    La invariación acústica en las nasales del castellano

    El objetivo de este estudio consiste en analizar el papel que desempeñan el murmullo y las transiciones vocálicas en la percepción de las consonantes nasales castellanas a partir de secuencias de habla natural. Los estímulos incluidos en el test de percepción representan diferentes ventanas (cinco en total) de distinta duración y composición a partir de la deternúnación del punto de discontinuidad de onda en el oscilograma entre la consonante y la vocal que integran cada secuencia. También se ha estudiado la percepción del timbre vocálico en cada uno de los estímulos del test. Dado el carácter especial de la nasal palatal, en los resultados obtenidos hemos realizado un segundo experimento para intentar determinar si [ JI ] parece comportarse como un segmento simple o como un segmento complejo. En suma, la condición mixta, salvo en la nasal palatal, es la que proporciona mejores resultados, con lo cual podemos pensar que los índices invariantes hay que buscarlos probablemente en el seno de la silaba antes que en los elementos aislados

    Cu(II) 4-phenoxybenzoate dimers and monomer coordinated by pyridines: synthesis and crystal structures

    The complexes [Cu(PhOBz)2(dPy)]2 (PhOBz = 4-phenoxybenzoate; dPy = pyridine (1), 3-phenylpyridine (2), 4-benzylpyridine (3) and 4-phenylpyridine (4) and the complex [Cu(PhOBz)2(4-Phpy)2(H2O)] (5) were prepared and fully characterized. X-ray crystal structures of the five complexes have been determined. Complexes 1-4 consist of binuclear units where both Cu(II) are linked by four syn-syn carboxylate bridges, showing a paddle-wheel unit. The compound 5 is mononuclear and the metal center is coordinated to two PhOBz in monodentate form, two 4-Phpy ligands and one H2O molecule with slightly distorted square pyramidal geometry. Finally, the magnetic properties of compounds 3 and 5 have also been studied, confirming the different strength interactions between Cu(II) cations

    Improving Reading Skills Using a Computerized Phonological Training Program in Early Readers with Reading Difficulties

    In the last years, there has been a big effort to identify risk factors for reading difficulties and to develop new methodologies to help struggling readers. It has been shown that early intervention is more successful than late intervention, and that intensive training programs can benefit children with reading difficulties. The aim of our study is to investigate the effectiveness of an intensive computerized phonological training program designed to improve reading performance in a sample of children with reading difficulties at the early stages of their reading learning process. Thirty-two children with reading difficulties were randomly assigned to one of the two intervention groups: RDIR (children with reading difficulties following a computerized intensive remediation strategy) (n = 20) (7.01 +/- 0.69 years), focused on training phonemic awareness, decoding and reading fluency through the computational training; and RDOR (children with reading difficulties following an ordinary remediation strategy) (n = 12) (6.92 +/- 0.82 years), which consisted of a reinforcement of reading with a traditional training approach at school. Normal readers (NR) were assigned to the control group (n = 24) (7.32 +/- 0.66 years). Our results indicate that both the RDIR and RDOR groups showed an increased reading performance after the intervention. However, children in the RDIR group showed a stronger benefit than the children in the RDOR group, whose improvement was weaker. The control group did not show significant changes in reading performance during the same period. In conclusion, results suggest that intensive early intervention based on phonics training is an effective strategy to remediate reading difficulties, and that it can be used at school as the first approach to tackle such difficulties

    A 2D rhomboidal system of manganese(II) [Mn(3-MeC6H4COO)2(H2O)2]n with spin canting: rationalization of the magnetic exchange

    The crystal structure of Mn(II) carboxylate with 3-methylbenzoate as a bridging ligand [Mn(3-MeC6H4COO)2(H2O)2]n shows a rhomboidal layer, where each pair of neighbor Mn(II) ions are bridged through only one carboxylate group with a syn-anti conformation. The magnetic exchange between neighbor ions is weakly antiferromagnetic (J = −0.52 cm−1, g = 2.04), and at low temperature the system shows spin canting with TB = 3.8 K. Computational studies, based on periodic calculations of the energies of the significant spin states on the magnetic cell and some higher supercells, corroborate the weak AF interaction between the adjacent Mn(II) ions and preclude the negligible effect of frustration caused by very weak interactions between the non-adjacent ions in the magnetic response of the system. The results provide compelling evidence that the observed spin canting is due to the local coordination geometry of the manganese ions leading to two antiferromagnetically coupled subnets with different axial vectors

    Tissue Distribution of Oleocanthal and Its Metabolites after Oral Ingestion in Rats

    Claims for the potential health benefits of oleocanthal (OLC), a dietary phenolic compound found in olive oil, are based mainly on in vitro studies. Little is known about the tissue availability of OLC, which is rapidly metabolized after ingestion. In this study, the distribution of OLC and its metabolites in rat plasma and tissues (stomach, intestine, liver, kidney, spleen, lungs, heart, brain, thyroid and skin) at 1, 2 and 4.5 h after the acute intake of a refined olive oil containing 0.3 mg/mL of OLC was examined by LC-ESI-LTQ-Orbitrap-MS. OLC was only detected in the stomach and intestine samples. Moreover, at 2 and 4.5 h, the concentration in the stomach decreased by 36% and 74%, respectively, and in the intestine by 16% and 33%, respectively. Ten OLC metabolites arising from phase I and phase II reactions were identified. The metabolites were widely distributed in rat tissues, and the most important metabolizing organs were the small intestine and liver. The two main circulating metabolites were the conjugates OLC + OH + CH3 and OLC + H2O + glucuronic acid, which may significantly contribute to the beneficial health effects associated with the regular consumption of extra virgin olive oil. However, more studies are necessary to determine the concentrations and molecular structures of OLC metabolites in human plasma and tissues when consumed with the presence of other phenolic compunds present in EVOO.     AutoWS-Bench-101: Benchmarking Automated Weak Supervision with 100 Labels

    Weak supervision (WS) is a powerful method to build labeled datasets for training supervised models in the face of little-to-no labeled data. It replaces hand-labeling data with aggregating multiple noisy-but-cheap label estimates expressed by labeling functions (LFs). While it has been used successfully in many domains, weak supervision's application scope is limited by the difficulty of constructing labeling functions for domains with complex or high-dimensional features. To address this, a handful of methods have proposed automating the LF design process using a small set of ground truth labels. In this work, we introduce AutoWS-Bench-101: a framework for evaluating automated WS (AutoWS) techniques in challenging WS settings -- a set of diverse application domains on which it has been previously difficult or impossible to apply traditional WS techniques. While AutoWS is a promising direction toward expanding the application-scope of WS, the emergence of powerful methods such as zero-shot foundation models reveals the need to understand how AutoWS techniques compare or cooperate with modern zero-shot or few-shot learners. This informs the central question of AutoWS-Bench-101: given an initial set of 100 labels for each task, we ask whether a practitioner should use an AutoWS method to generate additional labels or use some simpler baseline, such as zero-shot predictions from a foundation model or supervised learning. We observe that in many settings, it is necessary for AutoWS methods to incorporate signal from foundation models if they are to outperform simple few-shot baselines, and AutoWS-Bench-101 promotes future research in this direction.     Cortical thickness and behavior abnormalities in children born preterm

    Abstract Aim To identify long-term effects of preterm birth and of periventricular leukomalacia (PVL) on cortical thickness (CTh). To study the relationship between CTh and cognitive-behavioral abnormalities. Methods We performed brain magnetic resonance imaging on 22 preterm children with PVL, 14 preterm children with no evidence of PVL and 22 full-term peers. T1-weighted images were analyzed with FreeSurfer software. All participants underwent cognitive and behavioral assessments by means of the Wechsler Intelligence Scales for Children-Fourth Edition (WISC-IV) and the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL). Results We did not find global CTh differences between the groups. However, a thinner cortex was found in left postcentral, supramarginal, and caudal middle rostral gyri in preterm children with no evidence of PVL than in the full-term controls, while PVL preterm children showed thicker cortex in right pericalcarine and left rostral middle frontal areas than in preterm children with no evidence of PVL. In the PVL group, internalizing and externalizing scores correlated mainly with CTh in frontal areas. Attentional scores were found to be higher in PVL and correlated with CTh increments in right frontal areas. Interpretation The preterm group with no evidence of PVL, when compared with full-term children, showed evidence of a different pattern of regional thinning in the cortical gray matter. In turn, PVL preterm children exhibited atypical increases in CTh that may underlie their prevalent behavioral problems
