Intrinsic versus super-rough anomalous scaling in spontaneous imbibition

    Get PDF
We study spontaneous imbibition using a phase field model in a two dimensional system with a dichotomic quenched noise. By imposing a constant pressure μa<0\mu_{a}<0 at the origin, we study the case when the interface advances at low velocities, obtaining the scaling exponents z=3.0±0.1z=3.0\pm 0.1, α=1.50±0.02\alpha=1.50\pm 0.02 and αloc=0.95±0.03\alpha_{loc}= 0.95\pm 0.03 within the intrinsic anomalous scaling scenario. These results are in quite good agreement with experimental data recently published. Likewise, when we increase the interface velocity, the resulting scaling exponents are z=4.0±0.1z=4.0 \pm 0.1, α=1.25±0.02\alpha=1.25\pm 0.02 and αloc=0.95±0.03\alpha_{loc}= 0.95\pm 0.03. Moreover, we observe that the local properties of the interface change from a super-rough to an intrinsic anomalous description when the contrast between the two values of the dichotomic noise is increased. From a linearized interface equation we can compute analytically the global scaling exponents which are comparable to the numerical results, introducing some properties of the quenched noise.Comment: Accepted for publication in Physical Review

CCD Photometry of Delta Scuti stars 7 Aql and 8 Aql

As a continuation of the study of the Delta Scuti stars 7 Aql and 8 Aql; new CCD photometric data were acquired in 2007. We present a period analysis on these data that confirm the dominant modes detected in each star in the framework of the STEPHI XII campaign in 2003.Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures, 2 tables; Accepted for publication in Communications in Asteroseismology, Vol 153, 200

Studies of the photoionization cross sections of CH_4

    Get PDF
We present cross sections and asymmetry parameters for photoionization of the 1t_2 orbital of CH_4 using static‐exchange continuum orbitals of CH^+_4 to represent the photoelectron wave function. The calculations are done in the fixed‐nuclei approximation at a single internuclear geometry. To approximate the near‐threshold behavior of these cross sections, we assumed that the photoelectron spectrum is a composite of three electronic bands associated with the Jahn–Teller components of the distorted ion. The resulting cross sections reproduce the sharp rise seen at threshold in the experimental data and are in good agreement with experiment at higher energy. The agreement between the calculated and measured photoelectron asymmetry parameters is, however, less satisfactory

Sidebranching induced by external noise in solutal dendritic growth

    Get PDF
We have studied sidebranching induced by fluctuations in dendritic growth. The amplitude of sidebranching induced by internal (equilibrium) concentration fluctuations in the case of solidification with solutal diffusion is computed. This amplitude turns out to be significantly smaller than values reported in previous experiments. The effects of other possible sources of fluctuations (of an external origin)are examined by introducing non-conserved noise in a phase-field model. This reproduces the characteristics of sidebranching found in experiments. Results also show that sidebranching induced by external noise is qualitatively similar to that of internal noise, and it is only distinguished by its amplitude.Comment: 13 pages, 5 figure

The N-Vortex Problem on a Symmetric Ellipsoid: A Perturbation Approach

We consider the N-vortex problem on a ellipsoid of revolution. Applying standard techniques of classical perturbation theory we construct a sequence of conformal transformations from the ellipsoid into the complex plane. Using these transformations the equations of motion for the N-vortex problem on the ellipsoid are written as a formal series on the eccentricity of the ellipsoid's generating ellipse. First order equations are obtained explicitly. We show numerically that the truncated first order system for the three-vortices system on the symmetric ellipsoid is non-integrable.Comment: 14 pages, 1 figur
