Darth Fader: Using wavelets to obtain accurate redshifts of spectra at very low signal-to-noise
We present the DARTH FADER algorithm, a new wavelet-based method for
estimating redshifts of galaxy spectra in spectral surveys that is particularly
adept in the very low SNR regime. We use a standard cross-correlation method to
estimate the redshifts of galaxies, using a template set built using a PCA
analysis on a set of simulated, noise-free spectra. Darth Fader employs wavelet
filtering to both estimate the continuum & to extract prominent line features
in each galaxy spectrum. A simple selection criterion based on the number of
features present in the spectrum is then used to clean the catalogue: galaxies
with fewer than six total features are removed as we are unlikely to obtain a
reliable redshift estimate. Applying our wavelet-based cleaning algorithm to a
simulated testing set, we successfully build a clean catalogue including
extremely low signal-to-noise data (SNR=2.0), for which we are able to obtain a
5.1% catastrophic failure rate in the redshift estimates (compared with 34.5%
prior to cleaning). We also show that for a catalogue with uniformly mixed SNRs
between 1.0 & 20.0, with realistic pixel-dependent noise, it is possible to
obtain redshifts with a catastrophic failure rate of 3.3% after cleaning (as
compared to 22.7% before cleaning). Whilst we do not test this algorithm
exhaustively on real data, we present a proof of concept of the applicability
of this method to real data, showing that the wavelet filtering techniques
perform well when applied to some typical spectra from the SDSS archive. The
Darth Fader algorithm provides a robust method for extracting spectral features
from very noisy spectra. The resulting clean catalogue gives an extremely low
rate of catastrophic failures, even when the spectra have a very low SNR. For
very large sky surveys, this technique may offer a significant boost in the
number of faint galaxies with accurately determined redshifts.Comment: 22 pages, 15 figures. Accepted for publication in Astronomy &

THE INFLUENCE OF PRECEDING MOVEMENTS IN THE PERFORMANCE OF BALLET JUMPS
The purpose of this study was to gain more insights about the individual technique used in the performance of ballet jumps and determine the influence of preceding movements in the efficiency of its performance. Seven female ballet students participate voluntarily in the study. Ground reaction forces were measured using a Bertec force plate. A triaxial accelerometer was placed at the low back of the subject on the skin surface, approximately at the height of the centre of mass. Results suggest that generally, a positive influence from preceding movements was observed in the performance of the selected jumps. Jumps preceded by only one movement, show a tendency to an increase in the reached height. Due to an immature technique of performance, our ballet students did not use appropriately preceding movements to potentiate the subsequent jumps

Ohmic heating treatment of fruit puree
Ohmic heating is an alternative pasteurization
process and is growing interest in industry. Understanding the influence of ohmic heating on the sensorial and microbiological quality of foods is a pertinent matter. This study concerns with the pasteurization
effects of a pilot scale continuous ohmic
heater on a strawberry puree containing fruit particles on relevant quality parameters of the product.
The impact of pasteurization temperature (85 ºC, 90 ºC,
95 ºC) on the microbiological load, size distribution of strawberry particles (1 g), texture and microbial stability was studied. All treatments destroyed yeasts and
moulds to values below 10 CFU/mL. The strawberry particles size distribution shows that the average size of particles decreased with increasing treatment temperature. A texture reduction, measured in terms of the force applied on a 5-blade Kramer
cell, was observed when strawberry particles were collected before and after the thermal treatment: 20 %, 23 % and 25 % reduction at 85 ºC, 90 ºC and 95 ºC, respectively. The reduction for a scrapped surface heat-exchanger treatment at 95 ºC was of 31 %. In conclusion, ohmic heating reduces the product microbiological load and for parameters such as texture and size distribution of the strawberry particles the cooking effects are reduced when
compared with a scrapped surface heat-exchanger treatment.
Crop-Livestock-Forest Integration System. 2. Identifying and Establishing Forages in Integrated Crop-Livestock. ABSTRACT: There are arrangements and methods to establishing pasture in croplivestock integration systems (CLI) that may increase animal production and change cropping environment, making it more favorable to grain production. Cultivation of forages, either alone or mixed with other crops, has been improved, but this is a new subject to many farmers and technicians who have difficulty in identifying forage species and cultivars. Therefore, it is hard to assess forage establishment and appropriate management. There are some morphological characteristics related to leaves, to waxy and pubescence and to type of inflorescence which make easy to identify different cultivars in the field. Pearl millet, sorghum, Panicum maximum and Brachiaria spp. are some commercial forages which are suitable to CLI systems. Some forages are easily established and are more productive during dry season; additionally, they are burned down with a lower dose of herbicide and die more quickly. So, the time between the desiccation and the establishment of a new crop in succession is shorter.bitstream/item/60551/1/DOC.111.2011.CPAO.pd
