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). DSC analysis is used to analyse the onset temperature (To), the peak temperature (Tp), the melting temperature (Tm) and melting enthalpy (ΔH) of samples over a wide range of starch/water/[Emim][OAc] contents. Gelatinization peak shift to higher temperature as the value of [Emim][OAc] is increasing. The values of To, Tp and ΔH are influenced by the hydrogen bonding capacity of plasticizers. Thus, showed that composition of water/[Emim][OAc] is effectively influence the gelatinization process

    Get PDF
This study was aimed to develop a fast technique of Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy for detection and quantification of lard adulteration in some vegetable oils, namely canola oil (Ca‒O), corn oil (CO), extra virgin olive oil (EVOO), soybean oil (SO), and sunflower oil (SFO). The FTIR spectra associated with Ca‒O, CO, EVOO, SO, and SFO as well as their blends with lard were scanned, interpreted, and identified. The chemometrics of partial least square (PLS) and discriminant analysis (DA) at fingerprint regions of 1500–1000 cm−1 was used for quantifying and classifying of lard in the mixture with vegetable oils, respectively. PLS calibration can be successfully used for quantification of lard in the mixture with vegetable oils, either using normal spectra or its first derivatives. Furthermore, DA based on Mahalanobis distance can classify lard in vegetable oils.

    Get PDF
FTIR spectroscopy in combination with multivariate calibrations, i.e. partial least square (PLS) and principle component regression (PCR) was developed for quantitative analysis of cod liver oil (CLO) in binary mixture with corn oil (CO). The spectra of CLO, CO and their blends with certain concentrations were scanned using horizontal attenuated total reflectance (HATR) accessory at mid infrared (MIR) region of 4,000 – 650 cm-1. The optimal spectral treatments selected for calibration models were based on its ability to provide the highest values of coefficient of determination (R2 ) and the lowest values of root mean error of calibration (RMSEC). PLS was slightly well suited for quantitative analysis of CLO compared to PCR. FTIR spectroscopy in combination with multivariate calibration offers rapid, no excessive chemical reagent, and easy in operational to be applied for determination of CLO in binary mixture with other oils

Patients who self-discharge against medical advice (DAMA) are susceptible to life-threatening consequences. By understanding the factors associated with DAMA, healthcare centres can build strategies to assist patients to receive optimal medical care and prevent unfavourable outcome. The objective of this study was to determine the factors associated with DAMA from the Emergency Department (ED) of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Medical Centre (UKMMC). This was a prospective unmatched case control study conducted over a 4-month period. For every DAMA episode, two patients who were admitted on the same day were randomly selected as control. Following patient consent, data was collected using a standardized questionnaire. Patients were contacted by the investigator for information regarding hospitalization within two weeks of DAMA. Ninety three patients were recruited; 31 DAMA patients and 62 admitted patients. Payment method was significantly associated with DAMA (OR 3.17 95% CI 1.29-7.98; p=0.01). The likelihood of self-paying patients to take DAMA was three times higher than those who had a guarantor letter from their employer or insurance provider. Other factors which influence DAMA were family obligations (OR 4.08 95% CI 1.09-15.26; p = 0.03) and work problems (OR 3.83 95% CI 1.13-12.94; p=0.03). A total of 19.4% of DAMA patients left following symptomatic pain relief. A total of 80.6% DAMA patients were admitted to hospital within two weeks of the DAMA episode. Payment method significantly influences DAMA. Payment planning, social welfare services, non-governmental organization funds and the introduction of a national health policy scheme may aid hospital payment, alleviate financial limitation of patients and reduce DAMA episodes

This study was conducted to evaluate the oxidative stability of virgin coconut oil (VCO) during oven test. VCO with and without antioxidants were subjected to oven test at 63°C over a 40 day-storage. The chemical parameters namely peroxide value (PV) and specific absorptivity of conjugated dienes (CDs) and conjugated trienes (CTs) were used to asses VCO stability. VCO samples treated with the mixture of butylated hydroxyanisole and butylated hydroxytoluene (BHA/BHT of 200 mg/kg) and citric acid (CA, 100 mg/kg) have lower PVs than control (VCO without antioxidants) and other treatments. The specific absorbtivities of CDs and CTs of VCO were also decreased due to the addition of antioxidants. In addition, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy was used to monitor the peak changes during the thermal oxidation. The prominent peak change observed during thermal oxidation of VCO was at frequency 1739 cm-1 which corresponded to the carbonylic compounds (esters, aldehydes, ketones, lactones) resulted from the hydroperoxide decompositions during oven tes
