Old Metal-rich Globular Cluster Populations: Peak Color and Peak Metallicity Trends with Mass of Host Spheroids
We address the problem of the factors contributing to a peak color trend of
old metal-rich globular cluster (MRGC) populations with mass of their hosts,
early-type galaxies and spheroidal subsystems of spiral ones (spheroids). The
color-mass trend is often converted to a metallicity-mass trend under the
assumption that age effects are small or negligible. While direct estimates of
the ages of MRGC populations neither can rule out nor reliably support the
populations' age trend, key data on timing of the formation of spheroids and
other indirect evidence imply it in the sense: the more massive spheroid the
older on average its MRGC population. We show that the contribution of an
allowable age trend of the MRGC populations to their peak color trend can
achieve up to ~50 % or so. In this event the comparable value of the color
trend, ~30 %, is due to alpha-element ratio systematic variations of the order
of Delta[alpha/Fe] ~ 0.1 to 0.2 dex because of a correlation between the
[alpha/Fe] ratios and age. Hence a systematic variation of exactly [Fe/H]
ratios may turn out to be less significant among the contributors, and its
range many times lower, i.e. of the order of Delta[Fe/H] ~ 0.1 or even none,

Neutral competition of stem cells is skewed by proliferative changes downstream of Hh and Hpo.
Neutral competition, an emerging feature of stem cell homeostasis, posits that individual stem cells can be lost and replaced by their neighbors stochastically, resulting in chance dominance of a clone at the niche. A single stem cell with an oncogenic mutation could bias this process and clonally spread the mutation throughout the stem cell pool. The Drosophila testis provides an ideal system for testing this model. The niche supports two stem cell populations that compete for niche occupancy. Here, we show that cyst stem cells (CySCs) conform to the paradigm of neutral competition and that clonal deregulation of either the Hedgehog (Hh) or Hippo (Hpo) pathway allows a single CySC to colonize the niche. We find that the driving force behind such behavior is accelerated proliferation. Our results demonstrate that a single stem cell colonizes its niche through oncogenic mutation by co-opting an underlying homeostatic process.This is the final version. Risk factors for delay in symptomatic presentation: a survey of cancer patients
Background: Delay in symptomatic presentation leading to advanced stage at diagnosis may contribute to poor cancer survival. To inform public health approaches to promoting early symptomatic presentation, we aimed to identify risk factors for delay in presentation across several cancers.
Methods: We surveyed 2371 patients with 15 cancers about nature and duration of symptoms using a postal questionnaire. We calculated relative risks for delay in presentation (time from symptom onset to first presentation >3 months) by cancer, symptoms leading to diagnosis and reasons for putting off going to the doctor, controlling for age, sex and deprivation group.
Results: Among 1999 cancer patients reporting symptoms, 21% delayed presentation for >3 months. Delay was associated with greater socioeconomic deprivation but not age or sex. Patients with prostate (44%) and rectal cancer (37%) were most likely to delay and patients with breast cancer least likely to delay (8%). Urinary difficulties, change of bowel habit, systemic symptoms (fatigue, weight loss and loss of appetite) and skin symptoms were all common and associated with delay. Overall, patients with bleeding symptoms were no more likely to delay presentation than patients who did not have bleeding symptoms. However, within the group of patients with bleeding symptoms, there were significant differences in risk of delay by source of bleeding: 35% of patients with rectal bleeding delayed presentation, but only 9% of patients with urinary bleeding. A lump was a common symptom but not associated with delay in presentation. Twenty-eight percent had not recognised their symptoms as serious and this was associated with a doubling in risk of delay. Embarrassment, worry about what the doctor might find, being too busy to go to the doctor and worry about wasting the doctor’s time were also strong risk factors for delay, but were much less commonly reported (<6%).
Interpretation: Approaches to promote early presentation should aim to increase awareness of the significance of cancer symptoms and should be designed to work for people of the lowest socioeconomic status. In particular, awareness that rectal bleeding is a possible symptom of cancer should be raised
The M33 Globular Cluster System with PAndAS Data: The Last Outer Halo Cluster?
We use CFHT/MegaCam data to search for outer halo star clusters in M33 as
part of the Pan-Andromeda Archaeological Survey (PAndAS). This work extends
previous studies out to a projected radius of 50 kpc and covers over 40 square
degrees. We find only one new unambiguous star cluster in addition to the five
previously known in the M33 outer halo (10 kpc <= r <= 50 kpc). Although we
identify 2440 cluster candidates of various degrees of confidence from our
objective image search procedure, almost all of these are likely background
contaminants, mostly faint unresolved galaxies. We measure the luminosity,
color and structural parameters of the new cluster in addition to the five
previously-known outer halo clusters. At a projected radius of 22 kpc, the new
cluster is slightly smaller, fainter and redder than all but one of the other
outer halo clusters, and has g' ~ 19.9, (g'-i') ~ 0.6, concentration parameter
c ~ 1.0, a core radius r_c ~ 3.5 pc, and a half-light radius r_h ~ 5.5 pc. For
M33 to have so few outer halo clusters compared to M31 suggests either tidal
stripping of M33's outer halo clusters by M31, or a very different, much calmer

Recognition of cancer warning signs and anticipated time to help-seeking in a population sample of adults in the UK
Background: Not recognising a symptom as suspicious is a common reason given by cancer patients for delayed help-seeking; but inevitably this is retrospective. We therefore investigated associations between recognition of warning signs for breast, colorectal and lung cancer and anticipated time to help-seeking for symptoms of each cancer.
Methods: Computer-assisted telephone interviews were conducted with a population-representative sample (N=6965) of UK adults age greater than or equal to50 years, using the Awareness and Beliefs about Cancer scale. Anticipated time to help-seeking for persistent cough, rectal bleeding and breast changes was categorised as >2 vs less than or equal to2 weeks. Recognition of persistent cough, unexplained bleeding and unexplained lump as cancer warning signs was assessed (yes/no). Associations between recognition and help-seeking were examined for each symptom controlling for demographics and perceived ease of health-care access.
Results: For each symptom, the odds of waiting for >2 weeks were significantly increased in those who did not recognise the related warning sign: breast changes: OR=2.45, 95% CI 1.47–4.08; rectal bleeding: OR=1.77, 1.36–2.30; persistent cough: OR=1.30, 1.17–1.46, independent of demographics and health-care access.
Conclusion: Recognition of warning signs was associated with anticipating faster help-seeking for potential symptoms of cancer. Strategies to improve recognition are likely to facilitate earlier diagnosis
Business cycles, international trade and capital flows: Evidence from Latin America
This paper adopts a flexible framework to assess both short- and long-run business cycle linkages between six Latin American (LA) countries and the four largest economies in the world (namely the US, the Euro area, Japan and China) over the period 1980:I-2011:IV. The result indicate that within the LA region there are considerable differences between countries, success stories coexisting with extremely vulnerable economies. They also show that the LA region as a whole is largely dependent on external developments, especially in the years after the great recession of 2008 and 2009. The trade channel appears to be the most important source of business cycle comovement, whilst capital flows are found to have a limited role, especially in the very short run
Proof Complexity Lower Bounds from Algebraic Circuit Complexity
We give upper and lower bounds on the power of subsystems of the Ideal Proof System (IPS), the algebraic proof system recently proposed by Grochow and Pitassi (J. ACM, 2018), where the circuits comprising the proof come from various restricted algebraic circuit classes. This mimics an established research direction in the Boolean setting for subsystems of Extended Frege proofs, where proof-lines are circuits from restricted Boolean circuit classes. Except one, all of the subsystems considered in this paper can simulate the well-studied Nullstellensatz proof system, and prior to this work there were no known lower bounds when measuring proof size by the algebraic complexity of the polynomials (except with respect to degree, or to sparsity). We give two general methods of converting certain algebraic circuit lower bounds into proof complexity ones. However, we need to strengthen existing lower bounds to hold for either the functional model or for multiplicities (see below). Our techniques are reminiscent of existing methods for converting Boolean circuit lower bounds into related proof complexity results, such as feasible interpolation. We obtain the relevant types of lower bounds for a variety of classes (sparse polynomials, depth-3 powering formulas, read-once oblivious algebraic branching programs, and multilinear formulas), and infer the relevant proof complexity results. We complement our lower bounds by giving short refutations of the previously studied subset-sum axiom using IPS subsystems, allowing us to conclude strict separations between some of these subsystems. Our first method is a functional lower bound, a notion due to Grigoriev and Razborov (Appl. Algebra Eng. Commun. Comput., 2000), which says that not only does a polynomial f require large algebraic circuits, but that any polynomial g agreeing with f on the Boolean cube also requires large algebraic circuits. For our classes of interest, we develop functional lower bounds where g(x¯¯¯) equals 1/p(x¯¯¯) where p is a constant-degree polynomial, which in turn yield corresponding IPS lower bounds for proving that p is nonzero over the Boolean cube. In particular, we show superpolynomial lower bounds for refuting variants of the subset-sum axiom in various IPS subsystems. Our second method is to give lower bounds for multiples, that is, to give explicit polynomials whose all (nonzero) multiples require large algebraic circuit complexity. By extending known techniques, we are able to obtain such lower bounds for our classes of interest, which we then use to derive corresponding IPS lower bounds. Such lower bounds for multiples are of independent interest, as they have tight connections with the algebraic hardness versus randomness paradigm
Topologically controlled multiskyrmions in photonic gradient-index lenses
Skyrmions are topologically protected quasiparticles, originally studied in condensed-matter systems and recently in photonics, with great potential in high-density information storage. Despite the recent attention, most optical solutions require complex systems yet produce limited topologies. Here we demonstrate an extended family of quasiparticles beyond normal skyrmions that are controlled in compact photonic gradient-index media, extending to higher-order members such as multiskyrmions and multimerons, with increasingly complex topologies. We introduce multiple topological numbers (centrality, radiality, vorticity, and polarity) in addition to the skyrmion number to describe these photonic quasiparticles. Our compact creation system lends itself to integrated and programmable solutions of complex particle textures, with potential impacts on both photonic and condensed-matter systems for revolutionizing topological informatics and logic devices
