    A numerical model for predicting bubble formation in a 3D fluidized bed

    AbstractFluidized bed systems have the potential to be widely used in the power generation, mineral processing and chemical industries. One factor limiting their increased use is the lack of adequate design techniques for scaling such systems. A model has been developed for simulating gas–solid fluidized bed plant. The model uses a multiphase Eulerian–Eulerian technique to predict the transient behaviour of fluidized bed systems. The commercial CFD code CFX is used as the computational framework for solving the discretized equations. To overcome the problem of accurate geometrical representation experienced in previous models a body fitted grid system is employed. The model is used to predict isothermal flow in a three-dimensional bubbling fluidized bed. Predictions of the three-dimensional model show bubble formation with gas bubbles or voids preferentially moving along the centre of the bed. Predicted behaviour is qualitatively consistent with experimental observations

    Highly analysable, reusable, and realisable architectural designs with XCD

    Connector-Centric Design (XcD) is a new approach to specifying software architectures. XcD views complex connectors as highly significant in architectural designs, as it is the complex connectors that non-functional quality properties in systems can emanate from. So, XcD promotes in designs a clean separation of connectors (interaction behaviours) from components (functional behaviours). Designers can then specify connectors in detail explicitly thus easing the analysis of system designs for quality properties. Furthermore, XcD separates control behaviour from connectors as control strategies. Architectural designs in XcD thus become highly modular with re-usable components, connectors, and control strategies (representing design solutions for quality properties). The end result is the eased architectural experimentation with different design solutions by re-using components/connectors and formal analysis of these solutions to find out the optimal ones

    Palaeoproterozoic magnesite: lithological and isotopic evidence for playa/sabkha environments

    Magnesite forms a series of 1- to 15-m-thick beds within the approximate to2.0 Ga (Palaeoproterozoic) Tulomozerskaya Formation, NW Fennoscandian Shield, Russia. Drillcore material together with natural exposures reveal that the 680-m-thick formation is composed of a stromatolite-dolomite-'red bed' sequence formed in a complex combination of shallow-marine and non-marine, evaporitic environments. Dolomite-collapse breccia, stromatolitic and micritic dolostones and sparry allochemical dolostones are the principal rocks hosting the magnesite beds. All dolomite lithologies are marked by delta C-13 values from +7.1 parts per thousand to +11.6 parts per thousand (V-PDB) and delta O-18 ranging from 17.4 parts per thousand to 26.3 parts per thousand (V-SMOW). Magnesite occurs in different forms: finely laminated micritic; stromatolitic magnesite; and structureless micritic, crystalline and coarsely crystalline magnesite. All varieties exhibit anomalously high delta C-13 values ranging from +9.0 parts per thousand to +11.6 parts per thousand and delta O-18 values of 20.0-25.7 parts per thousand. Laminated and structureless micritic magnesite forms as a secondary phase replacing dolomite during early diagenesis, and replaced dolomite before the major phase of burial. Crystalline and coarsely crystalline magnesite replacing micritic magnesite formed late in the diagenetic/metamorphic history. Magnesite apparently precipitated from sea water-derived brine, diluted by meteoric fluids. Magnesitization was accomplished under evaporitic conditions (sabkha to playa lake environment) proposed to be similar to the Coorong or Lake Walyungup coastal playa magnesite. Magnesite and host dolostones formed in evaporative and partly restricted environments; consequently, extremely high delta C-13 values reflect a combined contribution from both global and local carbon reservoirs. A C- 13-rich global carbon reservoir (delta C-13 at around +5 parts per thousand) is related to the perturbation of the carbon cycle at 2.0 Ga, whereas the local enhancement in C-13 (up to +12 parts per thousand) is associated with evaporative and restricted environments with high bioproductivity

    Self-consistent solution of the Schwinger-Dyson equations for the nucleon and meson propagators

    The Schwinger-Dyson equations for the nucleon and meson propagators are solved self-consistently in an approximation that goes beyond the Hartree-Fock approximation. The traditional approach consists in solving the nucleon Schwinger-Dyson equation with bare meson propagators and bare meson-nucleon vertices; the corrections to the meson propagators are calculated using the bare nucleon propagator and bare nucleon-meson vertices. It is known that such an approximation scheme produces the appearance of ghost poles in the propagators. In this paper the coupled system of Schwinger-Dyson equations for the nucleon and the meson propagators are solved self-consistently including vertex corrections. The interplay of self-consistency and vertex corrections on the ghosts problem is investigated. It is found that the self-consistency does not affect significantly the spectral properties of the propagators.     Preclinical validation of a new hybrid molecule loaded in liposomes for melanoma management

    The aggressiveness of melanoma and lack of effective therapies incite the discovery of novel strategies. Recently, a new dual acting hybrid molecule (HM), combining a triazene and a ʟ-tyrosine analogue, was synthesized. HM was designed to specifically be activated by tyrosinase, the enzyme involved in melanin biosynthesis and overexpressed in melanoma. HM displayed remarkable superior antiproliferative activity towards various cancer cell lines compared with temozolomide (TMZ), a triazene drug in clinical use, that acts through DNA alkylation. In B16-F10 cells, HM induced a cell cycle arrest at phase G0/G1 with a 2.8-fold decrease in cell proliferation index. Also, compared to control cells, HM led to a concentration-dependent reduction in tyrosinase activity and increase in caspase 3/7 activity. To maximize the therapeutic performance of HM in vivo, its incorporation in long blood circulating liposomes, containing poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) at their surface, was performed for passively targeting tumour sites. HM liposomes (LIP HM) exhibited high stability in biological fluids. Preclinical studies demonstrated its safety for systemic administration and in a subcutaneous murine melanoma model, significantly reduced tumour progression. In a metastatic murine melanoma model, a superior antitumour effect was also observed for mice receiving LIP HM, with markedly reduction of lung metastases compared to positive control group (TMZ). Biodistribution studies using 111In-labelled LIP HM demonstrated its ability for passively targeting tumour sites, thus correlating with the high therapeutic effect observed in the two experimental murine melanoma models. Overall, our proposed nanotherapeutic strategy was validated as an effective and safe alternative against melanoma.</p

    Zika virus infection in 18 travellers returning from Surinam and the Dominican Republic, The Netherlands, November 2015–March 2016

    Purpose: We report 18 cases of confirmed Zika virus (ZIKV) infection in travellers returning to the Netherlands from Surinam (South America, bordering northern Brazil) and the Dominican Republic. Methods: In a multi-centre study, we collected epidemiological, virological and clinical characteristics, as well as data on travel history, underlying illness and laboratory results of the 18 imported ZIKV infection cases using a standardised form. Results: Most cases had a self-limiting course of disease, two patients developed complications, one had Guillain–Barré and another had severe thrombocytopenia. Four patients had underlying illness. One of the reported cases was pregnant. Three of 13 patients tested had a weak-positive result for dengue IgM. The majority of patients were born in Suriname and/or visiting friends and relatives (VFR). Conclusions: Providing pre-travel advice among travellers, especially VFR travellers, is needed to enhance the use of preventive measures against ZIKV infection. Further evidence on health risks associated with ZIKV infection is urgently needed

    Prevalence and risk factors for carriage of ESBL-producing Enterobacteriaceae in a population of Dutch travellers: A cross-sectional study

    Background: We investigated prevalence and predictive factors for ESBL-E carriage in a population of mostly travellers prior to their travel (n = 2216). In addition, we examined ESBL genotype before travel and compared these to returning travellers. Method: A questionnaire and faecal sample were collected before travel, and a second faecal sample was collected immediately after travel. Faecal samples were analysed for ESBL-E, with genotypic characterization by PCR and sequencing. Risk factors for ESBL-E carriage prior to travel were identified by logistic regression analyses. Results: Before travel, 136 participants (6.1%) were colonized with ESBL-E. Antibiotic use in the past three months (ORadjusted 2.57; 95% CI 1.59–4.16) and travel outside of Europe in the past year (1.92, 1.28–2.87) were risk factors for ESBL-E colonisation prior to travel. Travel outside of Europe carried the largest attributable risk (39.8%). Prior to travel 31.3% (40/128) of participants carried blaCTX-M 15 and 21.9% (28/128) blaCTX-M 14/18. In returning travellers 633 acquired ESBL-E of who 53.4% (338/633) acquired blaCTX-M 15 and 17.7% (112/633) blaCTX-M 14/18. Conclusion: In our population of Dutch travellers we found a pre-travel ESBL-E prevalence of 6.1%. Prior to travel, previous antibiotic use and travel outside of Europe were the strongest independent predictors
